Photography thread - for Schoob

10,796 659 July 8, 2010 at 11:18 AM
Schoob asked for people to post their photography in a thread.

I'm not a pro, but I take some good photos and I have a sincere passion for photography. Soon, I hope to learn more and take some great photos.

Since Schoob wants to see a thread about photography, here are some good ones that I took of Luray Caverns last weekend.

As you can imagine, it's tough to get good photos in a cave, but this is my favorite view of Dream Lake inside the caverns:

Here's the formation that I think looks like a little resting sherpa carrying his pack. Or, if you look at the back of the formation, it kind of looks like Vlad Dracul.

This is my favorite picture that I took of the Wishing Well:

Here's one of the ceiling of one of the caves:

And one of some contrasting stone:

Btw, what kind of post-processing was done here?
What's wrong with your D40? What are you missing out on?

Iagree

What kind of lens do you shoot with?

Maybe an upgrade on the lens will satisfy you more than a new body would?

Blush

I do okay, especially considering I don't own/use a dSLR.

this thread also reminded me I needed to pay for another year of storage at flickr, I use them as a back up and to have access to all of my photos, instead of the latest 200 only, worth the $25 to me.

randomly from one of my sets on flickr:

one of my all time favs:

the rest of my stuff:

I've been kind of a slacker lately, I have a bunch of things I need to upload.

What's wrong with the D40? A camera is only a tool to help you get the job done.... it doesn't work magic, and the D40 is a very capable camera.

And thanks. Processing? A lot laugh out loud
3 shot HDR, bumped contrast in 2 separate layers for the sky and the ground (and the sky still has blown highlights), bumped saturation and played with levels/curves. Straightened horizon and o yeah, one of the trees was red and "didn't fit in", so I made it green (not perfectly, it still has some red leaves on it) Whee

Though when it's saved on tinypic, it's compressed and looks a bit underexposed....

I know that the D40 is an excellent camera, and I really enjoy using it. I feel like the more expensive ones have much better clarity and color than my basic one, besides for more MP.

I currently use the kit lens (not so often), 35mm 1.8, and 55-200VR which I'm OK with for now.

I really love the effect that the HDR gives. I have to try it out once, but I usually forget to take the 3 pictures when shooting, so I'm going to have to go out on a shooting expedition specifically for that....

"Beginners worry about cost. Amateurs worry about equipment. Experts worry about lighting" I read that somewhere, I think it's very accurate.

Most of the "clarity" and "color" come from postprocessing or changing the settings/shooting modes in-camera (if you shoot jpeg).

Just my 2c.

Max, right now I have a f1.8 50mm for my portrait shots. Do you recommend anything better?

Also, just for standard nature shots in general, do you have any recommendations?

Nice flower photos!!

Very talented people in here. I'm 'trying' to save for a nice camera.
I really like (I think it's called color blocking?) anyway, the photo is in black and white with just one part in color. I'd love to learn how to do that.
