AMC's The Walking Dead [Spoilers!]

Did you watch?

For a show on a non premium cable channel, I thought it was very good. I never read the comic, so I don't know how it compares, but I'll be watching every Sunday. pisses me off that I don't get AMC in HD though.

i thought this was a serviceable, if not notable, episode. things i remember:
  • Daryl siding with someone other than Rick in a major decision. when they're deciding whether to assault the hospital or take hostages, Daryl openly agrees with Tyreese that they should take the nonviolent path. the confused/annoyed look on Rick's face shows just how surprised he was that Daryl actually offered an opinion contrary to his own. ever since Rick's "i'm in charge now" speech at the end of season two, i can't remember a time when Daryl didn't act as Rick's lieutenant. maybe we're seeing a bit of shift in power. maybe they'll make out in the next episode.
  • i understand we're supposed to be getting some sort of tension out of the hospital people and care about the clash between the pseudo-cops and the rest, but i just don't care for some reason. i've cared about Hershel and his people, i've cared about the people at Woodbury, i've cared about Morgan, the list goes on, but i find the hospital almost wholly uninteresting. and i'm even in the minority who cares about Beth.
  • if Eugene's gurgle wasn't the announcement of his turning, it was sure meant to sound like it.
  • this seems out of character for Abraham. i understand we're supposed to get that he's gone through a mind-bending betrayal, but based on what we've seen of him, he's a man of action. threaten his family? you die. finds his family dead? puts a gun in his mouth in less than half a minute. find a seemingly safe book store haven? can't stay, have to get to DC. i'd believe he would do something very stupid before i'd believe he would simply sit on the highway for several hours.
  • i lay a decent portion of the blame for what's most likely about to go down on Noah. he vouched for Bob the cop when they were initially talking with the captives, and that likely swayed everyone's barometer in regards to whether they trusted him.
  • i don't think we're done with the preacher yet. i'm trying to figure out if he's running away in disgust at the group's actions with a desire for revenge or simply getting out of a situation which sickens him. the look in his face as he stopped on the road seems to suggest the former, but it could have also been the nail he just pulled out of his foot. they were heavy on the religious imagery at the church; how intriguing would it be to have a character who literally refused to kill walkers, but survived? a Book of Eli-ish character whom God seems to be protecting? i'm assuming the chances of the show doing anything like that are tiny because they don't want to alienate any large part of the audience, but it would at least be interesting.

Very insightful list. 2 other things:
- Judith's crying and making sounds really bothered the priest...why, you would think he would be happy to see a survived baby and see it as a blessing
- could the hospital cops have let Noah go knowing there is another group out there. And his job was to lead the hospital cops to them

Just a few notes on those..

- Eugene's gurgle was meant to sound like turning.. very much like Rick on the couch after waking up from his mini-coma was meant to trick you into thinking he may have turned at the beginning of S4. He'll be fine, IMO.

- I think Gabriel is fleeing from the church because he feels like he's on borrowed time staying there with all the memories and atrocities. He touched the words "You'll Burn For This" while they were boarding up and he probably wants to just leave that place and everything it means.

- Bob may have been playing everybody from the start, even Noah. Way too early to tell with that dude.

i consider a crying baby among the most annoying sounds on the planet, so it didn't really stand out to me. Big Grin that said, if his story is to be believed, he's been hanging out by himself in relative silence since his congregation was clawing at the outside of the church and screaming at him to let them in, so after such a prolonged time of isolation, i'm sure any sustained loud noise is going to grate on him a bit. also: it might also remind him of the children in his congregation or maybe even a child he had at one point.

from the cops' perspective, i don't think Noah would be the best pull for the unknown outside group. they probably figured there were others with Beth, but if they wanted someone to lead them to that group, they should have simply let her escape and follow her. i suppose you could take the leap that Beth shared everything with Noah before their escape plan and assume he'd try to meet up with them when he got out, but there are a lot of variables in that, and it turns out she apparently didn't spill the beans anyway: Noah ended up staying in town and had no idea who Daryl and Carol were when he ran into them.

i did think it was a little fishy that the cops' backup just happened to show up at the right time, complete with automatic weapon firing (was it just one person? was he firing from the driver's seat?). makes it seem like a setup, but the narrative we're being given is these guys are the Keystone Cops; the leftovers. however, i'm starting to think there might be more to the situation than we're being shown.

this is convoluted, and i don't really subscribe to it, but what if Dawn and the cops are playing everyone? what if she recognized early on that the dynamic between civilians and cops in the hospital might be "too equal" and worked with the other officers to make it appear she was barely holding onto control of her force? it allows them to keep power by mostly-indirect coercion, painting the situation as an unstable one where the cops might just start capping people at any time. this would actually encourage the officers to indulge in some of their more base impulses (lollipop, anyone?) and give Dawn the scapegoat we've seen her use several times to thwart requests from residents, all while keeping people around to wash their clothes, heal their wounds, and generally be servants. this would explain by Bob was trusted by Noah, but turned out to be more aggressive; i'm sure Dawn would pick some of the officers to pretend to be "nice" and in favor of changing things so they could gather intel from the civilians. it's far from a bulletproof theory, but something to think about.

Placing bets on Gabriel dying in a fire. Perhaps a church fire.

There's a lot of character development potential with the priest. He'll seriously question his faith, he'll realize that faith alone won't keep him alive and he will have to do what it takes to survive. Probably becoming a bad a** zombie killing machine.

I also think they will realize Eugene isn't totally useless. There were a couple references last episode about Eugene showing them how to do things, like the water filter. In an emergency survival situation, knowledge can be just as valuable a resource as food, water, & ammo.
