True, but just imagine how kick ass it would be...
i'd imagine a higher death rate due to driving.

as is, people don't even know how to drive with speed limit, if there were none, people would be flying off the roads, literally, and dying every half second nod

i've driven pittsburgh to houston a couple times. about 1300 miles, in 21-22 hours.
next time i do this, i want to try it in one shot, no stopping to sleep one night.

worst time i did it was in a car with no music other than the radio, and with no ac during late august. i was just sitting there dripping sweat.

Wow crazy I was thinking of creating a thread with this very same question!

For me - just stopping for gas and potty breaks - I drove from CT to GA several years ago - 17 hours or so. Then my wife took over until FL where I resumed driving. We were driving from CT to my uncle's place in Sarasota.

I'm thinking about doing this in August. Just take off and drive with no particular destination in mind. I would be focusing more on enjoyment rather than distance though. Staying off of the freeways and interstates as much as possible and stick to the back roads and small towns. I can spare up to about 10 days to do this and have been giving it some thought.
i have nothing else in common with you, but i've been thinking of doing roughly the same. though i'll be using interstates and going through cities whenever possible. i may do this this fall, like in september, and visit the southwest and then drive up through the rockies to the pacific northwest.

Let's see...laugh out loud

Boston to Houston....2 times both with 2 people driving...first time was mostly me, massive tunnel vision by the time I got to "hell road", I-95 I think it was...long time ago. Second time was round trip, me and mom spilt the driving...hit a tornado in LA and had to pull off the road.

Boston to Ft.Lauderdale and back....2 times...2 people, again mostly me because he didn't have a license so I let him drive slow during the day and I made the time up at night.

Boston to South Carolina...once..straight all the way, I think we made it in 18 hours or so.

These were all a long time ago, I love traveling and seeing the scenery. I wish I could do it more today. It was fun. Those were my longest trips, but had many more then I listed.

My next trip I want to do is Boston to Sedona, AZ..heart

If the OP meant "one shot" as not stopping then I don't think the 20hr trips people are claiming are possible on one tank of gas. I drove from Boston to somewhere near Erie, PA in one shot without stopping taking my gas tank from Full to Empty in about 8 hrs. I filled up and did it again to get to Chicago in another 8 hrs for 16 hrs total with one stop.

The whole trip was a result of the fact that I had to fly from overseas to Boston instead of Chicago because it was too hot in Chicago for the airline to take my dog in the cargo area but that's another story . . .

Would work the night shift 4-1am and then head from Silicon Valley to Roseburg Oregon ~ 500 miles driving all night to visit relatives.

One time I was too damn tired...middle of summer like 70 degrees at 3 am...somewhere just south of Redding...pulled over at an off ramp...pulled the seat back and crashed, windows wide open, etc...

woke up ~ 2hrs later as dawn was setting in only to find that I had 1,000,000+ bugs and mosquito's in the hatch back! EEK! EEK!

That woke my stupid ass up!!! 0-95mph with the windows still down to try and clear those bastards out of the car!!!!

~~
I used to drive from San Jose to Sacramento daily for about 6 mos...I had this one exit that I'd pull over on the way up for a quick snooze...well one time I was totally out of it..was up too late the night before, etc...I backed into my little "spot" just off the freeway and crashed out...I was so tired I left the engine running, lights on, etc...doors locked, windows up. (wasn't warm enough to have them down)

I am startled awake by a tapping of a baton on my window!!!!
Sheriff had stopped to make sure I was ok...after I jumped back into my skin, he says...it's ok...good idea to keep resting if you are tired...after the shot of adrenaline I was WIDE awake and headed on in to work.

Chicago to Dallas, TX, about 1,000 miles.

Dallas to Jacksonville, FL also about 1,000 miles in a Ford Pinto Station Wagon, crammed full of boxes. That one was interesting because it was during the 1979 gas crisis and people were lined up for blocks in the city waiting their turn for gas. On the interstate, it wasn't as bad which was probably because so many people had canceled their summer road trips for fear of not being able to find gas.
