Quote from getgreen09 :
an oil leak can be because of something small...

a hose seal that has given out (normal wear and tear in old cars)
a valve gasket cover that is leaking

neither is a big fix. if you have a good mechanic, he could be in and out of there for cheap (relatively).

the car smoking could be because of several reasons... oil leaking onto some hot surface and burning up. the car out of coolant because it hasn't been filled in a while/because he has a coolant leak or a blown radiator. but it could also be something as simple as a fuse blown on a fan.

chances are, it is something simple. and a good/honest mechanic will tell you what it is. did it smell of burning oil when it started smoking up? did he notice the car engine heat indicator go up into the redline area before he noticed smoke? is there any coolant left in the coolant reserve tank (generally sits next to radiator). did the engine oil light come in before it started smoking?

i wouldn't go by the 350k number. if it is a well taken care of car, you could get it as good as new with a few hundred dollars in repairs - a month or two of car payments on a new car.

plus, because you've had it in your family for so long it's a known quantity. never know what you'll get with someone else's used car.
Thanks.. I know it could be alot of things.. DH just thought it was bad because he has struggled with the car leaking oil for some time and has had a problem with a previous vehicle.
My DS added oil last week (he puts it in every other week). Then drove it to school and back this week. On his last day, he called DH and said he noticed it smoking when he parked. It was not running hot.. and had plenty of water (this his fills several times a week because the car has had problems with that as well).. actually that is one reason my DH stopped driving it. He travels so far to work and sits in alot of traffic and the car would overheat all the time. He always carried 2 gallons of water with him every where he went.

Anyway, Friday, he drove to the movies and parked it.. on the way home it started smoking and the oil light came on. he parked it and called us, then after he added a quart of oil, I guess the light went off, he drove a few miles and it came on and started flashing.. and the car started making "noises" DH said it sounds like the valves or something?? I am not a car person at all laugh out loud

We do have a mechanic in the family.. he hasn't always been trustworthy or reliable due to a history of drug issues.. But, he is supposed to be doing well now, and clean, so he is gonna come check it this week. but from his conversation with DH on the phone, he doesn't think it sounds too good.

Felt like garbage today, but had to go out to a graduation party, so I stopped by target. Could hardly find anything worth buying.. Maybe I felt too bad, or maybe the deals aren't too good. I didn't see a good cashier when I went to the register, so I didn't want to push it with so many beepers lately.. Did get one of the sonicare, some gift bags (paper tq), suave, and degree.. almost everything beeped Frown When I was leaving, I saw 2 of my favorite jedi cashiers on the register, but couldn't get up the energy to go back.. I did rebuy the Keurig kcup holder thingy. Bought one last week for 24.99, and this week they were 19.99. Didn't have my receipt handy for a PA, so I just rebought and will take one back with the old receipt.

Came home to a package on the door from target.com . Thought for a moment maybe I had gotten the good girl gift from santa and target like tootsie, but it was a gift for my DD.. I thought it was kinda weird.. Tell me what you guys think.. Our aunt sent money to the older kids, but decided to buy a gift for my toddler. Rather than ask me, she talked to my MIL who mentioned that my DD loved her brush and mirror.. so, she sent this [target.com].. but it isn't a child's play mirror at all. It is rather big and I can't see my DD, who isn't even 3 yet, carrying this around. It has a big sticker on it that says "not a toy" and "not for children under 12". The thing is a real mirror made of glass.

I found the giraffes (three of them), but apparently stuffed animals are NOT TOYS for the $4 off (they were even $9.99 before the sale tomorrow, as that's what the tag on the ear has). Sounds like a load of FALSE ADVERTISING to me. I had a run planned that included the Crayola Pixies, two stuffed giraffes and some Snickers Nutcrackers, but it all fell to pieces when the same AssMan told me that THOSE $9.99 toys were not included. I didn't buy anything and wasted 26 miles in gas Annoyed and got soaked in the process (as I went to 3 different wags...only one had the giraffes).

