Holy hell, this house stuff with my parents is ridiculous. Apparently the company that bought the house told us they would help cover moving expenses (some program they had going) if we were out 2 weeks after they gave us notice. So, it's been a month and my dad called...there's no program any longer and there's been no communication about when we need to be out. Seriously? The bank wouldn't give them THREE days to do a deed in lieu of foreclosure and now the company that has the house doens't give a crap? Ridiculous.

So now I have to pull the money for a rental truck out of mid-air apparently. And no Thanksgiving with my brother, SIL, niece and nephew down in FL now Frown
how far away are you guys moving? if it's not too far, post on craigslist looking for someone with a big van or decent sized box truck that would drive you guys from one place to another and you guys would load - just like a moving truck.
offer to pay a nominal amount, or to pay in stockpile items, or meals, or GCs.
you can also do the same for moving help. people do that on craigs all the time and get help. think about it this way - you are tight on money and need a way to afford a truck but have other things to give. someone else is likely tight on money and has a truck but needs household supplies, or gift cards for christmas or whatever. a win-win.

another option - if you are not moving far, uhaul has a van for 19.99 a day + tax. in some parts of the country mileage is included. in other parts of the country there is a charge. fits a queen size mattress (just to give you sense of height)...

....I haven't seen the BF ad yet, but we are getting some things in off the truck that are marked "2 day sale". ...
oooh, thanks for reminding me!
if you go here [target.com]... you can sign up to get a sneak preview of the 2-day sale... which runs on 11/26 and 11/27. when i tried last night, after I hit submit it went to an error page so I have no idea if it took the info or not. Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)

typical Target programming. laugh out loud

i'm wondering, can they put up some really great computer programmers up for sale this holiday season? maybe we could all chip in and buy the programmers for Target as a christmas present... after all it's important to give if you want to receive. Cool

I can make you feel young again! Stick Out Tongue I'm 34 also (lots of '76 people in here apparently) and my oldest DS is married, owns a house, and his own business! EEK! The woman he married is only 2 years younger than me. When we went to visit this last summer, she asked if she could call me "Mom" ummm...NO! And to complicate things even more, she has a 14 year old and a 7 year old. So, the oldest is 5 years younger than my DS (who is now her step-dad) and the youngest is exactly 1 week younger than my youngest DD. My DS is stubborn though, you can not tell him anything, and if you try to tell him "not" to do something, he only does it faster. He'll either succeed greatly or fail miserably. It's just the way he is.
Alright, I feel a little younger laugh out loud I would have straight up punched that bitch for asking such a question, daughter-in-law or not Cool

Is it your DH that has the game store? I recently picked up a nice OriginalGangster NES Nintendo system with complete remotes and gun, plus extra controllers and about 10 games for $10

I sold my old ass PS2 at a kids consignment sale yet none of the accessories or games went. It kills me that gamestop will only give me $11 for the PS2 DJhero I just bought not too long ago for $50ish but we want to get rid of all of it and get Wii to go with the Xbox santa is bring Thanx to the Target ad mistake.

We're moving about 600 miles and have my furniture and my parents furniture, plus washer and dryer, fridge, etc. Since we're not getting any money to move, we're also taking the stove and stuff like that. laugh out loud

I'm hoping to find someone to "pay" in stockpiled stuff to help my dad move the heavy stuff. I can move furniture, but not the heavy stuff like washer, fridge, etc.

It's same DS that has the game store. It's www.gamewerks.com He owns the Ozark, MO store (it's a franchise). He won't be in till Wed, I think. He had to go to the distributer to pick up Black Ops for his store.

What was the Xbox ad mistake? It's probably over, but curiosity and all. Wink

you can definitely get moving help in exchange for stockpile. post in craiglist ASAP.

okay, 600 miles is a lot. so you'll atleast need a one-day rental (24hrs) on a truck. likely 2 days given loading/unloading time.

couple of things that get you discounts -

1) midweek rentals. most people try to rent around a weekend

2) most people want smaller/midsize trucks. if you agree to rent the really big one, you'll often get a discounted rate because they have a hard time moving those. if you do that, you can also post on craigs and see if anyone would consider sharing with you. if so, you load all your stuff at the back. then put large bookshelves as a barrier and wrap those shelves in blankets and strap them around the shelves. then begins the other person's stuff in truck. so there stuff comes off the truck first, and goes on to the truck last. Big Grin

3) if you give the rental place advance notice, sometimes they will cut you a discount if they can plan, because often they need to get trucks over from one location to another, and basically you're doing that for them.

