A youtube video for your viewing pleasure. It has nothing at all to do with Target.
Don't let your kids watch it. (nothing bad- just a couple of naughty words).

There are some that would suggest that ADHD is very close to the spectrum, and there are a number of children on the spectrum that have a co-morbid ADD/ADHD diagnosis. My 11 yr old daughter is one of them. She has Asperger's and ADHD. My 8 yr old son's diagnosis is high functioning autism. The school district thought it was "just" ADHD. He has had and continues to have some issues with low muscle tone, especially the fine muscles needed for writing (as an example).
And that is so completely not true that people with autism don't want friends. Saying that is like saying autism is caused by mothers that don't love their children enough/ show them enough affection (ie the old "refrigerator mother" belief). There is more I could write but it will just continue to piss me off that a specialist fed you this bull.
Do you think that one can just contact an OT or a speech doctor (there is prob a name for those) and work with them individually through appointments just as one would see a doctor if one were sick? Just asking your thoughts here -
And interesting about the friend thing - she was adamant that autistic kids are not interested in having friends and that was really her argument that my lil guy didn't have autism. (because he wants friends) I assumed that she was correct as I don't know a huge amount about this - she said that kids with autism are so isolated that they don't care what others think ... although I would have thought that depended on the person??? Also, we discussed that he never plays make-believe everything is factual ---- I make joke that he is Actual-Factual Man --- as well as LITERAL-GUY! (you have to be careful sometimes he is so so so literal) but she said to me that since he was able to take the men on the castle and have them battle the other men that he had plenty of imagination. I explained that if she watched him that he was not inventing make-believe play he was replicating ... repeating ... for example he doesn't come up with imaginary games/make-believe on his own ---- he will repeat what he has seen or heard in a book/movie and there can be no variation or he has no idea what to do. But she said that isn't what they meant on the checklist about not playing make-believe --- Can you give me any insight on that?
1 - Removed plastics containing bpa. No cups, no plates, nothing.
2 - We think ds has a sensitivity to salicylate foods. Lots of info here [salicylatesensitivity.com].
3 - Experimented with several Omega-3 supplements, and finally settled on Nordic Naturals. DS takes the lemon-flavored liquid mixed in a medicine cup with apple juice. We really see a difference in him when he skips it for too many days.
I think it is bizarre that they will work with disabled/non-functioning individuals, but the ones with some real hope for actual survival and integration into society are just left to flounder. Why don't they want their quality of life and functioning improved??? *THAT* makes no sense to me.
That was nice to hear - especially since I basically feel like a beach ball with legs lately!
I think it is bizarre as well - but I guess that is how the $$ are allocated. I never said I didn't live in a strange place!!! Anyway - I will figure out what best helps him and in the end it will all be ok
My stupid throat/tongue/neck/glands are still sore today - I may break down and go and see a doc just to get a throat culture to rule out strep this is ridiculous! Miss M has her pre-op appointment today so have to head to a doc's office anyway ... oooh what fun!
Dia - I have a DD (my oldest) with the same diagnosis although she is very very mildly involved. She is SUPER smart but her social skills are pathetic.
My DH thinks the same thing
I hope your shelf clearer moves on and stops! And thank you - I will PM you later!
PDD, Autism and Aspergers can all be entertwined. In some cases, PDD is Autism. PDD NOS, is not Autism, but it sounds like she didn't tell you WHAT he has. You can call her office and specifically ask what diagnosis code they are billing to your insurance. Then you can pm it to me, and I'll tell you what diagnosis she is using, if she can't tell you clearly herself. When she goes to bill your insurance, she'll have to put something down, and my guess will be PDD, NOS (pervasive developmental disorder, not otherwise specified) Basically she is just saying he has something along the lines of Autism but she can't figure out exactly what it is so she's going to throw it into a 'catch-all' diagnosis.
For Pete's sake, I know it can be hard to determine the correct diagnosis sometimes with those disorders, but if she isn't certain, she should do further testing
With pretend play, he has slightly improved in the last year or so. Used to be playing with his cars and trains meant lining them up end-to-end, in a neat and orderly manner, sometimes color-coordinated, sometimes not. Once he started to understand and comprehend the Thomas movies that he watched, then he would recreate scenes from those movies.
Bottom line for me is we as mommies know our little ones better than anyone, and have been gifted with an instinct. If you can't get the answers you want from the professionals, then become your own advocate. Read all the books you can, from both sides of the issue. DealHog said she knew of some online forums/support groups, so check those out.
I think sometimes we get caught up in wanting to "fix" what's wrong with our kids, when in reality, that's who they are. That's what makes them special. Yes, we need to give them the tools to function in our society, but at the same time, they are still our little ones who just need our love and support.
On a different note, I had arranged for my sister to watch my kids for a couple hours this morning so I could go shopping. And guess what?!? Forgot my stinkin' coupons.

