Maybe it's just me, but a decades ago it seems like construction delays were much rarer than they are today.

I drove around 2000 miles in about one shot (except for the stops for gas).

35 hours non-stop from Texas to Oregon (with exception to piss breaks and gas stops; no food or anything). Dropped dead after that and vowed I'd never drive that long ever again. Was by myself.

26 hours straight, from North Carolina to Nebraska, though I did stop once for a tornado in Kansas.

The tornado (F4) chased me up the Interstate and I was (embarrassingly) crying and praying, completely unwilling to get out and lie down in the ditch like any good, midwestern girl knows she should, with that monster barrelling down. I swore that if God would please just let me make it to the next exit, I would stop there.

I did make it to the next exit, where there was a convenience store that looked like a cinder block (very sturdy). I RAN inside for my life. No one was there - not even a clerk, so I yelled, "Is anyone here?!" From deep inside the store, a little voice said, "We're in the freezer!" So, I joined and that's where we rode out the tornado. It was completely devastating. When I got back into the car, I passed the stadium where the Chiefs (I joked that they were the Chefs, because the sign had been ruined) play. There were downed powerlines and trees just absolutely everywhere.

Now, I'm from Nebraska, so I've seen total tornado devastation, and I was in Grand Island the "Night of the Twisters" when 15 tornadoes hit in one night, but this was a monster of a tornado.

I specifically remember listening to the radio, because the weather was so black, and hearing the weatherman say, "There is an F4 tornado touching down in Lancaster County." And I thought, "Hmm...I wonder where Lancaster County is." And at that exact moment, I heard a ROAR and I looked to my right, and THERE IT WAS...I mean, I could have reached out and touched it. I'll never forget it. I've been close to a lot of tornadoes, but this one and I could have made a baby.

Cleveland to Omaha. Two cars and three drivers. I drove the entire time, but the other drivers took turns.

yeah.. F that. I'd never do 32 hours again, I can't imagine 35. I also refuse to drive through West Texas ever again.

I'm thinking about doing this in August. Just take off and drive with no particular destination in mind. I would be focusing more on enjoyment rather than distance though. Staying off of the freeways and interstates as much as possible and stick to the back roads and small towns. I can spare up to about 10 days to do this and have been giving it some thought.

That sounds really fun. Get a few roadmaps, hit up backroads, maybe come back with a story or two to tell.

Either that, or wind up the captive of an insane elderly couple somewhere in Ohio.
Well, I did end up doing this and my random journey is just about over. I've covered close to 2,000 miles over the last 8 days, wandering somewhat aimlessly around Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa and Missouri. I ended up on the major roads a little more than I planned but also spent a bunch of time on the back roads.

For the most part I avoided the bigger cities (Not that there are many in this particular region laugh out loud My favorite part was exploring the small towns and checking out the historical places of interest. I visited a huge number of antique stores along the way, buying a few little items but nothing of real interest or value.

One of the stores I went to was Antique Archaeology, the store from the show American Pickers on the History Channel. That was kind of neat but wasn't really anything special. There were a lot of items from the show, many of them just on display and not for sale. I got to meet Danielle from the show--she came out and visited with the customers and signed autographs and had pictures taken with some of them.

Mike and Frank weren't at the store at all but I did see Mike downtown at a restaurant.

Most of my trip probably wouldn't be of interest to write or read about but I have had a blast. Pretty much every other time I have traveled I had a destination and a route all planned out. This was definitely something new for me. Everybody I talked to on the way commented about how cool it would be to just take off and go like that. And it was.

In some ways I wish I had more time but then again I am about ready to get back home. Right now I am back in Wisconsin and am going to visit some friends before I head for home on Sunday.

I did eat at a lot of local places along the way. And I had no idea beforehand that a Carolina-style pulled pork sandwich had the cole-slaw served on the sandwich Doh

I thought it was just a side dish like it usually would be.

Thats funny because up here I always get the Carolina pulled pork, and never had the coleslaw on it...weird. I just like the flavor, it's sweeter in a way.

I have no idea if that is standard for a Carolina style but that is how they served it. It was at a Rib Crib I believe, which actually had pretty good BBQ for a chain type restaurant.
