Update on post 115. Have you ever had a potential employer verify your current income?

26,586 3,338 February 8, 2012 at 07:25 AM in Question
I am in the middle of a potential job change. Today is interview #2. This is a technical interview. Yesterday, they sent me the link to fill out their application. They asked what my current "verifiable compensation" is. Why is that any of their business? I only see that as a possible negotiating tool for them. If I put my current salary, it could cost me $5k-$10k in salary for this new potential job. But, if I exaggerate it and they find out, it could cost me the job. The guy I know who is recommending me for this position (and who is also doing the technical interview today) told me to exaggerate it. So, I did. Have you lied about your current income? Anyone ever had a potential employer actually ask for verification?

I had the final interview yesterday. 1 hour with the director and 1 with the GM. They both asked a lot of the same questions. Both asked my current salary. I didn't like that. The good thing is that even with my exaggerated current income, she said I was underpaid. LOL!
Obviously you have the offer now...but you think they are going to ask your salary in an interview in which they DO NOT expect to hire you already? Smilie

There's no way for your employer to verify it.
Your former employer can only legally tell them what your title was and the dates you worked there.
Of course this is an exercise in intimidation to reduce your negotiation position.
I always fill in my "current salary" as what I want.. Then you can just ask them to "match" what you are making now.

I've never been caught.. Although maybe now, I am busted. laugh out loud

If they ask for old check stubs or whatever, I would decline unless I was unemployeed.
I would not want to work for an employer that would be such a jerk before I even started.

No. That actually was help with my current job.

The new job is a 50% pay bump. But, requires 30% or so travel. Although, only Sun-Fri. No weekends away.

It was a good thing because it gave me a good idea what they would offer if they chose me.

That's how you are rewarded in corporate America with staying with a company for so many years. I am in my 10th year here. Outside candidates get what the market pays. Internal candidates get the bottom dollar for that pay level.

Yep, I agree. They will pay someone outside the company competively.
The long time employees, they gamble that most of them will stay for little or no annual raises.
Good for you man. Glad you got a nice bump in salary.
Way to stick it to the MAN laugh out loud

Haha, I am saying...getting someone to offer you what you are worth is not a good reason to be happy about currently getting screwed!!! nod

I really liked my job with travel because it made vacations SUPER cheap with all the miles coming your way.

Yeah. The job pays a travel bonus of $50 per day and I get to keep all the miles that I accrue.

Update: I put my 2 week notice in yesterday. That was one of the most stressful things I have ever done. I've been here 10 years. It's the only company I have ever worked for in my professional career. My Lead made it much easier on me and was very supportive. He then called our Director in who was much quieter, although very professional about it. Phew. Glad that's over. I'm also happy they didn't walk me out of the building. They sometimes do that when people have "keys to the kingdom" like I do. It's definitely a show of respect. I start at my new job on the 29th.

After 10 years it should be less stressful I would think because you've known everyone so long and you all feel like it's time to move on. In fact if I was your boss or anyone's boss I would raise a few eyebrows if you weren't looking around after 10 years. IMO, you should always be looking for a new job, not necessarily applying, although we all get lazy. The last thing you ever want to do is become one of those guys that sticks around for 30 years because more often than not those are the guys that have become obsolete and stick around only because they either have no confidence or can't actually get a better position anywhere else.
