State officials are investigating why thousands of fish washed up dead on the shores of the Arkansas River last week.
Officials are expected to release their estimate of the total number of dead fish Monday, local NBC station KARK 4 News reported. It is likely to be in the hundreds of thousands.
The fish were found Thursday by a tugboat operator along a 20-mile stretch of the Arkansas River near the city of Ozark.

EDIT: Also, it would be very likely that a lot of other animals would be dead around that area. Sure, it could be a disease that only affects one type of fish and one type of bird, but that's probably extremely unlikely.
