Hi SilkyPuppy! Nice to see you stop by Smilie

Quote from slowtech :
hi nikayla! just the person i wanted to talk to!

we were invited to go to las vegas w/ dh's college friend's family, inc our soon to be 13yr old god-daughter and soon to be 9 yr old brother. we are flying in sat nite, going to a national park like bryce for a few days and then they have a time share from tues to tues in vegas.

was wondering if you could suggest any family oriented day trips out of vegas since a whole wk in vegas is probably way too much.

the mom likes national parks but they picked vegas hoping her mom who is an indoor person would go, but she decided not to.

so far i found Red Rock Canyon Nat'l Conservation Area on tripadvisor that has very good reviews. i haven't had time to do much research yet but was wondering if you had any recommendations from a more local perspective. you can't always trust guidebooks and online recommendations. we went to the seattle experience music project which had a AAA 4 diamond rating which is usually very reliable but not that time. we've also gone to garden of the gods in CO that was recommended by a friend and thought that should have better ratings.

also restaurant recommendations would be awesome but i know it's probably too far.
Bryce Canyon is amazingly beautiful, you can't go wrong there. There is such an overwhelming amount of beautiful places to stop that I would stop at the visitors center first so you can see maps of the whole place and decide as a group what you want to see in the amount of time you have set aside. Since we are usually with a fairly large group of 12 to 16 all ages from infant to 60 with our family we usually choose easy and short hikes. One we really enjoyed was a paved path to some close by falls, the visitor center pointed us in the right direction.

Zions National Park is about 2 to 2.5 hrs from Vegas IIRC and also simply amazing! One of our very favorite hikes there is 0.4 miles and paved it is Weeping rock trail and simply breathtaking. Pictures never do it justice but it is where a natural spring up top somewhere seeps through the sandstone and come out in shallow caveish type inset. The hanging gardens that feed of the dripping water is so beautiful! During the spring there is even flowers hanging off of it.

http://www.hikespeak.com/trails/w...hike-zion/

The best part is if you do decide to visit Zions this time of year you do not have to wait for the shuttle! You can take your own car right to the trailhead. The museums and visitor center are fab and the town of Springdale which is right at the entrace to the park is so much fun to explore and shop with all the little shops etc. And we have eaten at a lot of the little cafe and have not found one that we thought the food was bad.
(also we got married at CliffRose Lodge and Gardens which is near the entrance to the park, we got married outside right in the middle of the gardens and ours was only the second wedding there. They did not have the deer fences up and at dusk a whole heard of dear came to our reception and were eating out of the hands of our guests. I loved it and we could hear the water from the stream bubbling a few yards away the whole time, it was just such a beautiful setting in the garden surrounded by the massive red rock of the park in the distance.)

Also there is Grafton Ghost town just outside of Zions as well if your interested in seeing a real old west ghost town built by pioneers.

http://www.americansouthwest.net/..._town.html

Bewarned oldtime banjo music at this link but way better pics of Grafton:

http://www.ghosttowns.com/states/ut/grafton.html

In Vegas you all should see the Belagio Botanical Gardens, they are so beautiful and have the oldest olive trees in the entire world! I have never seen trees that are so cool!

I would say you should see the Hoover Dam as well. We went on the tour inside the dam and I can't really explain the feeling of being inside it, I have never felt anything like it.
Quote :
The power plant at Hoover Dam has the capacity to produce 1,344,800 of electricity kilowatts.
http://www.lasvegasgrandcanyontour.com/park.php

You can litteraly FEEL the electricity, the hum of it and the power of it all around you. I couldn't help but my hands on the cold cement walls and feel the vibrational hums of all the power and marvel at what I was inside of. Not to mention the drive is very pretty and so is Lake Mead.

One place I want to visit soon is the Grand Canyon Skywalk.

I like the pic of it here: (same link as above)

http://www.lasvegasgrandcanyontour.com/park.php

The Vegas visitors center has a lot of info for family friendly places to see. Our kids LOVE M&M world but buy M&Ms before you go, if you do. They have them in bulk in a display of huge tubes in every color in the rainbow but they are INSANE in price!!!!!!! DH told our girls to go ahead and get some and I was like EEK! BABE!!! Did you look at the price, he was all, "uh no how much can they be?" I ran over to stop them and they only had HALF of a bag full, about the same size as the huge bags at Target, less than 2 pounds more than 1 pound, $3.50 or so at Target. It was about $30.00 Faint There is a free 3D movie at the top of the M&M factory that the kids love.

When we go to Vegas we are always visiting friends and family so we don't eat out that much but when we do we usually eat at Cheesecake Factory or Sweet Tomatoes http://www.menuism.com/restaurant...son-132576 If you like salad bars then Sweet Tomatoes has the most fantastic one I have ever seen, huge variety.