I'm gonna sit here and eat chocolate frosting out of the can.

Got home at 1:30 and dh asked if I was going to make the cheesecake. :e ek: So... yeah, I did. *laugh* I can't say no to that man. I know how much he likes my cheesecakes! Thank goodness they taste good warm cuz there's not much time before the party.

Glad you survived! Breakfast with Santa sounds so fun. I am such a horrible mom, I have forgotten to take my kids to see him this year. We usually go to a Christmas party somewhere that has a Santa. I hate the mall Santa thing for some reason.

Wow, it looks like a toy, but yeah not really appropriate for a 3 yr old. It was a good try, very sweet she tried so hard but might be better to put it away for a good while or see if there is a similar toddler friendly version.

I ran out of the Sonicare TQs I printed. I must have printed 20 because I ordered a set of MQs on the bay and they are gone as of tonight. I gave one sonicare MQ & TQ to my cashier he was pretty good and really nice, (and was like WOW awesome deal on the toothbrush I've always wanted one) he did deny a few MQs but not a big deal. I guess that means I have 19 sonicare now. So weird, it doesn't seem like I have that many. I guess I've shopped a little more than I thought, but I have so much shopping to do! So, is 19 a lot? I should have ordered two sets, oh well. I must be a crazy horder to even ask. Why do I want more of them? I am planning on giving a lot of them for Christmas, selling a few would be good too.

So a 20 min drive to ST is not that bad right? Because I had to go back!! ARG! I was looking forward to just chilling at home but when I went to put the two $29.99 DS games I bought up for Christmas they were not in any of my bags! I searched and searched again.

I called them and they thought a cashier had brought two DS games to CS but they were not sure because they were nowhere to be found. They said they 'may' have put them back out on the floor. I was like, what are you talking about? Why would someone put those back out on the floor if a customer has paid for them they are a customers property and should be held at CS for if they come back! They said to bring my receipt so they could have AP research it and then I could get the DS games.

I did not want to go back but had a bad feeling if I waited until monday when I would have time, that something would go wrong, mainly the asshat who works every monday. So I did another small run and AP researched it and said that "Yes, the DS games were left behind" I can only imagine what he was thinking watching video of my transaction and all my coupons I saved around $550 on that receipt Roll Mostly because of the Sonicares (6) and how they figure the TPC into that figure, plus they add GCs to that you saved total too (at least when I did the math that one time it was) and I had the Olay, Glade, oh and Starbucks, (forgot to get some coffee filters though!) along with all the Qs. Embarrassment Yeah, I usually don't do that, but man you sure save a lot on those Sonciares.
I have never made coffee before, except at a hotel, and I still can't (I forgot filters), it is to late right now, but still. Someday soon I will make some coffee at home for the very first time Stick Out Tongue bounce Roll
I hope Starbucks is good, I got vanilla, caramel, and pikes peak I think.
Oh no, it is 1 am no wonder I am rambling and can't think straight. Sleepy2

Meesh!!! You have to try these things! I swear people ask me if I whiten my teeth or how I got my teeth so white. I only whitened my teeth once when the CWS very first came out. After Qs they are only like $3 (but then you have tax). Also I used to HATE getting my teeth cleaned because they are so sensitive that it would hurt when they scraped them and hurt for a few hours after. All my appts this year they have barely had to scrape at all, they are like WOW you have clean teeth! Keep doing what your doing!

