Has anyone dealt with Staples rewards Theft??

205 28 July 17, 2010 at 12:02 PM in Question
Ok, so I have been turning in ink cartridges to staples for a while now, and have received rewards since February I believe, and I have never been able to use them except one. I usually waited til the last day before they expired and then they wouldnt work when using them online or in store they wouldnt work, so i just figured i missed my chance, and would try again next month (i know, not the smartest approach, but thats a different issue).

Anyway, since I kept having non-stop problems with my rewards, I just logged onto my account to check my status on rewards.. Well apparently, EVERY single one of my rewards was redeemed in New York by somebody buying external hard drives both times. One was in Staten Island and the other in Selden... The problem here is that I am from Indiana, and have never been to New York in my life.. Now I dont know if 'New York' shows up if you buy online, or if someone guessed my rewards account number, because I keep my computer clean and scan it constantly for everything, and have never posted any information anywhere.. I cant call the rewards people til Monday to figure this out.. Do you think they will credit me with any of these rewards, or am I screwed?

So has anyone else had this happen, or did i win the unlucky lottery again? lol

I obviously have no definite proof and would not risk slander. However, there is a definite pattern of behavior which involves several coincidences, some of which I have pointed out. Ultimately, everyone can make up their mind, but I chose to mention it here to shed some light into what is going on.
Thanks.

I love the wording on the stolen rewards checks (oh, sorry I meat to say "recycle coupons").

4. Why do I have to use rewards within 24 hours?

Answer: You should only purchase rewards when you plan to plance an order within 24 hours. This helps prevent rewards from getting redeemed by somebody else before you do. You can order in large numbers and ask me to send the rewards out the rewards when you are ready to order. This 24 hours rule ensures that the rewards are still working so you won't have any problems when you try to use it, especially if you are going to use it in-stores.
What s/he means by "somebody else" is the rightful owner of the rewards Mad

Went to Staples yesterday and I handed them my $40 rewards check. Apparently someone in Beverly, MA used it a week ago (I've never been there, I live about an hour away). This is the first time I've had my rewards stolen Frown I guess I'll have to use them immediately from now on.

Interesting... Initially, almost all stolen rewards were used in NJ. Now, we are hearing more and more about stolen rewards being used closer to the address of the rightful owner.

That would lead me to suspect that it could potentially be an inside job by a Staples employee.

FYI. Ink recycling rewards for ink recycled during April 2012 have posted today.

Go and use them before someone steals them.

Use them for a 10 cent copy and save the balance coupon if you don't need to buy anything at the moment.
Can the balance coupon can be stolen as well? Can it be used online? TIA.

Balance coupons can be used online. To date there have been no reports of balance coupons having been stolen that I am aware of.

May be the seller is intelligent now and gives people who buys the reward checks of those who live nearby.

Also, I don't understand how the seller knows the "name and address" on the reward checks. I mean finding out 16 digit code is one thing, but finding the name and address is another.

Sigh. Had rewards stolen last year. Got a new rewards number. Stolen again this time. I really want to save up my ink rewards so I can buy something bigger with them. Guess I gotta start buying something for a quarter as soon as I get them. Staples really needs to fix their system. How hard is it to generate a unique/random number that doesn't include the rewards number? They look them up in a database to see what's left on them anyway!

Yes but why talk about it so that the hackers know?

Finally!

Hmm.....now I wonder if we can combine checks from different rewards accounts for the same order without risk of having the accounts merged?

They MAY be tied to your rewards account. I would assume their system is smart enough to store rewards codes under your account. So, personally I wouldn't risk it.
