I can't even imagine how it would be to kiss DD bye for school and then never see her smiling face again. While my dh and I were on a trip for a few days end of last month, my 15 year old decided to take the car and drive to get a soda from a fast-food place. Thank goodness she forgot to take the receipt out of the car. I discovered it and needless to say was beyond upset. She has a learner's permit and has driven many times (with a responsible adult in the car with her), but she is still no where near good enough to drive on her own. And - she broke the law!!!! She is grounded until Halloween, no phone, no computer, no social life. She doesn't understand the gravity of the situation. They think nothing could happen.

I used this almost exact example of what could happen. I told her how terrible things happen all the time to totally legal drivers - a kid runs out in front of you - accidents happen. Imagine carrying the burden of hurting someone when you shouldn't have been on the road at all. The burden of carrying that emotional baggage around forever...{{{shudder}}}. And...the families....{{{shudder}}}}

MY dd I think understands and has taken her punishment well. Many people I've talked to think I was too harsh in not letting her attend homecoming. One person even said "Come on - homecoming only happens a few times in a person's life. Ground her after homecoming". To which I replied...yes, and lucky for her she has two more homecomings to look forward to. If something would have happened the cops wouldn't have said "oh - homecoming is this weekend? Well, why don't you report to the jail after homecoming.". Heck no...I'm a TCC meanie. Reputation to uphold. nod

And if your DD had run over one of their kids or smashed the car into their car/property, I'm sure they'd be totally fine with her waiting until after homecoming to reap the consequences of her actions... sheesh! (never knew anyone to have a ruined life because they missed homecoming - but lots of folks have ruined their lives over foolish decisions!)

If (when??) my kids do something that foolish - oy. Providence help us all... Best case scenario is my kid would be tomato staked for so long she'd think she was permanently attached!!