I am using Listerine pre brush whitening rinse, then Sonicare, then floss, then maybe 3 times a week rinse with the purple Listerine. Sorry I don't remember when the TPC ends but one store was out so I grabbed some raincheck tags, can those be scanned at another store? I can see if I can get a raincheck scanned I keep forgetting, after my runs I am always wiped out and thinking STC! STC! Get me outta here. lol

Plus the sonicare just makes my teeth feel so much more clean and smooth than any other toothbrush I ever had.

l2b... that car heating in traffic business: ask DH, did it only heat when it was idling/stuck in traffic, but was fine when driving along at highway speeds? if so, it's likely nothing to do with water. it's likely just a simply fan fuse. 3-4 bucks out of pocket. replace fuse. car cool. done.

your description just narrowed down one simple thing: the car was smoking cos it was running out of oil, causing engine parts to grind. no lubrication = smoke and noise. so you've obviously got a bad oil leak in that car. could be expensive but might not be. the seals on hoses do give out over time. it really isn't a big fix at all. if it's the valve gasket covers, that could be more expensive. not sure why your son thinks it is the valves themselves. a valve replacement is about 200 bucks a piece, depending on car make and the mechanic you are using.

if you go to an advance auto parts, they frequently have nice people working there who know what they are doing. and for small repairs like this, they can even look right off the bat and tell you what the problem is, plus give you a cost estimate on the side. many of them are mechanics on the side and can do the replacement for you, too. so if you want a second opinion, that's an option. AAP also has huge discount coupons like 40 off 100, plus cashback on several sites. i saved 85 bucks on a battery replacement this summer: what would have cost me 200 bucks at the mechanic was replaced for free with just a $45 cost for the battery and supplies. woot

but it sounds like you guys are just tired of dealing with the problems in this car and ready to be done. totally understandable.

sorry you guys are having to deal with car probs right now! hug

staples is a GREAT place for that. they have tons of boxes from the cases of paper they get. cleaner than grocery boxes. hey, they just carried reams of paper or file tabs or some such thing!

wags: start reading wags threads... wags needs some commitment, but once you start doing it you will a) be hooked b) manage to stock up on ALL your household/health and beauty/otc needs for pennies on the dollar and in large volume quantities... wags changed my life. i love, love, love em.

which brush do you use, if you don't mind my asking, please? i'd love some recommendations cos I'm thinking of getting 2 as gifts for people who are very picky and rarely get stuff like this for themselves. i know if I get these they will use them for many years to come. i've been dying to try them, and was perfectly happy to try the T one if I could lay my hands on it, before deciding if I wanted to upgrade or if the different ones are a marketing gimmick. but my gift recipients are not the kinds of folks who would experiment/explore. if I get them the starter model and they don't like them will never try sonicare again. Facepalm so i want to pick carefully since sonicare brushes are universally highly regarded. thanks!

4 nice groupon deals for gifts/for the home this holiday...

1. Canvas on Demand: this is a very cool site. they take any photograph you give them and turn it into a gallery wrapped canvas. you can pick the dimensions. you can also have the photograph made into a painting for an additional charge, but I like the simple idea of just a photograph turned into a gorgeous large canvas. especially if it is a picture you took on vacation, or an old childhood picture, or a family portrait.
the groupon is $45 for a $127 16x20 canvas, but in addition COD has a 22% off sale this weekend, allowing you to go bigger. If you want to do that you can also get the groupon as a gift card. Hot Deals thread here. Please rep OP. they list Omaha, but the deal appears available at multiple groupon sites nationally: i randomly checked phoenix, tucson, little rock, wash dc, new york and boston. all have it. doesn't matter which one you pick.
eta: canvas on demand just went to the frontpage while i was writing this. so hurry if you want. there is an additional 20% discount through shopdiscover if you have a discover card. so you can get a canvas for probably around 13-15 bucks shipped!

2. while checking boston site -- it was the last one on the list i was randomly checking, discovered a few other good options. $10 for $20 soft cover 40 page photobook from A&I books [groupon.com]. you supply the photos, they make the books. you get to layout the entire book on their software, and then supply the digital photos. you can get this one as a gift card, too. a super nice present to give someone - as a fully created book or a giftcard so they can make their own book. and just like the previous offer there is so much you can do with this in terms of what photos to pick. i love the idea.

