Hi all,

I started this thread for anyone who wants to come here for lite discussion, jokes, and just general discussion and fun.

Everyone is welcome!

I was thinking that maybe it would be helpful to keep the original thread to a bit more of a serious discussion of the clues and answers.

Well - looks like next round of storms are starting up again - gonna log off for tonight. Thanks for all the great links tonight. Judy, Ann, etc, thanks for the carhart and folgers, etc. Got all my El Mont. voting in - hope yall don't mind that I pretty much quit commenting - takes soooo long. If the storms let up tomorrow night, I'll get back with you all.

Buy an external hard drive, find a freeware backup program, and back up your desktop (and netbook) drives regularly. For the desktop, do an "image backup", this basically creates a complete copy of your drive, and you create a boot CD (the backup program should walk you through that) so that you can boot from the CD, plug in the external drive, and recover everything in one shot, and be back where you were when the image was taken. Image it with a FULL image weekly or monthly, and consider incremental backups between full images.

For the netbook, just back up all your personal data and the "Program Files" folder (so you know all the programs you have installed) - since the netbook doesn't have a CD to boot from, an image backup is no good (unless you find a backup program that will create a boot USB drive so you can boot from it before recovering an image from the ext drive.

Try to buy an external drive that is at least 2 times larger than the disks in your desktop and netbook combined, so you can do full and incremental backups (note - once you do a full image backup and verify it, you can generally delete the incremental backups leading up to the full image).

If you do this, and have a hard drive failure in either, you can pop a new drive in and be running again in hours without leaving the house.


Any of my critical data is copied across to multiple machines - some data is on 10 or 20 computers/USB drives. It will be harder to find the latest version of the data than to recover it.

If you're going to use your old keyboard, mouse, display, etc, $1000 is much more than you need to spend. You can get a decent Win7 64-bit system for $500 these days, max out the RAM for another $50-200, and be set for 5 years or more.

Buy it with the memory it comes with, as the 4GB only fills 2 of the 4 slots, and you can probably find 2x2GB kits for the free slots in the Hot Deals forum here for a LOT less than $120, especially if they have a rebate. With Win7 64-bit, you can, and want to, go with the max RAM a system can handle.

Search SD for coupon codes for HP, as they show up often, so you can probably get this system even cheaper (though the coupons sometimes conflict with the Free Upgrades, the HP cart is nice enough to give you the best discount in the final cart when you apply a coupon and Free Upgrades are part of it). And SD often has coupons for the daily sweeps that involve HP systems.

Sometimes we think what we have (our homes, etc.) isn't good enough and we'd like something better. Then we watch the news and see people's homes get blown away or see them all flooded. Really puts things in perspective.
