For CA: The VS at the Block and Great Mall that they are NOT outlets, but just regular VS stores. I'll check the Ontario Mills next time I'm there.

the one in ontario mills isnt a real outlet either...
nod Yep, it's just the place to go if you want $50 worth of stuff stolen when you set it down Angry I thought I read that the outlet in Palm Desert had an actual VS outlet?

I tried to play "funny professor" with my class, and it didn't go over for me either. I'm a pretty sarcastic person on a whole, so I tried to add humor while going over my syllabus. I have received a number of extremely poorly written e-mails and requested that my students proofread their e-mails and not talk to me like a friend they're text messaging. I put up a bunch of really egregious grammar mistakes (SHCOOL ZONE, "Illegally Parked Cars will be Fine", "SOTP," etc.) I referenced the book Eats, Shoots & Leavs. The idea is that the phrase, "The panda eats shoots and leaves" is much different than the phrase, "The panda eats, shoots, and leaves." To illustrate my point, I had a picture of a happy panda eating bamboo shoots and leaves. Then, in my next slide, I had a picture of a cartoon panda sitting in pile of bamboo shoots with a gun ready to run.

I thought it was hilarious. No one laughed. I looked like a crazy person with a picture of a homicidal panda...oh well.
hug It's possible that they were turned off by the point you were trying to make. I've given up on correcting misspellings... it seems some are really sensitive about it. They feel like you're being arrogant or a snob or something.

Soap Box My perspective is - spelling is factual, it is either right or wrong... it's not a personal judgement, don't take it personally. It's irritating that some people unabashedly massacre words in verbose Facebook posts and completely break down if someone points out an error. No one is perfect, but if you suck at something, don't wave it around in people's face for all to see and get hurt if someone says something. We are all capable of learning, maybe people are trying to help you communicate more effectively, not attack you. /rant

I think I have to disagree with you. I don't think there's any place for the word "ur," opposed to "your" in an academic e-mail setting. I don't think that's a student error or me making them feel bad. If you're a senior in college, you know how to spell "your." I believe it's just laziness and complete disregard for spell check, opposed to a lack of learning. If I have to read an e-mail riddled with spelling mistakes, a complete lack of punctuation (including periods), and spacing issues, it makes it very difficult for me to help the student. I see nothing wrong with asking students to proofread their e-mails.

I do agree that it's ridiculous when people point out errors on facebook, which is an informal setting. I haven't seen it very much, but I don't doubt that it happens. However, there's a time and a place for complete sentences, full words, and spell check.

I think you're right, seniors in college know that "ur" should be spelled "your" in a professional setting, they just don't think that emailing a prof is an instance where they should have to spell correctly, which is what would annoy me. Like, would the same students disregard grammar, punctuation, and spelling on their resume? Nope...
