Is it still private property when these kids (or their parents) pay $15,000 a year for them to be allowed to go there?
I agree protesters who are not enrolled are blatantly breaking the law, and I personally have much less sympathy for them, so I wonder why didn't the school didn't simply kick the paying student offenders off the books and take away their units/credits?

First of all, UC Davis is public property. I don't know why you keep on calling it private. Therefore, your analogy of someone protesting in someone else's backyard is meaningless. It's really not that hard to break up the chain. Start at one end with a few cops and pull each person off one at a time. The student will release if enough force is pulled on him by the cops. Pain should only be inflicted if the situation is out of control. The cops have the upper hand here. They got guns, armor, riot gear and crap. If they are feeling afraid for themselves in this situation with a bunch of students protesting, then they shouldn't be cops in the first place.
Huh? The actual campus at a University of CA school is considered public property? Are you sure?

I know that the UC's get a lot of funding from the state. But, I never consider them as public, government properties.

Either way though, even if it was "public" property like a park, you wouldn't be able to camp out there. So, whether it's public or private, it's a moot point.

Tuition at a UC isn't $15k per year! It's only about $7k for the tuition itself. When I was going there, it was about $5k per year.....a long time ago.Big Grin

Of course you don't. You only see what you want to see.

Now I see why you would be proud of your kid for participating in such activity. Way to be Thumbup
Wow. nice armchair analysis.
Oh and speaking of armchairs, I simply meant I prefer my kid get an education and stay away from the trouble, BUT if they felt so strongly about an issue that they were willing to withstand this kind of pain, I silently may be a little proud. For doing something about it, instead of sitting in a comfy armchair behind a computer screen bickering about a situation that doesn't even involve them. I don't know for sure though, it would depend on how much he/she whined afterward lol...

DANG! It's gone up a lot in a very short period of time! It's higher than even UC Berkeley. And, I always thought that all the UC's were about the same as far as tuition and fees.

I can kind of understand why the UC Davis students (and other UC students) were so pissed off with the tuition hikes. I thought the current tuition at all UC's was about $7k-8k per year because UC Berkeley was that much. When I was going there in the late 90's, it was about $1500 per quarter only!

$13k is pretty expensive! That's close to what private university tuitions (like Santa Clara University) were back when I was in college.

"supposed to" according to what?

Linking arms and refusing to move, when verbally told to do so (and then even when police attempt to physically pull them apart) is called active resistance. Actively resisting arrest.

Passive resistance is like going limp. Pulling back, pulling away, running away is active resistance.

As far as enforcing the law, they certainly did that.
The protesters were on private property but in a public space and they were actively resisting arrest by linking arms but it remained a peaceful protest. According to California Penal Code section 835a [ca.gov] officers may use "reasonable force" in such a circumstance. There is legal precedence (Shouse Law Group, see Headwaters case) [shouselaw.com] that the use of pepper spray in somewhat similar circumstance is not reasonable.

Yeah, this sounds almost identical to the Davis incident:

"The officers then forced four protesters' heads back and applied pepper spray with a Q-tip to the corners of their closed eyes "

Same chemical, differing only in the method of application. They also used the spray.

edit: I think the reason they did that is because it was indoors.
