4,199 164 October 22, 2010 at 07:16 AM in Chat
Other thread about how did you meet and how did they propose made me think of this since I saw a varying of lengths that people were together before the ? came...

What are peoples opinions?

Edit: Thanks brisar for updating the spelling

Why does marriage matter? If you love somebody and want to spend the rest of your life with them then how does getting married make that any different? My SO and I both feel that we could spend the rest of our lives together and never get married, the real reason either of us would definitely want to get married is if we were ready to start a family.

Another question, how can you put a time limit on something like that? I see too many instances of marriage then divorce then remarriage then divorce that I don't see the harm in staying together for a long time prior to marriage, we dont love each other any less because we arent married. And whats funny is we actually have the strongest relationship of any of our married or non-married friends.
That's how I am, I don't really care about a wedding or anything. If I wanna be with someone for the rest of my life then I will be, doesn't matter if there's a ring on my finger or not....

I think in most cases you need at least a year to get to know someone well enough to know if they are marriage material or not. You learn about all of the good things long before then but it is the negatives that take a little longer to appear.

As far as a time limit--I say any time an ultimatum comes up where something has to happen by a certain date or "this is your last chance" or something like that it is time to cut and run because it is a no win situation. Either pull the plug right then or stick around and call their bluff and see how long it takes them to snap.

If you wanted to scare those 2 B's would you say "boo! b's!" perhaps?

Anyway I don't want to live in a world where everything isn't about boobies. Nono2

Ya.. got my ex preggo @ 3 months in, and we pretty much knew we didn't want to be married. 2 and a half years later after trying, she decided to move on. Would have been nice if she told me first though.

What I really want to know is why the OP took the time to type out every word except ?

Or is he asking about popping a question mark perhaps? Does Mark know?

Paging Zmarko. Paging Zmarko.

You would have thought talk of boobies would already have him in here.

And you're how old? Most guys I date who are between 35 and 45 are telling me that they are ready to get married if they were to meet the right woman. When I was younger (and dated younger guys) this was definitely not the case. Also I think as you near 40 you are either looking for marriage or have decided that marriage is not for you. Remember people in this range have approxiamately 20 year of dating under their belts in most cases.
My parents only got married because they wanted to have kids (and I think it makes taxes easier), my mom was 32 and my dad was 35, they had been dating for 4 years, living together...um I think 2 and wanted kids so they got married...otherwise they wouldn't have gotten married and just been with each other forever. There was no proposal, no engagement ring, they got married and had a family and they're still together 24 years later and I think they still would be even if they hadn't have gotten married. They want to be with each other...a signed piece of paper isn't what is keeping them together.
