Got a refund on a product I didnt return. what to do?

401 25 January 11, 2012 at 07:16 AM in Tech & Electronics (2)
Ill keep this short. I purchased a rather expensive product recently. I had some problems with my order but the vendor worked everything out and I have the product installed in my home.

I checked my email this morning and I have an email from them saying that they received my return and are processing a refund. I looked at my credit card statement and the refund has already processed.

I didnt return the product but I got a refund. So basically I got a free product. Im wondering what is the worst thing that could happen with this? Can they come back a month from now and say they've caught the mistake and charge me again? Confused

Moral police need not opine.

Yes. Every time. But being a guy, i hardly ever check so I call them if i get home and notice. They always say not to worry about it so what's the problem with calling if it clears my conscience.

Here's an example. Last month I ordered 2 sets of tools from Sears for myself for xmas. They sent one tool in one box and one tool in another box. The problem was that they sent me two of the same tool. When I called them, they said they were out of stock on the other tool and to keep the duplicate tool they sent. Then they issued me a refund for the one that didn't come. Cool. Now I can regift the duplicate to my dad and not have to pay for a gift. Double cool. Then when i went to the dump, i opened the door to throw away the box the tool was shipped in and all the packing peanuts spilled out, but there at the bottom of the box was the second tool I ordered. Did I call them? You're damn right i did. I called them and told me that they shipped me 3 tools and I had only paid for one. Did they care? It was $5. They told me not to worry about it and didn't charge me.

tl;dr version:
bought 2 tools
they refunded me one and told me to keep the tool
found the other one and they told me to keep it without reversing the refund.
You are the man - you did the right thing. It seems like I am always getting undercharged at local autoparts stores and even the grocery store, and I have to speak up.

It sounds like you and I would be good friends IRL [nohomo]

Some appliance place tried to deliver a stove to us a few weeks ago... yeah, a new stove would be nice, but we informed them they must have the wrong address.
the difference is in my case I PAID FOR and received the item. this wasnt random. the random part was a month later looking at my credit card and seeing a negative balance because of a refund that I didn't request.

I actually started the thread to see if anybody had a similar experience and could comment on the outcome.

Last month a camera place sent me some other guy's order. His camera cost twice as much as mine.
I had some people telling me I should just sell it and buy the camera I ordered, and pocket the difference.

but if UPS delivered a bigscreen tv to your address that you didnt order would you keep it.Wink
Nope, I actually know my UPS driver on a personal level and consider him a friend. BUT if it had my address on it, I wouldn't hesitate to ask him what I should do. If he said keep it, it doesn't affect him then I might.laugh out loud
Now if it didn't have my address, thats' different since he'd get in trouble for delivering it to the wrong address. It would be on UPS not the company.nod

See it all depends on the circumstances behind it.Wink

Yeah, my name/address on the shipping label, dude's name on the packing slip.
They were both cameras from the same manufacturer, just very, very different models.

Now, see if it had his name on the packing slip I couldn't keep it, since there's a name it personalizes it to me.LMAO

Like I mentioned before, it's all grey areas to me.

Edit: the more I think about it, who am I kidding...It's just a name and he'll still get his. I probably would keep it since it's the same brand.Scratchhead I'd honestly have to be in the situation to decide what I'd do 100%.

Well OP is a douch-a-crit. He asks a moral question asking for opinions and then doesn't want to know our response if we live by a code of um...i don't know....uh morals. And then he espouses to be a fan of team whose head coach travels from church to church throughout the year (even during regular season) espousing his Christian beliefs and giving his testimony which I'm pretty sure involves holding some sort of moral certitude. So that eliminates the possibility of him being a fan of the team for its coaching staff. The only conclusion is that he is a fan of the team for obvious reasons [bleacherreport.com]....all of which seem to involve having a lack of morals.

Well said, Colonel PIITB. Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)

OP didn't ask for opinions on right from wrong, but just what the worst that could happen was as far as being billed later for the item. If he wanted to know if he would go to Hell, I'm sure he would have asked. And I'm sure the Moral Majority would have chimed in their agreement with you.

Oh, sorry, I see they already did.

Sometimes I'm surprised and more than a little disappointed in you, Chewy. Maybe you've been in the Lounge too long and something's rubbed off on you.