Well she said that there were 3 diagnosis where he might fit - one is Autism another is Aspberger's and another is PPD-NOS ... she in part felt he fell into the PPD-NOS and he fit criteria for Autism except he wants to make friends and that seemed to be the thing that ruled Autism out and then she said Aspberger's except his speech was so delayed that she wasn't sure that fit ... she said that he did not fit neatly into any box and had elements of all of them - but she didn't want to say that he was in the Autism Spectrum??? Anyway - the conclusion she reached was the Asp. with the anxiety & ocd. I can try to get a second opinion ... that will only take another 6 months! LOL I was thinking of calling up an OT doc and a speech doc (what is their name ... can't think of it) to see if I can just schedule some appointments for him to work with someone??? Thanks for the tip on the neuropsychologist I will look into that as well. Is that someone I can call and make an appointment to see?
What type of doctor did you see yesterday? My kids see a developmental pediatrician. She specializes in autism and Down's Syndrome, though our first appointment with her was luck of the draw actually.
I completely understand on the make believe play. My son recreates movies but can't add dialogue on his own. It has the to be the exact way it was in the movie, or the Lego set has to be exactly like it shows on the box. I had the same issue with our school district about the imaginative play. In my son's school eval, they wrote that he could use imaginative play AFTER modeling. As you wrote, then it isn't imaginative play- they are telling him what to play. When left on his own, he recreated a Star Wars battle.
It isn't a lack of friends (or not wanting to have friends) that defines the spectrum. It's deficiencies in social awareness. There is a huge difference. My son wants to play with other kids but doesn't know how. He stands too close, wants everything to be exactly his way, etc.
Has the school district already evaluated him? You can take the results you have in and request an eval. They may be able to offer him services through the school district IF they find that he meets their criteria. Again, it's an iffy situation. Some places will take the diagnosis and use that for IEP eligibility, some places will say they can do what they want (our school district is the, we can do what we want kind). Same goes for what services can be received once the child isn't in school. I know people that have children receiving services such as speech while not attending public school but it varies by the state and what the state determines each school district must provide to children that aren't enrolled in public schools. For example, in Virginia, school districts don't have to allow homeschooled kids to participate in sports, band, gifted programs. The only services my son was receiving was 10 minutes a week of OT, I wasn't going to bother with that as a homeschool parent. According to his doctor, he should be in speech but the school district doesn't feel he needs it. Our insurance doesn't cover it because autism related services are only covered for active duty military dependents.
eta I'm also with Teri in regards to the doctor referring your son to someone that can provide a better (for lack of a better phrase) diagnosis.
flugette, it's not about changing who the kids are, or "fixing" them. It's about knowing how to help them adapt so they can function in society. Sometimes it takes having a diagnosis so that we know where to start. Around here, we call it "they don't do that in Holland". Every time we get a little frustrated with lack of progress, or trying to help my son understand for the 15th time this week why I won't buy yet another Lego set or Nerf gun, it helps diffuse the situation. It reminds us that we need to find a way to help him relate to the situation. Once he has the key to understanding, he has it. Just have to find the right way to describe something so that he can understand. And that is most often the hardest part, finding that key.
And while I'm on the subject, 4BB, how is your son doing??
Sorry you are experiencing this uncertainty and that the doc is being so elusive. I agree with Teri, if they're not sure exactly what it is because he displays symptoms of different diagnoses, then do more damn testing! Un.be.leave.able.

He says, "uhhh... HAWTTTT... Are you trying to hurt your case, cuz that's not helping..."
I have to laugh because I'm pretty sure it's so not "hawt" for most folks to see me walking around in my ooollldddd funky teal pregnancy bathing suit that's getting too tight on me (which is another thing DH said didn't help my case any when I explained... lol.) He's too cute.

Hey if she is born on a Friday - Friday's child is loving and giving
I think it is bizarre as well - but I guess that is how the $$ are allocated. I never said I didn't live in a strange place!!! Anyway - I will figure out what best helps him and in the end it will all be ok : )

I bet you look adorale too
Maybe she'll come on an earlier friday... lol. I wouldn't mind too much.
Oh, and DH's cousin is sending us a camera!!
All the talking about Autism, etc... makes me really wonder. Has this always been around and just not recognized/diagnosed. I am not even sure I can think of more than *maybe* 1 kid I ever knew growing up who might fit some of the descriptions. Did parents just keep kids home who may have exhibited these symptoms? It seems to be so widely prevalent today, and it's kind of scary - ya know? Especially since they don't seem to know what causes it.
DD is toooo adorable today!!! I was teasing her and saying "Oh no, what am I going to do with 3 stinky poo baby girls??? I'll have a Bekka stinky poo baby girl, an Eleanore stinky poo baby girl, and a Mavis stinky poo baby girl!!"
She stands up, puts her hand to her chest, lifts her chin and flutters her eyes and says in a "mannered' voice: "I not stinky. I clean..."
Has me
I have no idea where she must've gotten that little gesture. ha ha ha
She's now sitting in my lap and I think she's falling asleep. I'm kind of afraid to move and check yet. *laugh*
I'm a little tired, but otherwise feel good today. I am considering staying home from church though... get more rest, some quiet time, and maybe organize for shopping tomorrow. Dunno...

And ank, I think the majority of cases diagnosed that are "high-functioning" are kids that we just might have considered as odd, or weird, or slow-developing. My brother had signs of this when he was young, but you would never know it today. Well, I guess he does still have his oddities, but don't we all?
