Agree with GG on the Arnica.Always have it in my medicine cabinet.
Bronc - Take care
Been working on DD's house. I think I am taking a trip this week to pick up her kitchen cabinets. It may take two trips to get them all home. I have a van with all the seats out and it has a luggage rack so I can haul quite a few at once. It's an hour each direction, so I'm hoping for one trip. The upside is that Target is right across the street so I'm going to scour the deals thread hoping for some good ones this week -- especially if I have to drive there twice.
MOT2, glad to see you post!!
i will pm you my phone numbers and email addy, if you have any questions or concerns at all during your stay, don't hesitate to call. i am usually up very late so you can even call past midnite.
i'm sure you have an action-packed schedule, but if you do have time to meet up, i can get discounted bus tix from my bff to come into the city and meet you. and if you have a few hours to spare, i can give you and your family a local tour of almost any section of manhattan you want.
Hope everyone had a great weekend! We had the privilege of getting the kids each a new pair of shoes.
So many freebies on cold meds at RA last week and this week. My medicine cabinet is gonna be overloaded.
have a little tussle over where the 2 giant packs of soap, 2 giant bottles of moisturizer, 4pk of liquid hand soap, twin pack of half gal hand soap refills, 3pk of toothpaste and 4pk of lysol bathroom cleaner should go. i take them upstairs to the hall closet outside the bathroom and put the approx 40 bars of soap w/ the other unopened 20pk, put the 2-24oz moisturizers behind the bottle already there, put the 2 soap refills behind the 2 older bottles and the opened gallon bottle, put the toothpaste w/ the other toothpaste, etc. sil goes in the laundry room and exclaims, *oh, i forgot about the 2 packs of toilet paper in here!* i go back downstairs w/ them and now have to rearrange everything. there is now way over 300 rolls of toilet paper in that closet alone. one a half warehouse packs is scott tissue which we all know lasts a really long time.
then i go to put away the 24oz bottle of salad dressing. open the kitchen pantry and pull out another 24oz bottle of the same dressing. sil says to put the new one in the basement closet pantry. i go down there and find another 24oz bottle of the same dressing that expired last month.
we go out to walmart and i come home and try to put away the 2 half gallons and 2 pints of ice cream and giant tub of coolwhip sil bought. i end up pulling everything out of the freezer and giving it a quick wipedown while sil says, *i didn't know i had [a box of] airheads*, *i didn't know i had all this stuff in there!* which included another half gallon of ice cream, another 3 pints of ice cream a gallon bag of ice pops and the box of airheads, whatever that is. i wasn't even supposed to reorganize that freezer. i was supposed to rearrange the freezer in the garage. go there and pull everything out. some of the stuff was stuck to the bottom. sil said she had a power outage. ok......scary..... at the very bottom i find 3+ lbs of bacon (i think it was 4-6lbs), this is in addition to the 6lbs she just bought. there is also a warehouse box of ice cream sandwiches barely opened and a warehouse box of ice cream cookie sandwiches.
some perspective on this story. there is only 4 people in sil's family. sil goes there maybe once or twice a month for the wknds. there were 10 people for the wknd. that's probably average b/c she is totally stressed out that there will be 23 people plus a baby for thanksgiving and black friday and then slightly less for that sat and sun. we spent the wknd planning the menu, shopping for it and figuring out the sleeping arrangements and driving arrangements.
so in actuality, she uses less groceries at this house overall in a month than a regular family of 4, just uses it up in bursts, rather than gradually over time. we ate one honeydew, one pineapple, one apple (we used a few pieces to bait the trap) and didn't even finish a bag of grapes. dh and i eat more fruit than that in one wk. we ate 3 heads of romaine, i took the other 2 home. but she buys literally enough supplies for the duggars. we both took home slightly expired food and chucked some stuff that was over a yr past the expired date.
every time i go there i spend the whole time rearranging the closets and pantries to fit in more stuff and check expiration dates. if i didn't, the situation would be way worse. as it is, there is absolutely no room in either freezer to fit any more stuff and sil is under strict orders not to buy anything that has to go in the freezer and if she does go one more time b4 thanksgiving to eat out of it. she has flank steak, short ribs, chicken, duck, pork, fish, shrimp, scallops, japanese eel, fake crabmeat, clams, ham, bacon and pork belly in the freezer. that just the uncooked meat. that does not include the heat and eat bbq honey chicken wings, another 2 bags of precooked chicken appetizers, roast chicken strips, 2 boxes corn dogs, margaritaville shrimp, popcorn shrimp, pastrami, cocktail franks, brown and serve sausage and more. and this is all warehouse club sized pkgs. and that's just the meat. and that's less than half the freezers.
the worst part is sil pays full price for everything and we end up throwing away so much stuff. we chucked a practically full warehouse size container of kraft parmesan cheese that was over a yr past the expiration date and a wedge of real parmesan cheese that had molded (it probably could have been rescued but i know sil wouldn't have gone for that and she bought a new one on sunday). the scary part is that we had gone thru the pantries to see what nonperishables we could buy now for thanksgiving so for that we are pretty much in control. but much of the duplicate stuff cleaning supplies and paper goods she bought that she already had more than enough of was in those same pantries.
Seriously 45 min?! Wowza yowza I wouldn't have thought of that but yeah I suppose that can get to be quite the heavy traffic. Seems like everybody's a Hawkeye fan over here on this side of the state
Hope you get your dd's cabinets OK and in one trip! I think you will be proud of my wall patching job

