Has anyone dealt with Staples rewards Theft??

205 28 July 17, 2010 at 01:02 PM in Question
Ok, so I have been turning in ink cartridges to staples for a while now, and have received rewards since February I believe, and I have never been able to use them except one. I usually waited til the last day before they expired and then they wouldnt work when using them online or in store they wouldnt work, so i just figured i missed my chance, and would try again next month (i know, not the smartest approach, but thats a different issue).

Anyway, since I kept having non-stop problems with my rewards, I just logged onto my account to check my status on rewards.. Well apparently, EVERY single one of my rewards was redeemed in New York by somebody buying external hard drives both times. One was in Staten Island and the other in Selden... The problem here is that I am from Indiana, and have never been to New York in my life.. Now I dont know if 'New York' shows up if you buy online, or if someone guessed my rewards account number, because I keep my computer clean and scan it constantly for everything, and have never posted any information anywhere.. I cant call the rewards people til Monday to figure this out.. Do you think they will credit me with any of these rewards, or am I screwed?

So has anyone else had this happen, or did i win the unlucky lottery again? lol

Wow! Mine was in Danvers, MA, and then Manchester, NH, but the $98.50 portion was indeed used on a Nook color. What is going on here?
What's going on is the rewards check numbers are easy to generate. Guess the rewards number, and then it's a standard code and a check digit. Staples coupon and reward system has been cracked for a long time, and they really need to fix it.

And yeah, mine was actually Danvers, not Danbury.

Right, but they'd have to know somehow which Reward numbers did the full 20 ink recycle at $5 each promotion. That's why I'm starting to think this is an inside job.

Think about it, it makes sense. He quickly cracks the code and uses it on a small purchase in Massachusetts, not far from Framingham, where Staples HQ is.. The next day, he drives to New Hampshire (where there is no sales tax) and buys the Nook with the balance coupon. It seems more and more like this is a professional operation, not a single buyer buying a code off eBay from an unscrupulous seller.

They guess, and that's why they buy the cheap item first. It's absolutely not codes bought off eBay, though I have no doubt those are all not legitimate sales, either.

Right, but they'd have to print out something with the code. No cashier will just accept the Rewards coupon by reading them a number. Although I guess they could just try them online first.

My guess is that there's a seller on eBay with a bunch of new Nook colors. He's probably the thief Smilie

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if it was an employee (or someone working with an employee) at the Danvers store.

Yup. I also bet that the balance $147ish, was paid with cash in New Hampshire, as not to leave a trail.

If you knew the code it wouldn't be that difficult to generate a "rewards check" that would look just like the real one I print myself.

Hey guys, I talked to someone @ Staples and apparently they have their fraud department go after cases of theft over $100. If they order online with a CC, they can legally do a chargeback on their CC.

Does sound like an inside job. Maybe someone from the Rewards call center. Is that in MA I wonder...?

Being Staples Premier is nice. Emailed them last night when I posted here, got an email today saying they'll send me a new one, and if it happens again they'll change my rewards number.

I expect it would have been the same result for a non-Premier member, but taken a few days to get a response.

I am not sure I understand how buying from those scammers would make you a victim of Rewards theft too? Confused

How did I miss the 20 ink, it's always been 10/month? The promo for $5 includes buying HP ink from them, is this the same promo? Please advise, only have a few days until the month is over, thanks!

20 a month for those with premier status. Else 10/month.

What would that have to do with anything?
