Have you ever been sprayed by it? It hurts like hell.
It causes pain and injury.. isn't that the definition of violence?
I would rather the cops arrest the kids one by one. If the kids threw a punch, then the cops could use reasonable force. Remember, there was 35 friggin cops there, and only 50 protestors (and I think not all the 50 were on the sidewalk).
Are you telling me that 35 cops could not arrest 20-50 people?
Did you read the report on how the kids were asked to leave prior? And, that most of them did leave peacefully? The pepper spraying was a last resort because a few refused to leave. They were warned though that if they didn't leave, they would get sprayed.
By the way, I went to UC Davis! It's just not a good thing having ppl camped out in the middle of the campus. They were part of the Occupy Movement. So, I'm sure they were planning on camping out there for a long time in tents and camping gear.
The police stood by, made sure no one was hurt and then the crowd eventually got bored and left. Occasionally people were arrested.. I only remember one incident where someone tried to fight the cops, and he was quickly subdued (and that was justified by the police).. Most of these kids are not going to fight back.. Just cuff them and remove them. Again.. 35 cops in riot gear.. 50 protestors.. I think the cops had the numbers to keep the situation under control.
How is a few kids sitting on the sidewalk a public safety concern.. or a few tents pitched on the quad.. As I said earlier, the university doesn't seem to care when kids pitch tents for sporting events.
This is a case of some university officials and the police on a power trip.
I expect more maturity out of policemen than I do from college students and lounge posters.

YES!!! That would be much more entertaining to watch
Plus, no way for the cops to know whether it would cause asthama or an allergic reaction on the kids. It was irresponsible.
What did the cops do before pepper spray was invented? Didn't they arrest people that refused to comply? I think they did. The cops had the numbers to pull it off.
Instead Sargent Lardass in the picture was too lazy or maybe he just wanted the perverse pleasure of spraying the kids (much like some responders here are celebrating the action)
Our university loved it. Since it was all about sports.
When it's 50 kids "occupying wall street", the administrators/police feel threatened (for what reason, I have no clue) and feel the need to force the kids to stop. The police/officials are morons.. this is only going to make the movement stronger and cause more problems.
Like I said, most of our protests did not last long because the university was smart and didn't show that they cared. If some kid wants to spend his whole freshman year camping out on the quad, is that really a big deal?
Most of the students are going to leave for Xmas break soon anyhow.. it would naturally disperse at that time.

You do know what's in pepper spray, right? It's just the active ingredient in peppers...capsaicin. It's like cutting peppers in your kitchen and accidentally touching your eyes.
Picking them up one by one would have caused more of an issue......do you actually think they would just sit there and get cuffed and walk? No, from what I see there they would have fought back and then the billy clubs would have had to come out and then people would really be crying violence.
How would you feel if your kid acted like an idiot, causing public outrage, caught on film, breaking the law like that?

Also, as I stated in a previous post, cordon off the area and let them stay there as long as they like. But, don't let anymore ppl enter to resupply them. Then, let the protesters get really hungry and thirsty. Even have lunch trucks parked nearby!

Maybe a better deterrent would have been to advance towards them with a can of deodorant--they probably all would have split without incident.

Perfect example would be dumb students violating the law, by blocking the sidewalk. Grats to all of the smart kids who didn't do stupid shit.

How do you know they weren't going to fight back? They were already breaking the law and being defiant and they very well could have had weapons. This was a very large group of very immature college students.

But at my school ( UC Davis too! ), they did NOT allow camping out on campus for sporting events and certainly NOT drinking on campus!
By the way, the campus at UC Davis will ticket bicyclists for speeding, not obeying traffic laws, and not having headlights on while riding your bike at night. So, these students know the cops in Davis and campus police don't mess around. They're certainly not going to let you camp out on campus for days or weeks! You can't even leave your bike locked up in the bike racks overnight on campus! LOL!!!!!!
