then it switched to 17 hours from Des Moines to Raleigh, North Carolina because they moved. and i've done that on average three times a year for the last 4 years including just two months ago with two cats so the landlord could redo the kitchen and bathroom in my place while i was gone.

I have to pull a trailer home so it will be a little slower trip.
The tornado (F4) chased me up the Interstate and I was (embarrassingly) crying and praying, completely unwilling to get out and lie down in the ditch like any good, midwestern girl knows she should, with that monster barrelling down. I swore that if God would please just let me make it to the next exit, I would stop there.
I did make it to the next exit, where there was a convenience store that looked like a cinder block (very sturdy). I RAN inside for my life. No one was there - not even a clerk, so I yelled, "Is anyone here?!" From deep inside the store, a little voice said, "We're in the freezer!" So, I joined and that's where we rode out the tornado. It was completely devastating. When I got back into the car, I passed the stadium where the Chiefs (I joked that they were the Chefs, because the sign had been ruined) play. There were downed powerlines and trees just absolutely everywhere.
Now, I'm from Nebraska, so I've seen total tornado devastation, and I was in Grand Island the "Night of the Twisters" when 15 tornadoes hit in one night, but this was a monster of a tornado.
I specifically remember listening to the radio, because the weather was so black, and hearing the weatherman say, "There is an F4 tornado touching down in Lancaster County." And I thought, "Hmm...I wonder where Lancaster County is." And at that exact moment, I heard a ROAR and I looked to my right, and THERE IT WAS...I mean, I could have reached out and touched it. I'll never forget it. I've been close to a lot of tornadoes, but this one and I could have made a baby.
Longest was 27 hours driving, awake for 32. Again, I had a passenger, but I did all the driving.
from Lincoln Nebraska to Berkeley California
there was a 5 day snow storm about to hit everything from colorado, utah, nevada, and lake tahoe. by the time i got to reno nv it started snowing. i drove through from reno through lake tahoe to sacremento in the snow, carefully, but was able to make it through before being snowed in for a week
