Recently, we've had significant quakes in Chile, Tonga, New Zealand, Indonesia, Japan. That just leaves the west coast of North and Central America... this bothers me.

There was a theory put forth a while back that the effect of lunar gravity on the molten rock in the mantle might cause earthquakes. Basically the moon pulls on the liquid part of the mantle the same way it pulls on the oceans, but to a lesser degree because the mantle is not really liquid it's molten rock. Some scientists believed that this might have caused seismic activity, but that theory has pretty much been completely debunked.

Long story short, yes the moon may play a role but it's relatively small when compared with other factors.

Exactly. Who's arguing that the moon is causing these earthquakes?

I can see how people would think that the moon can cause a tsunami. But this one was caused by the earthquake, and that was not caused by the moon. Maybe that's why people are getting so confused?

My MIL just called to see if we were ok. We're about 10 miles east of Seattle and about 600 feet above sea level. She's been here before so she should know the lay of the land. DH responded with, 'Are you ok mum? I heard there was a mugging in Spain?' (she lives in Belfast) Roll

This is the picture that gets to me. We watched the arieal view of the wave hitting this coastal town last night and sweeping everything away. This angle shows just how high the wave was compared to the buildings in Natori.
That picture is chilling. EEK!

she was probably worried that utilities and other services may have been affected and you were sitting in the dark. I checked in on my friends in Kyoto which hasn't been affected….

here in california they were clearing some of the coast and i just got a call from my step-mother asking whats going on with me purely because the freeways are getting impacted by people on the immediate coast trying to move cars to higher ground.

Yeah, that would make sense but no, she was worried the wave might hit our house.

Back when we lived in Dallas, there was an explosion at a BP oil refinery outside Houston and she called then too to see if we were ok and did we hear/see the explosion. True story.

For the longest time after I moved back up to CT my Mom would call me EVERY SINGLE SNOWSTORM to ask if I had to go into work and tell me to drive safe if I did. Moms are just crazy like that. Dontknow

I watched the live feed for a bit in Santa Cruz at the harbor. It was interesting watching all of the people on the railroad bridge just watching the boats come loose and drift by.

I just watched that video that was linked from the Guardian, oh my. That is so powerful. I can't even imagine how many people have died. There is one part in the video where it sweeps cars that were driving away. I thought the tsunami in Sumatra was horrible, this is right next to it.