3. $25 for $50 of customizable gifts at zazzle.com [groupon.com]... not sure if any of you have ever done zazzle. but it is a very cool site. you can make everything from cards and calenders to mugs and mousepads to bags and baseball caps. upload your own design, create one on the site or pick one from the many many custom designs that others have uploaded. there are funny message ones, graphics, pictures - an infinite array of options. zazzle often has coupon codes also... so google for those.

4. $10 for $20 worth of organic products from kaia house [groupon.com]. they make organic skincare, makeup and cosmetics. the products are free of many of the hasrsh/dangerour/carcinogenic chemicals found in common products we use everyday from body wash to face cleansers to makeup. their products are all decently priced, so a $20 groupon could net you a few things. i've lately developed major fragrance allergies (total pain) as well allergies to some of the preservatives used in commercial/mainstream products (major pain). so i've actively been looking for alternatives. haven't tried kaia yet but they have great reviews.

of course remember to look for cashback options for all these sites.
and remember that gorupon that has a $10 referral credit for each new account you refer that makes a purchase - basically every time someone else signs up with their email address using your referral link, and then makes a purchase, your referring account gets a $10 referral credit. Big Grin

I often chuckle at my shopping habits before I became "informed". I used to think waiting until stuff went on sale to buy it was a great planning. Then I started clipping coupons last year, and thought getting stuff at 50% was just wonderful. Then I found SD and was super excited to get stuff for free/almost-free. Now, I'm really informed and love the better-than-free deals that help make up for the tax I have to pay pre-coupon. I'm still no where near the league most of you are, but I'm doing much better.

Jeeze, what a way to get back to T shopping. Parking lot jammed, isles jammed, registers jammed. I figure it will be a good time to use alot of q's since everyone's in a hurry...but noooooooooo. Why, you didn't buy THIS toothbrush, and why is THIS coupon taking off so much...Let me call my supervisor...ugh. At least I got the Sonicare with the TQ and 25.00 MQ but I had to dump the rest of the run.
Sorry about the bug run hug I hear ya on the packed store and parking lots. I should've stayed away when I saw that the secondary parking lot at T was full last night. I did make out STFC but it took forever to get through the store...I did have several Rx to pick up with the RX TQ Wink

That's FUNNY. I think we'd all understand boxes that were previously used
Yep! My SS is getting a reused box. I even gave a couple people reused gift bags. One of my pet peeves is greeting cards and gift bags. Such a racket IMO. My in-laws heart greeting cards. They will send one for every small, and even insignificant event. Then, they are offended when you don't keep all of the cards on display on the mantle. It drives me nuts.

In the past, if you need a free box and don't want/need to pay flatrate, I pop the USPS box apart and re-tape it inside out so it's just a brown box Whistling Wink
Crylol I used to do this All.The.Time. with the USPS Tyvek envelopes. one cashier at the post office got really pissed and wanted me to open the package I was mailing to prove it wasn't the USPS envie. I told her I would be back later and then used the self-serve kiosk Evil

Is that a good deal? Never did the B.A.B. and the one store around here went out of business.

Tootsie: how was the birthday and party bus? Did you take full advantage of having a designated driver? I would've been one drunk shenanigizer! Roll

We are getting a crapload of snow right now...hope we can get outside to make a snowman today Smilie

two good-sized teddy bears shipped for 18 bucks? i think that's a good deal as stuffed toys go, since you can't really get a good-sized, good quality teddy bear for 9 bucks normally. plus they have a deal that you get a $10 gc for $5 with a $30 purchase. well this is a $30 purchase before the bogo code... so in theory that should remain, too. and one could do cashback...mr r e b a t e s has 6% cashback plus a $5 signup bonus and a $5 referral bonus. I'm not too sure where to post this, but I have a question for you frequent Target shoppers....does your Target charge you tax on an item before the manufacturer coupon is taken off? I just noticed my Target doing this...is this right?
