Is Five Guys really that good?

10,159 June 10, 2010 at 05:17 PM in Grocery
A Five Guys burger joint just opened today in my area....the first in CA, I believe. I'm dying to go check it out. Maybe this weekend. Is all the hype justified?drool

Just have to watch out for people with nut allergies since they use peanut oil. Peanut oil gives the fries the amazing flavor.
Tasted like regular fries to me. Nothing special.

Bring me back a bacon double with mayo and mustard only. Large fries, salted. And a big-ass bag full of those extra salty peanuts. Hell, bring the soda fountain home, too!! Please

Yeah but even then laugh out loud I think they may have been from a batch that was overcooked or something. I'll try them again at some point.

Well I will just have to take a weekend trip and give this a try! I didn't see any Malt Vinegar there, nor did I know to look for it. I have never heard of Malt Vinegar on fries, but I like it on my fried fish! Sucks to be uneducated in the Five Guys way.....LOL!

I've now been to Five Guy's about 4 or 5 times since first going there this spring. I'm not sure it is worthy of all the hype that I had heard before ever getting to try it but it is definitely good. I will do some things differently on future visits. The biggest problem I have had is the bun not holding up. I don't think this would be a big problem if eating on site but I prefer to take my order to go and then eat it at the hotel where I can watch TV or be on the computer or whatever. By the time I get the food and drive back and get to my room the bun has soaked up a combination of grease from the burger and the liquids from other toppings.

The only way I can see to improve this situation is to limit the toppings and select items that won't be so soggy. The burger itself doesn't seem to be too greasy so hopefully by limiting the toppings the bun will hold up better. The fries seem to be fine after the trip but I do need to find a better way to transport the malt vinegar. Those little plastic cups are just a pain in the ass and tend to leak. I suppose I could just steal a whole bottle Evil but I hate to do that. I guess I will just have to buy some for when I travel or bring a small well-sealed container with me to fill up while I am there.

I haven't tried the cajun fries yet but I plan to in the future. Are they very hot (spicy hot)? And are the cajun fries also good with the malt vinegar?

Secret Ask them for a piece of tinfoil, then wrap them up in that. I go crazy and put them in the holder box thingy for the peanuts, wrap the cups in napkins and secure that with tinfoil over it..Whee I'm a master at it now..although I bought a bottle to make it easier now..laugh out loud

actually, refined peanut oil that's used in major corps don't have the protein that causes the allergic reaction. organic still contains it. granted there are some docs who say avoid it all together just for cautious reasons. there's been no link between nut allergies and peanut oil fried food.

Maybe something has changed in the last 10-20 years or so but one of the 4th graders in the district I drove for died on a field trip within a couple of minutes after eating a french fry coke in peanut oil at a wave pool.

Yes, bunny... cajun fries are spicy. Comfort But you can ask for light spice. Haven't tried those with vinegar. Would probably be OK, but I like the spice. drool
