Toyota is STILL buying back Tacomas with rusty frames for 150% of RETAIL KBB value--very YMMV- (you must own a Toyota Tacoma)

If you havent heard about this and have owned a tacoma for a while you mightve been living under a rock- but Ive found 2 people in the past 3 months that didnt know about it so I am posting this as a PSA to Tacoma owners...

This is an old deal but I just cashed in on it so it is still live-- and is THE SINGLE BEST "DEAL" ive ever gotten---(if you can call it a deal) also obviously YMMV bc you need to have a registered insured 95-00 tacoma to cash in-- 01-04 tacomas were getting the entire frame replaced as well but Im pretty sure that is expired now...The truck is covered for 15 years from in service date so some 95-96 trucks will not qualify anymore due to the expiration of the warranty period..

I have clued other people into this deal that otherwise wouldnt have known about it so thats why Im posting it-- (one guy got $13000 for a truck that had 160k on it- the other had the frame replaced (worth about ten grand) on his 02 tacoma at toyotas expense)--- wouldnt you like to be handed a check for ten grand for a truck worth $2?

There is years worth of info on this if you want to learn more...

My story:
I bought a 2000 tacoma 5 years ago- paid 5k with 80k on truck-
Got recall/buyback notice 3 years ago when the program started--It passed...
Got another notice 6 months ago--
Finally got around to looking under truck last month-- Was able to shove my finger into holes in frame--
Took truck in- left same day with a rental---(paid for by toyota)
Today- Toyota handed me a check for $9200 for my truck with 123k on it...

I kinda wish this would extend out to the Tundras. Since their frames were from Dana as well.

I just bought an 05 tundra to replace the tacoma-- the frame does have a small amount of surface rust on it-- i have heard about the rear cross member being replaced by toyota at no charge due to rust- so they do recognize something of a problem...dont want a giant spare tire bouncing down the highway and killing someone!!

I have a 98 Tacoma that was signed over to me from a relative. I haven't checked the frame, but it is in otherwise good condition. Do you need to contact Toyota regarding the buyback, or is this something where they need to contact you first? Also, if I just took possession of the truck, is there any stipulation regarding the length of time that one one's the vehicle?

we were buying these up for while and selling them back to toyota. they were surprisingly easy to find, they all rusted out like that.

I actually had them repair a sludged up engine under warranty first them made them buy back on the rusted frame!!

Toyota really was pushing crap out there for a while, they deserve to be made to pay!

Not sure what exactly "signed over" means in your case but the truck needs to be registered and insured to qualify-- I would suggest using your relatives information and having the dealer look at it (if the title hasnt been filled in)-- Im not positive about length of ownership but I was the 2nd owner on my truck so the warranty does stay with the truck-- check the 3rd link in my post for tons of answers...

My truck looked immaculate bodywise-- but when you got underneath- that was a different story...

also, don't forget to have your toyota minivan spare tire cable checked out too. they were rusting out and causing the spare tire to fall off.

Don't know if Dana made the spare tire cable or not though.

I bought the car for a dollar. I should've been more clear. Thanks for the feedback. I've been reading your links, and already getting answers to some of my previously posted questions.

i've owned two with zero rust issues. really depends upon where you live. they'll also replace the frame - which if you want to keep the truck is an option.

Hahahaa....I actually had to check to make sure I hadn't posted what you posted.

I've got a 98 Tacoma that was "signed over" to me by a relative (my father-in-law passed away and willed the truck over to my wife).

We've been talking about selling the truck. I had no idea about this, so this is great.

I live in SoCal, though, so I'm going to doubt there's any rust issues. But you never know. I guess my only question is - do I just take it in to the dealership to have them check for the rust recall?

If so, I'll take it over there next week. If we can get more than book value for it, it'd be great. We don't really need it (it's our "3rd car"), and to not have to insure 3 cars would be great.

Toyota targeted the northeastern states for this so it's doubtable a California truck would qualify- unless they use salt on the roads in the winter!!
