I can argue for both sides of whether or not it should be sudden death, but the rules are what they are. It was a disappointing loss for the United States, but they had more than their fair share of chances to put the game away. There was a lot of missed (and incredibly close) opportunities in the first half that they should have capitalized on and the penalty kicks were just more missed opportunities for them. I thought the shots that were actually stopped by the goaltender were very predictable.

I'm watching the replay of this match again and its ridiculous that the United States didn't win by 6 goals. They outplayed the Japanese in a superior fashion. Its incredible how many shots missed the goal by what seemed like inches. The first 30 minutes they had about 12 shots on goal where all they had to do was put in in the area of the goal and it would have been a score. Instead they tried to place it in a specific spot and missed the entire net. Facepalm I bet they want the first 30 minutes of that game back.

The reason they abandoned sudden death was to encourage more attacking football. And you know what? This tournament showed that it works.
