Landers may need a new car

18,933 670 October 3, 2010 at 01:53 PM in Autos
I really didn't want to purchase a new vehicle, but the fact that my car may cost me about 1/2 or more than the value of it to repair and I own it outright, I may end up j ust buying a new one.

I'm looking used, but not opposed to new if the price is only a little bit more than what it would cost for used.

I'm looking to try to stay in 7-10k range, but could go a little more if the car was newer and the cost was only a couple thousand more and I could keep my monthly payments reasonable.

I'm looking at maybe Mazda 3 or similar. I'd like a Sedan, but am open to a small SUV. I don't want a coupe since i carry my hockey gear with me a lot and transporting that in a smaller coupe is inconvenient.

Any suggestions on vehicles to look at?

Meh. I don't need anything more than a small sedan or a small SUV. And I don't need all wheel drive. Something similar to a Mazda 3 sedan would really be perfect.
Why not a Mazda 6 then?

I don't have the proper words to express my disdain for the boxy cars like the Soul, Scions, and Honda Element. laugh out loud
the soul is not nearly as hideous as the nissan cube or scion Xb. just thought it might be a good fit for packing a bunch of stuff in it. the element is kind of the same way, looks fugly, but it is super roomy on the inside, after riding in one I could see why people would buy one

welp, that's all the advice I could give in this thread, I'm four years into my corolla ownership, and I don't think I'd do it again, but that's not that helpful to anyone, and even as much as it hasn't been good to me, I still have no plans to replace it anytime soon, other than tires, everything else has been covered or been freak occurrences.

Bye thread laugh out loud

Maybe you could start with Kelly Blue Book (kbb.com) to check several vehicles and their used car price based on miles and condition. That could give you a focused approach to decide which are too expensive for your budget and maybe open you to more cars to consider once you know the starting point.

For instance there is a Hyundai called the Elantra Touring that is kind of a cross-over SUV sedan. Lots of room and they look good for a cross-over. New they go for ~16K for a 2011. You may be able to find a used one that is in your bracket.

They aren't bad, but something about the stubby nature of them I don't care for too much. Definitely one to consider though.

I don't particularly like them because, to me, they look like shrunken down Nissan minivans.

Thanks for the helpful post though. I've been poking through KBB already.
