Emergency cell phone ban!!!!!!!!

21,793 3,419 December 13, 2011 at 09:44 AM in News (3) USA TODAY
NTSB has called for a emgergency cell phone ban in cars everywhee. No use at all. I applaud this call. There are so many idiots on the road who can't drive and talk at the same time. The worst are the textings. What we need is the cops to actually enforce the law. These things are already illegal in CA but people still do it all the time.

Tell that to the 30+ states that have already passed laws that cover most of what the NTSB has called for. For something that just won't happen, it sure seems to be well on it's way. Oh, don't forget to tell them that they also made a mistake for making it a primary offense instead of a secondary one like you dictated.
So you never use your cell phone when driving? If you get a phone call or a text message you pull to the side of the road or highway to answer it? You also don't talk in the car, fiddle with the radio or GPS unit, read paper directions, or anything of the like, right?

It's still true in my state and states that aren't 90% wasteland.

How is this NTSB request enforceable? Will police pull over people for singing in the car? for talking to the passenger? for yelling at the kids in the nack seat?

How will it be enforced? Please explain.

Or let me: It will never happen.
Qualifying now I see. Hmm.... first you said it was secondary period. Now it's ah.... but... what.... in my state it is!! Yeah. That's what I meant.

i'm normally a libertarian and think most kiddie bans like secondhand smoke are idiotic, but i am a full believer that every person's ability to drive properly is at least somewhat hampered by talking on a cell phone, and considering the people around me are controlling a few thousand pounds of metal and plastic that can easily kill me instantly, i'm all for reducing the number of distractions in that process.

i'll admit that the level of distraction is different for everyone, but saying that you're just as competent of a driver with one hand holding your cell phone against your head flies in the face of logic: even if the actual act of talking takes zero attention (which itself can't be true), you still physically have only one hand on the wheel. you have significantly less control over large-degree turns of the steering wheel with one hand, and that's exactly what is involved in situations where you need the most control over the wheel. and since you have something in your hand (as opposed to just resting your hand on a gear shift), it must either be dropped or thrown before your other hand can be used for driving.

every study i've seen that has tried to measure the impact of using a phone while driving has concluded that there is an appreciable difference. even if you're superhuman (or a terrible conversationalist) and can talk while monitoring all your mirrors, tracking traffic around you, keeping a constant speed, and reacting quickly to all situations, you can't drive for more than a day without realizing you're sharing the road with people who can't do such a thing. i'll happily give up my "right" to talk on my phone while in the car to curb the practice by those who are terrible drivers anyway (AKA, 80%+ of people).

If I invoke Godwin's Law, will it get this moved to The Podium?

No I don't. Unlike some people who don't have the self control not to answer their phones. If my phone rings while I'm driving, I just let it ring. I'm not a slave to it. If it's important, they'll leave a message. If not, why bother picking it up? If I need to make a call, I pull over. I even shut off my engine before making a call as the law in my state demands.

I gave you Nevada. Even though most of America lives with a secondary law.

You still haven't backed up your argument that it's enforceable.

Good for you following the law.. Me, I'm still going to answer my phone as it's convenient to me. I'm also going to continue smoke and drive. And text and drive. And do all the other things that you seem to want to ban. Mainly because it's convenient to me and pisses you off.

It's called an analogy. Don't worry. You'll learn that world when you get out of kindergarten.

Wow. I'm honored that you would consider me before making even the most trivial decisions in your life. Personally, what you think doesn't even enter into mine.
