There is a huge difference between a sporting event and a gathering of this nature. They have to do there best to ensure order and safety. By them not allowing the tents, this helps to discourage others from partaking in the events. And reduces the over all stress of the crowd. The more people you get standing around the more likely shit will happen.
.
Kids sitting on the sidewalk is a public safety hazard for protests, but not sporting events..
That makes a lot of sense laugh out loud
The "Occupy" kids there weren't doing anything to bother other people, based on what I know (correct me if I'm wrong)... How is 50 kids quietly protesting more dangerous than a tent city of kids (most of whom were intoxicated) partying before a sporting event for weeks?

Did any "shit" actually happen from the protestors? I don't think so. It was the cops that were a threat to public safety.

Dude......I have friends and family who are cops. They had to get pepper sprayed as part of their training. Yes, it's very painful. But, it's certainly not a big deal as far as injury or health concerns. Also, I've treated patients who got pepper sprayed. It's not a serious eye injury!

You do know what's in pepper spray, right? It's just the active ingredient in peppers...capsaicin. It's like cutting peppers in your kitchen and accidentally touching your eyes.
Yes, I've been hit by pepper spray before.. I know what it is.
I'd rather get hit by a stick.

Just exactly why did the cops HAVE to spray them?
Why couldn't they just arrest them.
No one has given a good reason for this yet.

Then the kids should have been like "Oh shit I am allergic to that stuff. Seeing as I am being warned it will be used, I better move".
Umm.. maybe they've never been sprayed before and don't know how it will effect them?

That's like saying if a kid dies from a bee sting, he should've known better.

You're ridiculous. Getting hit by a stick can cause much more damage and serious injury. Even death! Pepper spray just really hurts until it's washed out. You get a little SPK in your eyes that can treat with artificial tears or lubricating eye drops.

So you remember one incident where someone went against a police officer. That's one person. This is 50 and that could have resulted in a disaster if they fought back. These officers had to think of the saftey of the onlookers also. They used the most efficient way to get these people to move like they were asked but chose to push them to another method.

How do you know they weren't going to fight back? They were already breaking the law and being defiant and they very well could have had weapons. This was a very large group of very immature college students.
No, it was one student out of hundreds that decided to fight, and he was quickly taken down.

Geez, you don't think 35 cops in riot gear couldn't defend themselves against 50 college kids, some of whom were girls?

"Most efficient method".. ie the laziest solution.

By the way, the campus at UC Davis will ticket bicyclists for speeding, not obeying traffic laws, and not having headlights on while riding your bike at night. So, these students know the cops in Davis and campus police don't mess around. They're certainly not going to let you camp out on campus for days or weeks! You can't even leave your bike locked up in the bike racks overnight on campus! LOL!!!!!!
Sounds like the police and administration are really full of themselves and abusing their authority. Glad I didn't go there.

What really angers me is how the cops and school officials are getting hammered by all the news reports. Basically, ppl are going to be fired for basically following police procedures. They asked the protesters to leave. Most did leave. But, the stubborn ones stayed despite all the warnings.

The copsa aren't going to hit you on the head with the stick at first.

Have you ever been sprayed with pepper spray, or just treated people that have?
Were the cops at UC handing out artificial tears aftter they unloaded on the kids? I doubt it.

Yes they tried to control the situation as to prevent people from getting out of hand. These kids were just trying to be martyrs. If they would have followed the law this issue would not have happened. But you are not going to sit there in a situation like this and let the kids keep breaking the law. As this would only escalate, until they got the reaction they were looking for. Just be glad they got their reaction now. Vs waiting till they were facing more serious concerns.

It is like kid throwing a temper tantrum. They will get worse and worse till they get what they want. The police have to reinforce the rules. This lets the kids know that it will not be tolerated. And in the end, it is better for all groups.

How is it abusing their authority? You do realize that Davis is a VERY "green" town and a lot of ppl bike around town. Bicyclists must obey the rules of the road like any car! So, they're just enforcing that.

If they didn't, traffic would be crazy in that town. Where I live now, bicyclists think they own the road. They don't follow the rules of the road. Now, if you multiply the number of bycyclists by 10 or more, it would be chaos on the roads!

Defend themselves? So if they all fight back then what? What if they have weapons then what? You have no way to know if these people were armed or not. None. What about innocent bystanders that were abiding by the law? What if they got shot because a physical riot started because the officers decided to arrest each person one by one and someone pulled out a gun?

They made a choice....period.

But, do you understand that when someone is wielding a stick and beating you with it, they can't control exactly where the hit is going to make contact. You'd be moving! So, it could accidentally hit your head. If that happens, you can certainly die!

However, in your mind, that's better than getting sprayed with pepper spray, right?!?!?!?Confused

And no, the cops wouldn't have the artificial tears immediately on hand. But, the kids could get treated after they're booked.

My point earlier was simply if this is a good way to handle misbehaving college kids, well fck, why not try it at the high school level, as well?
Oh what? that's different somehow?
My granpa was a professor at Davis for years and gave the school millions after he retired, and so i spent a lot of time there as a kid and i still live less than 50 miles from it. It is a progressive town with an ag-based college, and this kind of force is not appropriate at it. Maybe at other schools - not in this area. Davis camps police made a big mistake. period. Davis (the city) will not allow this. And they have say in this too.
