How many of you still play games using computer

1,058 391 January 27, 2011 at 11:34 AM in Chat (2)
I was just wondering that this might be an interesting topic to talk about.

I used to play games using my PC 3 years ago, The trouble I found was the constant requirement for upgrades. New games keep demanding more computing and graphics power to play. Finally I gave up on the PC and bought the PS3 instead. Now I feel much happy as I don't have to go through hardware requirements once again.

I still see some sder's interested in powerful graphics card even today.

So the question is...how many of you guys still use the computer to play video games, If yes, then how do you guys keep up with the constant upgrades demanded by the new games these days? If you keep on upgrading, don't you think thats not economical?

Do you guys think switching to XBOX or PS3 makes sense?

Note: Consider only games that require high end graphics like MOH, COD, etc.....

Advantages on using PS3/XBOX 360

1...No need for any hardware upgrade.
2...Games can be easily resold on ebay. No DRM problems.
3...Can use this sitting on a couch and play using a big screen TV. More comfort.
4...Get more controllers, then the whole family can have a very good time with games. More suitable for time pass during special occasions like friends get togethers.

Yeah, but that $7.99 is about equal to $60 in today's money when you factor in inflation. Big Grin

Have you ever tried Bookworm Adventures or Zuma? Very addictive.
I've played Zuma on my iPod and Bookworm online. I like this. I beat Zuma on my iPod. I know with most PopCap games the PC version adds a lot more, so I'll have to check it out. I actually have both games from when PopCap did the charity bundle for Haiti.

I had to delete Zuma and Bejeweled 2 as they were too addictive. Now if I could only find to way to delete SD, think off all the free time I would have. laugh out loud

Yeah, I've played a lot less PC games since I gave up MMORPGs.

I will also admit the increased sex since quitting MMORPGs is definitely a good trade off imo...

This depends on the person. I always have a need for a desktop computer, so making it a "gaming" rig means sticking in a graphics card that costs half of what a PS3 does.
we have laptops already and use them frequently while watching a game on TV or lazing about, so a gaming desktop in the other room would only be used for gaming.

i only have one desktop left, and it's my file/media server. i don't want another one: having a laptop is way more useful.

Why not plug in a controller?
why not get a console that already has a controller?

This goes for consoles too, depending on the game. If I want to race Forza or Need for Speed against someone else, they need their own console and copy of the game.
i'm talking about playing with one other person in the same house. true, with consoles, we are limited to games with split-screen local multi, but that's still a pretty big swath of games. at that point, you only need one console and one copy of the game. we just don't play the ones that require two consoles; easy as that. since (as i mentioned before), we're casual gamers at best, it doesn't matter if we can't play a few big titles.

Quote :
No, you really don't have to.
i would. doesn't matter if you agree with it, i'm talking about my situtation, not yours.

This is SD, it should only cost 1/2 to 3/4 of that (tops!) if you built both systems from scratch.
even ArsTechnica's Hot Rod box (which would be closer to what i would probably buy) comes in at a little over $1,250. i buy quality components that are just a bit back from the leading edge from brands i trust, not some processor/mobo combo just because it's on the front page at slickdeals. and i'm way past the point in my life where i'll wait for sales for weeks or months just to save money. assuming we're looking at the Ars box, even a 25% discount still takes us to about $1,000 apiece. i have spent less than $2,000 (including games) on my Wii and Xbox systems in the entire time i've owned them. and that includes Guitar Hero: World Tour band kit on release day.

also: keep in mind i don't even have an external monitor. i don't have headphones or speaker systems. i have one decent mouse left over, and i'm using it at work. we only have one desk. i literally have no system/gaming peripherals left over, so they would be added expenses.

Why are you listing retail for PC games but discounts for console games? Confused
$60 was for two copies of the PC games ($30 apiece). that's about what i see them going for, except the Steam deals. i've only paid more than $40 for one Xbox game, with most falling in the $30 range.

This depends on the games you want to play.
see above.

Don't forget buying a replacement when it fails.
yes, the early Xboxes were terrible. the newest batches have good stats and PS3 hardware has been pretty solid all the way through. on top of that, the vast majority of friends i've had who were early adopters and got the RRoD simply sent it back and got a new unit, moreso since MS extended the warranty across the board.

so since it's just a matter of sending it back, it's just like an RMA. i've been doing this long enough that i've gotten bad RAM, optical drives, and other components, even from good brands. i still have to send those back and wait to get them.

Many games cost $60 for the console.
now who's not a slickdealer? Big Grin

Coverlaugh Yeah, plus new controllers and accessories, downloadable content, etc.
for the Wii, i totally agree: a full set of Wiimotes with WMPs can cost nearly as much as the console. add in good rechargeable batteries, and it adds up. fortunately, the console itself costs about as much as a high-end graphics card.

i haven't found accessories to be a big expense with the Xbox, though: all our controllers are wired and they only cost ~$30 apiece, so while it's not cheap, it was less than $100 to buy all the accessories we're going to buy. the Kinect is outside the discussion since a comparable product isn't even available for PCs and i'm not going to buy the first generation anyway. again: this is my situation, not yours.

i don't really buy DLC: i have so little time to devote to gaming nowadays that i just play the normal game and move to the next.

Quote :
Not by a long shot.
actually, for my situation, it is true. can say with a very high level of confidence that my wife and i gain more utility per unit of expense from consoles than we would from PCs.

it's awesome if you're cool shoestringing a couple desktops together, would rather play on two screens than one, and don't care about enjoying gaming with your friends when they come over or taking your gaming system with you so friends/family can enjoy it, but some have different priorities. notice i never said consoles are better for anyone else: i simply stated they were better for my specific situation. unless you can look at the spreadsheets i made to break down the decision and know my life situation/priorities/tendencies better than me, you really have no rebuttal.
