Official 2011-12 NHL Thread - Congratulations to the Los Angeles Kings!

Hockey is back! After a summer of tragedy, it's time to drop the puck!

Who's the Cup favorite? Who made the best off season moves? When will Crosby return? When will Doughty sign?

And to start off the season, Mike Modano officially retired yesterday.

laugh out loud I used to hate Milbury, but his opinions are growing on me. Gotta admit the guy likes hockey and hates the teams he used to play and coach against. I can't blame him all that much. That's like saying NESN needs to fire Jack Edwards for hating on Montreal, Philadelphia, and the rest of the NHL.

Also, that was an awesome game yesterday. Fun to watch with plenty of excitement and even a penalty shot at the end. I can't believe the ref caught that hand covering the puck in the crease. Tough angle to get it, but a great call.
Milbury has a long history of being a dick and a failure as a GM and coach.

I admit I don't like Jeremy Roenick, but I'd prefer him over Milbury.

Milbury definitely has a past with the Rangers and their fans: linly [youtube.com]. I love 'Old Time Hockey' laugh out loud

Iagree

I had it out with a few Ranger fans last night about this call and Callahan's 'Holding the stick' penalty. Both calls were legit but those fans kept saying that they were hometown calls.
I didn't see the covering the puck in the crease live. When I saw it on replay, I said it definitely needed to be a Penalty Shot. The Callahan thing I didn't really see but don't mind the call.

It was a good game sans the 1st period, but I think the Winter Classic isn't what it used to be. It's a fun event, but I don't know if I would go if there is one in DC.

Eh. Hometown calls my butt. Both we're clear. Callahan was just pissed that he got caught. laugh out loud I'm glad they called him for it. Too often those calls are let go and they allow too much embellishment to go on.

Yeah, but I like that fact that's he's a dick and OK with throwing his opinion out there regardless of what anyone thinks.

It's a fun event for sure, but there is a reason I didn't go in Boston. It was $600 a seat for obstructed view and you just don't get a good view of the ice. I was much happier watching at home with my dad and a couple of beers that aren't $10 each.

I am glad that he got caught as well. The Ranger fans just see what they want to see.

Plus, the seats are so far away from the ice. I cannot imagine what the upper deck fans are doing during the game. It's Philly, so they were probably just drinking and fighting each other.

I spend money on a lot of ridiculous stuff and even I wouldn't go to this game.

My friends that went last year in Pittsburgh said it was good in a football stadium. I dont know how it would be in a baseball stadium.

I've actually had tickets to two WCs and haven't been to one. laugh out loud

A football stadium would be a little bit better...but did you see the distance from the boards to the stands in yesterdays game? If you have field level seats then there was no possible way that you saw anything on the ice. If you had upper level seats then you were a mile and a half away from the action. It's kind of ridiculous. You are paying all that money to go drink outdoors. laugh out loud

Honestly, I thought about trying to go to the Frozen Four last year that was held outdoorsish. It was in a football stadium, so I think you'd be able to see better there than at a ballpark.

But yeah, it's philly, home of the most classless fans in existence. I haven't met more than one or two Philly fans that weren't complete dickbags.

Frozen Four is in Tampa this year. That should be nice.

I'm sure it'll be good. I want to eventually go to one. I need a vacation away from Boston/Austin. Maybe I'll try and go down for it. Tix are usually very reasonable

They had the Frozen Four here in DC a few years ago. I tried to get tickets since I'm a Caps STH, but it was a lottery only system and I didn't win. As it was I couldn't go anyway - I was out of town for work.

I went to the first Winter Classic (we called it the Ice Bowl here, unofficially) and my seats were in the 100 level endzone at Ralph Wilson Stadium. When the puck came to boards closest to me, I couldn't see the puck. Despite all the snow (and the millions stoppages in play because of it so they could zamboni the ice every 2 minutes of playing time Annoyed), it was fun and I'm glad I went. Although, I wasn't too pleased with the outcome. laugh out loud

I may have more pictures I can find later.

Amazing story!

Hi folks this is Scott Coupal General Manager here at Frenchie's Ford Inc. I gotta tell you I've seen some cool things in my life, but friday night took the grand prize, Mrs. Brenda Hewlett 59 years old won a chance to be one of 5 people to shoot the puck to win a brand new 2011 Ford F150 4x4, Brenda had been in t...he dealership on friday morning to get some service work done to her old truck, & had said "god I wish I could afford a new truck mine is falling apart" Joe Jock my service manager said "here fill out this ballot & win one" both started laughing.

It's a one in a Gazzilion shot from 114 feet away, the opening is almost the exact size of a regulation size hockey puck. Mrs. Hewlett has never even held a hockey stick in her entire life let alone ever shot a puck. The finalists were all on the ice after I drove the new truck onto the ice, I had friends in the back of the truck throwing frisbees into the crowd. After a lap around the arena, I gathered the contestants at the far blue line, I yelled out ladies first , Mrs. Hewlett said "Oh god I don't wanna be first I'm going to look foolish" She put a helmet on grabbed the stick I walked up next to her & said "Let It Go & Believe"

Well the whole arena must have believed & the Christmas angels were upon her. She pulled back the puck in awkward stance Mrs Hewlett is only about 5'3 (the stick was way too big) and she let it fly, I myself & the crowd didn't even think there was enough steam on the puck to even make it to the target, after it passed the second blue line .. I yelled out .. OH ..OH .. the crowd started going absolutely CRAZY .. the puck then decided to get some wheels, feet, legs whatever you wanna call it & went straight into the hole with speed I might add. Needless to say the arena EXPLODED !!

There's a video in the linly, too.

You didn't happen to buy my tickets, did you? laugh out loud I bought some to flip on Stubhub/Ebay/etc. I ended up making enough of a profit to buy a TV for my new house.
