OK. I changed my mind. It seemed as though the police were MORE than patient with the douchebags blocking the sidewalk. I didn't realize (before VQ's link) that they were actually blocking the police from leaving...rather than simply sitting there protesting as I originally thought. However, I won't condemn the entire crowd and/or movement for the few idiots that always feel like they have to be the ones to show their ass and stand out in the crowd.

I've been gently arguing with a good friend who grew up during the late 60s and early 70s and remembers what he calls "real" protests (and yes I did accuse him of being a hipster) - he claims this was "well-orchestrated political theater designed to provoke a violent response" and that it went off perfectly. Apparently this country hasn't seen proper instigation in a couple of decades which explains why people my age & a little younger are kind of shocked at this behavior.

I guess back then people were pretty good at goading the cops? Dontknow I'll say this: pepper spray seems kinder than nightsticks or rubber bullets... Scratchchin

Anyway my buddy thinks there is never an excuse for a violent response to non-violent action & that's where I left it with him... I can just imagine the lawsuits if the cops had tried to shove through that line of kids sitting down, and accidentally bent a couple elbows the wrong way or broke an arm. I'm not sure how they were supposed to get the people they'd arrested out of there safely without breaking up at least the line of kids they pepper sprayed. In any case I'm a big fan of getting the whole story, not just the dramatic parts. laugh out loud