vent! was very aggravated at my sil this wknd. .....
And what exactly is "manhattan?"
Oh, and I can commiserate a little bit with you SIL story....I just went through a similar situation with my mom. Two. Grocery. Bags. FULL of long-expired food. Stuff WAY past it's date. She is a couponer too...but rather than keeping tabs on her stockpile I think she'd just not go down to her basement to see if she had stuff and just buy it instead and then all of this stuff accumulated and then it got to this point. Aye.

MOT2, glad to see you post!!
Sorry about the head trauma & stitches, just glad you didn't lose your eye.
Heal quickly bud! And listen to GG she knows her stuff!

So, do not ever ever ever mess with garage doors.
tell them you are looking for a homeopathic remedy by boiron. arnica 30c.
it's usually about 6 bucks for a bottle (it's a slim plastic tube). they have a special packaging set of 3 bottles for about 12 bucks. that's what i would recommend getting. each bottle has about 50 small pills (they're about the size of mustard seeds, maybe a tad bigger). you'll need a few bottles, so the 3-pack is worth it.
if you don't find it there, and want me to mail, just holler here, or by pm or email.
you can also order online from washington homeopathy (they ship nationwide), vitacost, or amazon (amazon's prices are much more expensive).
and oh, ICE darling. ice that shiner, and the forehead area above the stitches: you can just use a bag of frozen peas or corn. it will mold to your face more easily. put back in freezer when it starts to thaw. reuse in a bit. etc.
sending hugs and prayers for a speedy recovery.
my DS#2 asks for *small candy* quite often...

:om g: So sorry and glad it wasn't worse!
I SO almost asked you if there were any homeopathic remedies for pink eye this wknd. DD had the start of it Saturday and I was like UGH seriously on the wknd. when the Dr. isn't open and we'd have to go to urgent care just for eye drops ($35 copay) !!! Or miss school this week before we could get to her reg. dr. and she could get them started...and there's way too much going on this week for this

I checked the forecast... no snow or ice predicted --- at least at this end. You are clear for take off. Have fun. My mom was up to visit last week and left on Saturday. It took her 45 minutes to get from the airport exit to 80. Neither one of us even gave it a thought -- there was an Iowa game.
what is cooking in GT's household...we miss your cooking posts...
vent! was very aggravated at my sil this wknd. she went to bj's by herself on sunday morning. i insisted on helping her put the stuff away. this is how it went. she bought 2 boxes of 600ct plastic forks. had to move 3 boxes of 700ct plastic forks to rotate stock. (that's 3300 plastic forks, not counting the open box upstairs.) she bought 2 warehouse boxes of swiffer clothes (2 boxes of 32 inside). had to move the one and a half boxes of swiffer cloths to rotate stock. she bought 2- 4pks of lysol wipes canisters. had to put them under the 4pk of clorox canisters and behind the 2 giant costco canisters of wipes. btw- there are also multiple canisters in all three bathrooms. she had to pull out the 1 and half warehouse packs of toilet paper on the top shelf to put away the 2 she bought. there are one and a half bigger packs of toilet paper on the shelf underneath.
....
may be you could do a garage sale
And what exactly is "manhattan?"
http://en.wikipedia.or
manhattan is an island which is about 10 miles long by 2.5 miles wide where almost all the places you've heard of and pictures you seen are located. the hudson river named after henry hudson and where flight 549 landed in the water, is on the west side and divides new york city from new jersey. the holland and lincoln tunnels connect nj to manhattan. the east river is on the east side, between manhattan and long island. central park is pretty much smack in the middle. Fifth Ave is the dividing line between east and west sides. you will be staying at times sq which kinda midtown just south of central park and on the west side. more on all that later.