4) if any of you have a AAA membership, there are discounts with some truck companies

5) if you have multiple cars, another option is to get one good sized truck and two trailers... you'll have to play around with pricing.

6) remember this time of year is the slow time for all moving/storage services. which means you are in the driver's seat LMAO (sorry, couldnt resist). price out at each different company, and even different locations and then take the two lowest, and ask the second lowest one to better their offer over the lowest one.

7) finally, a cautionary tale: when you guys put stuff in there, make sure to securely wrap everything and i mean EVERYTHING in painter's plastic. even boxes. years ago we rented a large truck for a cross country move. it was spring/early summer and there was a large band of storms moving through the south, central and eastern parts of the nation Facepalm as we hit the first of the heavy rain storms, we felt something cold and smelly dripping onto us in the driver's cabin. the roof was leaking!!! and leaked for 36 hours because it rained straight all the way. turned out, the roof leaked inside the storage area of the truck also. we had laid plastic and blankets on stuff, but we had not tightly sealed everything with plastic. wood furniture was damaged. couches damaged. papers and books soaked and damaged. electronics damaged. worse yet, one of the braking systems on the truck failed while we were driving and the governor (controls acceleration) was malfunctioning so it kept kicking in at 45 mph!!! do you know what it is like driving a 26 foot truck on the highway in pouring rain with big rigs flying past you and honking at you and cutting you off because you are slowing them down and realizing that when they cut you off you can't even brake hard because you are about to lose all your braking power with a full truck in sheets of rain??? FRIGHTENING.
lesson - test drive your empty truck for a few miles before you fill it up with your stuff. make sure the parking brake (key for hills) works. make sure all the brakes work, there are no warning lights, no roof leaks. headlights and taillights work. horn works. and most of all make sure that darn governor doesn't kick in at 45!

penske has some major discounts on its site. 20% off for a one way rental when you reserve online. AAA discounts. more.

this definitely a do your homework dealio.

also, post in the SD lounge, or in the Help me Find a Deal forum. you never know - there may be penske/uhaul etc dealers on SD, or someone with a truck willing to help. put the word out. and post on your FB page, explaining the situation. you just never know who can/will help!

I was born in 76 too! I wish I could be a target programmer, I would fix their POS system. But I have a funny feeling that they outsource their programmers just like they do their call center. Frown

if that is the case, then their programming should be good. india has some of the top programmers in the world. then again, i'm sure they have some of the crappiest ones, too. laugh out loud just depends what kind of talent you hire/look for/pay for. and also depends how well you communicate the needs/problems.

i know in store there is a clear and wide communication gap when it comes to understanding coupons, or how coupons work, or how coupon redemption works. me thinks that goes farther up the food chain. and certainly would translate to overseas workers, because manufacturer coupons aren't used in many places around the world.

imo it's in-house b/c i worked at a company that did their time and attendance/staffworks in-house and it was just as amateurish crap programming. it literally took twice the amt of time to use the computer to write a schedule than to do it by hand b/c you had to fix all these really stupid mistakes and it took forever. i would bump into a former co-worker periodically and one of the last times i saw him, the first thing that came out of his mouth was they got rid of *time and attendance* after 13 yrs! i always felt they hung onto it so long b/c of politics or nepotism.

if they had outsourced it, i'm sure there are many experienced software companies since the US economy is absolutely driven by purchase power. there are hundreds of supermarket companies alone. i think they would have been able to demand the software company fix the problem immediately after the first media report way back in august, was it? target is like the number 2 toy seller after walmart and amongst the top 10 retailers and no software company would have wanted to lose their business.

Got some Hall's Cough Drops and used the BOGO Free coupon.

I was thinking that the coupons brought up the CCV screen. Now that I think more about it the coupon scanned and just took off $0.00. The cashier noticed it and manually entered the amount. I am not liking this.

green, thanks for the suggestions Smilie

Luckily, we've done a few cross country moves before and my dad can pack like nothing else (it's a big game of Tetris to him!)- so this move is actually pretty easy for him. And no farking way I'm driving that truck- I'm driving my little Civic Wink

Forgot about using AAA for a discount

HDD God Love You. You are willing to test and try this stuff out daily, and tell us the results Big Grin

I don't think I could stand going in one day thinking, yep, I predict it will do X, possibly Y and then the POS do Z instead (that I hadn't even thought of).