As far as Red Rock, I don't think we have been there, if I have I think it was over 20 yrs ago. It looks really pretty tho and I'm sure it would be awesome. I searched some pics to see if it looked familiar.

tx nikayla! your recommendations sound wonderful! i know they will be a huge help in deciding what to do and where to go. i think the kids would be interested in the ghost town and i've never been either. just driven past one.

bff invited us over to watch the superbowl. she'd been planning to serve pizza for dinner. guess what i got in the mail on sat when i got home? bzzagent kit for dr oetker's ristorante pizza. decided this would be the perfect opportunity to be a good agent, esp since bff is a big consumer of frozen food. her dh picked up the q's when he got kicked out of the house w/ the 4yr old twin boys b/c the girls odyssey of the mind group came over to work on their project. and he told me he didn't like frozen pizza. EEK! i told him he should take a look and decide if he didn't think he would like them he could go to their favorite pizzeria in the next town over. his decision.

so the adults ended up having a tasting party. when bff pulled the boxes out of the fridge i was like, uh-oh, cuz the boxes seemed really small. me and dh have been eating digiorno w/ facebook q's and the 2 of us eat a whole one for lunch. we decided to cook one of each, spinach, vegetale, 4 cheese and mozzarella. i love mushroom but for some odd reason they don't carry it at any store in my area. we didn't get pepperoni b/c they don't eat pork. think i will save one q and wait for it to go on sale so we can try it and compare it to the pepperoni digiorno in my freezer which was recently ranked no. 1. bff also heated up honey bbq wings, buffalo wings and cheddar poppers. i wasn't fond of the coating on the tgif poppers. a little too thick for me.

i think bff's dh was pleasantly surprised. i liked the spinach the best, there was lots of spinach. the vegetable was ok, i actually got squirted by a tomato, i don't know why i didn't like it more. i actually liked the 4 cheese even though it had blue cheese which i don't like. i couldn't taste it but bff's dh did. the mozzarella was just regular old pizza compared to the others. we've been making lots of pizzas for lunch recently, either digiorno or w/ pitas or english muffins w/ either spaghetti sauce or grape tomatoes and mozzarella. my dh said they were ok, comparable to digiorno, but he does not love pizza like i do.

bff's dh had told me he wanted to talk to my dh about contests to win stuff so b4 dinner i explained about bzzagent and showed him my kits for ristorante pizza and dunkin donuts iced coffee and gave them q's for coffee. i think her dh signed up to be an agent immediately. Teehee he'd better have remembered to put me down as the referral!

too many commercials during superbowl!!! it felt like they broke for commercial every 5 minutes. really annoying. and during the game i'd gone to synonym.com and they wouldn't show me the answer until you answered the question about commercial breaks during the superbowl. i was just watching for the commercials and half-time. dh is a big sports fan and bff's dh is mildly interested. bff got really excited during the 4th qtr of the game, yelling and cheering after plays although she didn't really understand what was going on and my dh had to explain the strategy to her.

overall i think we had a good low-key time at home which was what bff had been looking for. and we were all home early. Wink

Nope, not Super Bowl fans here either. I need to do some housecleaning but I'm feeling pretty tired too but geez 4 hours of sleep L2B! Did get dinner made and some laundry done. I have a basket of socks to match up but that is my least favorite chore, it's even behind dishes.

I have this compulsive need to buy the matching mint green/ brown baby stuff that is part of the T clearance. I have the car seat and Saturday bought the swing/ bouncer seat. I bought a Chicco packnplay that was clearance instead of the Graco one and I'm fighting the urge to track down the green/brown Graco one, as well as the matching highchair. Never had matching baby gear for any of the kids, don't know why it's bothering me this time. lol The only gear left to get are a stroller and a front carrier because we gave the last one away. Front carrier, not the stroller. The stroller that could be used for an infant is one we bought when almost 10 yr old ds was 2, it's been through a lot. Time for a new one, and I want one that I can attach a baby carrier to.

I guess it is time to fess up. Stick Out Tongue Yes, we're having "yet another", as my family so nicely put it. Due in mid-July and stubborn baby won't let us get a peek to know if we're having another boy or another girl. Older kids are girl, girl (15 and almost 13) and boy, boy (9 and 4).

Today, I found a Chicco Cortina/ Key 30 travel system for 50% off so I'm going to take back the Graco infant seat. It's a nicer seat, from what I've heard from car seat techs (though the Graco is a very nice seat too), plus the matching stroller, and now I don't have the urge to track down matching baby gear. laugh out loud

Odd thing- the store I was at today had only this travel system and a Graco swing in the clearance stuff. Both were online returns so I asked an employee about any other infant clearance. She said that this particular store salvaged it all at 50%. EEK!

Was this on a cell phone? I started using a call blocker to automatically screen my calls. It's a free app called Mr. Number but I know there are lots of others. And thank you! Baby probably knows I'm really impatient and is trying to teach me some patience. Embarrassment

If it was a one time random text, I wouldn't worry about it. Ignore and you likely won't receive one again. They are trolling for people to reply so they can verify numbers are real. Frown

I agree with setsail. They're most likely dialing number sequentially just trolling to see who responds. This is also how telemarketers get unlisted numbers. They don't really "get" them; they just know the area codes and exchanges for cities and dial all the possible combinations.

Thanks for all the information gals, I didn't dial that number, however I did report them as my cell is on the Do not call list .