wall street is almost at the southern tip of manhattan and in pre-revolutionary times used to be a wall, hence wall street. canal street used to be a canal. it's in the middle of the financial district where most but not all the financial companies have offices or headquarters. it does not look as impressive as it sounds but is where the new york stock exchange is. it is pretty much surrounded by very tall buildings so there is not a lot of sunlight down there. you will be taking the #2 or 3 subway from times sq downtown to the wall street stop to get there. will take about a half hr. from there you can walk to the twin tower memorial, the south street seaport, the ferry to the statue of liberty but that's a little bit far so you'd probably get on the subway. probably the best time to check out the protest would be after you go to the statue of liberty or after you see the memorial.
http://en.wikipedia.or
the bronx is northeast of manhattan and attached to the mainland. the yankees, aka the bronx bombers, are there. also the bronx zoo which is part of the bronx botanical gardens. overall it has more lower income neighborhoods than the other 5 boroughs but all boroughs have both rich and poor neighborhoods. when people think of gangs and graffiti in nyc, they are imagining the bronx usually.
queens and brooklyn are east of manhattan, queens is where both airports are so i think you will be flying in there unless you are flying into newark which is on the other side of the hudson river in nj. depends on which airline you are flying. if you take a taxi from the airport, it is max 4 people to a taxi unless you get a minivan taxi and it is a flat fee, i think $40 but you should double check. make sure they do not turn on the meter to or from the airport!!! tip is 15%, luggage should be extra $1-2 tip per bag, any tolls for tunnels on the jersey side is extra, no tolls for LGA or JFK. tv shows like king of queens and all in the family are about blue collar families in queens. the mets baseball team and the US open are based in flushing meadow park where 2 world's fairs were held. queens is composed of many neighborhoods most of which have an ethnic flavor like irish, hispanic, asian, russian, indian, greek, jewish, etc and you would go there or neighborhoods in brooklyn to get authentic food, clothing, accessories and other products.
brooklyn is south of queens and where the cosby show was supposed to be. the brownstone architecture is typical of brooklyn. however the show was actually filmed in the silvercup studios in queens which is a converted bread factory. brooklyn and queens are the 2 westernmost counties of long island which is about 100 miles long extending into the atlantic ocean. at the easternmost end is montauk and the hamptons where the summerhouses of the rich and famous are like billy joel, p diddy/puff daddy/ whatever his name is now.
http://en.wikipedia.or
southwest of manhattan island is staten island, another island. it's actually closer to new jersey than new york and every once in awhile threatens to secede from nyc b/c they always feel shortchanged when it comes to government services and forgotten. it's more or less a bedroom community with a lot of italian influence. there are no skyscrapers in staten island, unlike brooklyn, queens and jersey city in nj. the statue of liberty and ellis island are on small islands in between manhattan and staten island, actually closer to nj but the statue has it's back to nj so ny claims it.
so nyc is has 2 major islands (a whole bunch of minor islands), a small chunk of another island and a chunk of the mainland, all connected by bridges and tunnels. most people live in the outer boroughs and work and sometimes play in manhattan. same goes for much of northern new jersey. they just cross over or under the water except for people in staten island who take the ferry if they work in manhattan. the subway connects manhattan, the bronx, queens and brooklyn. all subway lines except the G run to or thru manhattan to another borough. you can also take the bus, but that is for short hauls of 2-4 miles usually.
http://www.mta.info/nyct/maps/submap.htm
the subway in manhattan usually takes about half an hr or more to get anywhere and then you have to walk. a lot. wear comfortable shoes and/or sneakers. heels are not a good idea. usually women change their shoes when they get to work. you most likely will not gain weight in ny, no matter how much you eat. you may lose weight.
with 4 people it can be comparably priced to take a taxi for short distances and especially going crosstown. going uptown and downtown for more than 5 miles it's probably better to take the subway b/c you don't get stuck in traffic. it's very difficult to get a taxi when it's raining and around 4pm during shift change when they are all going home.
you may want to either bring refillable water bottles with you and a little dishwashing liquid or you can buy bottles of cold water at the ubiquitous duane reade drug store that is every few couple blocks for about a dollar. there are very few walgreens and cvs and sales are totally different. you can also buy water, cans or bottles of soda from almost every hot food vendor in manhattan. it's cold and safe to drink. water is usually a dollar for 16.9oz. if they say it's more you can always say *how about a dollar?* all the designer clothes, handbags and accessories sold on the street are counterfeit. in midtown manhattan, it's very common to buy breakfast, lunch and fruit from a street food vendor. it's much cheaper and bigger portions. they are all licensed, inspected regularly and are regulars. most people who work in manhattan have their favorite carts they like to patronize. there are also dunkin donuts, mcdonalds, burger king, wendys and starbucks everywhere. good to pop in for a drink or snack from the dollar menu or coffee. they do not like people just sitting down w/o buying anything but you can sit there for hours and use the restroom if you've bought something. the best place to use the restrooms is usually the big hotels in midtown when you are out and about. starbucks is also always good for pitstops.
ok gotta go get some housework done. feel free to ask any questions. ttyl.
and be sure to bring umbrellas just in case. your hotel may have some to borrow but may charge a hefty fee if you lose it.
So does the subway go under the water too
I had to put all these places on Google maps
No high heels here....don't even own a pair
Good idea on the water bottles, hadn't thought of that....planned on the umbrellas...although the forecast at this point is looking to be absolutely gorgeous
