Got a refund on a product I didnt return. what to do?

401 25 January 11, 2012 at 07:16 AM in Tech & Electronics (2)
Ill keep this short. I purchased a rather expensive product recently. I had some problems with my order but the vendor worked everything out and I have the product installed in my home.

I checked my email this morning and I have an email from them saying that they received my return and are processing a refund. I looked at my credit card statement and the refund has already processed.

I didnt return the product but I got a refund. So basically I got a free product. Im wondering what is the worst thing that could happen with this? Can they come back a month from now and say they've caught the mistake and charge me again? Confused

Moral police need not opine.

The analogy is getting something for free that is 100% the fault of the company. Wither it is a fraction of a cent or a thousand dollars it is still receiving goods for which you didn't pay.

Also it depends on who posts the original question Wink
Not always, most of us know better then to post this question. We just go about our day.nod

I get the morals issue. On something like this, I'd call since it's installed in my home. But if it was say a item they forgot to scan at BestBuy, I honestly can't say I'd be rushing back there.Dontknow I might, but probably not.
I take advantage of price mistakes hoping they go through. If there's a $25 of $25 coupon, I use it more then once. If there's a loophole, you bet your ass I'm on it. I think if you can compromise your morals on those things, then what makes this all of a sudden "stealing". Sorry I just don't agree with the comments posted here. Iagree with you there, but i like to think that those that can't be trusted with the small stuff can't be trusted with the big stuff. that's why i have turned around more than once to pay for the extra item they slipped in there or return it if i don't want it. however, the reality of the situation is it is more common for me to fly in to a parking space stomp in the fast food joint and throw the bag at them and start yelling "YOU GAVE ME THE WRONG DAMN ORDER!!!!" More often than not, they've given me the wrong thing....not something extra.
So you can honestly say, every time you went through a drive-thru and got something extra you went in and payed for it or gave it back to them? Rofl2 Sorry, I call BS.

You could leave a hundred dollar bill at my house and not one person would touch it. Even a $1, $5, $10, etc and you would get your money back no questions asked. But you can bet your ass I'm not turning around because I got an extra order of fries, and if they forgot my order of fries you can bet I AM going back to get it. How's that for hypocritical? Don't you just love morals? You can bend them when they fit you, and you can go to church on Sunday and repent and are forgiven..Whee

I haven't decided yet. I'm trying to gauge which is the more popular opinion and I'll take the other one.Whee

Also for me, it weighs heavy on the $ amount and the fact it's installed in my home.

In the case of Arbys, they won't take the food back because they can't re-sell it so it's either they let you have it for free ( = happy customer) or take it back, toss it in the trash, take a loss on the sale and have a slightly ticked customer.

I've had this happen at McDonald's - order a couple things off the $ menu, pay, get to pickup window and have a whole bag of stuff given to me. I did tell them it wasn't mine but since they had already given it to me they let me keep it.

I found a $10 bill at a Gymboree, right in front of the counter last week. The store was relatively busy but no-one other than us inside at the time. I picked it up, showed the clerk and she said "finders keepers".

Yes. Every time. But being a guy, i hardly ever check so I call them if i get home and notice. They always say not to worry about it so what's the problem with calling if it clears my conscience.

Here's an example. Last month I ordered 2 sets of tools from Sears for myself for xmas. They sent one tool in one box and one tool in another box. The problem was that they sent me two of the same tool. When I called them, they said they were out of stock on the other tool and to keep the duplicate tool they sent. Then they issued me a refund for the one that didn't come. Cool. Now I can regift the duplicate to my dad and not have to pay for a gift. Double cool. Then when i went to the dump, i opened the door to throw away the box the tool was shipped in and all the packing peanuts spilled out, but there at the bottom of the box was the second tool I ordered. Did I call them? You're damn right i did. I called them and told me that they shipped me 3 tools and I had only paid for one. Did they care? It was $5. They told me not to worry about it and didn't charge me.

tl;dr version:
bought 2 tools
they refunded me one and told me to keep the tool
found the other one and they told me to keep it without reversing the refund.

That's called moral relativism. laugh out loud

I'm not trying to say I'm a perfect human being, but I couldn't let something like what happened to the OP live on my conscious. I once ordered something from Amazon and had an issue with the delivery. Amazon refunded me in advance (as a courtesy) and told me that if it turned up I should contact them and they would recharge me. I did end up receiving the item and contacted Amazon, who then charged my card again. Due to the circumstances of the problem, I could have very well pretended that I never received the item and just kept the refund. I didn't feel right doing that, though.

But naturally, I feel people in general would be more forgiving a free $1 bag of fries versus a $900, let's say, TV.

They got sick of you constantly calling and just wanted you off the phone. Plus the shipping was more than the item.

I have no doubt you're right, but if I use that to justify not doing the right thing how far will I go? Eventually I'll be posting a thread in the lounge like this one. it has to start somewhere.

At an average of $15 an hour i think you should send the company at least $30 to cover the time cost of them having to employ someone to handle your repeated calling. Then and only then will everything be right with the world.

That's the line I use on the phone with Verizon when they screw up my bill.....except I bill myself out at $40 an hour. laugh out loud

But seriously, the difference there is they aren't providing the service but are still charging me.

Oh and FYI.....the salaries to pay those people is already built in to the price of the product you purchase.
