I'm allergic. The shipping is reasonable, but the bees kill the deal for me.

Out of curiosity were these commercial beekeepers or hobbyists you contacted. YMMV I suppose.
Actually, I've done a couple extractions, and there are reasons for the 3x charge. #1, honeybees are protected in some states. If an exterminator kills the hive, he can be charged. #2. You have to know what you're doing and need special equipment to extract them safely. #3, you have to work slowly and carefully to avoid damaging the house, or having the bees attack you constantly while you work. #4. If you don't remove the whole hive, the honey can rot, ferment, and you're left with at best a house that smells like a brewery, but at worse, smells like mold that attracts ants and roaches. #5 only a beekeeper (and few of those as well) know how to do a trap out - which is a way to get the hive to move out of something like a concrete block wall. Also, bee hives are unlike other hives. The cappings can protect the larva from chemical, and they can hatch out even after they've been sprayed. The final reason is to protect the feral/wild genetics to allow for better, future bee generations.

I could've been a doctor or lawyer ... but didn't like how they get all up in everybody's beeswax.

Bee keeper for 46 years
seriously? wow, that's cool. i REALLY want to keep a hive of bees. i love honey and i love the sight of bees buzzing about my parent's gardens. we have a lot of desert succleents (low ground flower types) these last two years and they have been absolutely hummng with bees. the neighbors fear them but i've never been attacked. then again, they've never made a nest at our house... usually inside hollowed out rocks and stuff like that.

do you think it could ever be feasible to keep a small hive in a residential home? 2800 sq feet?

You keep a hive under your bed and you will have a vibrating bed for secs.
