Hey ST, for the cooking classes, do they cost $. Do you have to RSVP ahead of time at the store?

I thought maybe taking a class with my Mom and Sister. Like for mother/daughter bonding time.
the cooking technique classes are free. you do have to sign up in advance, just call. my store calls you to remind you a day or 2 b4 and to make sure you are coming or else somebody on the waiting list can get a chance. just like the dentist. starting this coming wknd for the next 4ish wks will be on sundays and mondays at my williams-sonoma about thanksgiving. they might already be full but they may have a waiting list. then i think they will be off for the holidays and then start up again in jan(?). i like them b/c you can ask questions ex how to make it vegetarian, gluten free, how to do it in the crockpot, etc. of course they demo their products but you can always ask them what to substitute from the supermarket. i learn alot. i grill my veggies and plate them exactly the way i saw in class. i actually thought i learned the least in the baking class last wknd. well, i did learn i thought the pumpkin cake pops were cute but totally unsatisfying. i would have eaten 6 of them if i could. i have been learning that puff pastry is really easy and versatile. the instructor said she uses it to make chicken pot pie top. i would love to try that. multiple people in class recommended pepperidge farm.

the cookbook club is expensive but you get the signed cookbook w/ that.

then they have regular cooking classes that i think are a bit on the expensive side but the class is small, everyone gets to sit around the cooktop and can try their hand if they want to. i haven't attended one of those yet. the technique class is usually about 20+ people and if you don't get there early to grab a stool you have to stand for 1hr -1hr 20 min.

i'm totally satisfied w/ the free techniques class. i see newlywed couples come, sisters, mother and daughter, grandmother + mother + grandson attend classes, etc. there are regulars who come and start shopping b4 the class is even over. they have lots of promos going on and of course they announce them and sometimes demo them during class. you also get 10% off that day off of most stuff in the store. i use it to shop the clearance after the class. it makes the clearance gourmet foodstuffs very reasonable.

also for the knife technique class you got to have one knife sharpened free during the class instead of the 10% off that day. they do that one 2x/yr.

after class, i always see the instructor helping people shop the store for stuff if they had questions during class. (of course it's usually cheaper on amazon!)

if you go often, the salespeople get to know you by name. you can think of it as personal service or a bit spooky!

this month you can also sign up for a free half hour thanksgiving menu consultation where one of the *experts* will help you w/ any aspect of your menu.

if you have a whole foods, they have cooking classes too that are a bit cheaper. but of course they are *healthier*. if your store offers value tours, i recommend them. my store gives you a reusable shopping bag, a bag of pasta, a jar of tomato sauce and a bottle of salad dressing free after the tour. you can do it 3x/yr. it does take some of the *whole paycheck* vibe off of shopping there.

I'm so annoyed!!! I was at a Target last night (not my regular one) and found the Dove Men+ Care soap and BW on clearance for $3.48. Minus the $2 MFR and the $1 TQ (that beeped but they put it through anyway since it didn't specify men's or women's on it) it was only 48¢ a bottle. I went to my regular Target tonight to get more and it was $4.24 there...and I forgot my TQ! Boo Hiss!!!!

So, I got one of the tangerine KA mixers from target a few weeks ago. I have used it twice and tonight it started making a horrible grinding noise.. I know I could take it back to target, but they won't have another one to replace it with.. So disappointed..
Read online and others have mentioned a similar problem when some part in the motor starts wearing.. But, the thing is brand new!

Call Kitchenaid first before you return it and see what they will do.

My store has about nada on clearance. Nothing on ends or reg aisles.

Looked at my store to do the Crest Deal the 5.8 oz is 4.07 at my store on sale, going to go back to the other store that has it cheaper.

So I had my last yard sale of the year, and possibly ever. Put an ad on craigslist that everything was $1. Terrible turnout, but I got rid of a whole bunch of stuff. The rest goes to goodwill and the homeless shelter.

Such a relief to be done with it! I have done yard sales consistently for at least 4 years, usually having at least 10 in a summer, and a couple more sprinkled through spring and fall. Plus tables at various church sales and flea market off and on. The payoff is great, but a tremendous amount of work goes into it, and I am so thankful to be done with that.

My first week of work went great, except that on Friday, I was actually the teacher in charge as the head teacher had to be with her daughter in the hospital. Faint I had barely learned all 19 names of the kids, and was still not clear of her daily routine in the classroom. But I somehow got through it, then came home and promptly crashed on the bed for a nap.

Hope everyone's having a great weekend! We're gearing up for a crazy storm. Worse, supposedly, even than the derecho we got this summer, and the damage from that took weeks to clean up (power back up, etc.). Hoping it shifts a little (or a lot!) and we don't get anything quite that bad.

But for anyone who's in the path of the storm, stay safe!!

Schools all in our area are closed for today and tomorrow. Gvt is closed. Both VA and MD governors are asking everyone to stay home unless they absolutely need to get out.

I have containers of water in my freezer, 18 eggs boiled, laundry almost all washed, dishes washed, stocked on lots of non-perishables, so we are ready. Pretty crazy. They are saying the latest computer models show it stalling out right over MD, which is definitely not good. Current forecast is saying winds sustained up to 60+MPH, for 12-16 hrs. Faint Unbelievable.

same here except no boiled eggs. do you just leave them out? or take them out of the frig when the power goes out? if the power goes, the frig and freezer are not to be opened until the power goes back on.

i have lots and lots of tuna but next time i need to pick up those little mayo packs and relish packs when we eat fast food.

I keep them in the fridge, and they can last for a while. For me, the idea is they are a great source of protein and would be the first meal we ate if/when we lost power. What I just googled, they should be eaten within a couple hours of losing refrigeration. What they were just saying on TV is that your fridge food will be bad after 4 hrs of no power, which is a very small window, so whether you open the door or not, its gonna spoil if you don't eat it, and eat it quickly.

I don't have an abundance of tuna, unfortunately. I have some, just not a bunch. Oh well. Smilie
