In my opinion, he would have made the same point just as effectively if he repurposed her old computer or donated it to a needy family that was more appreciative. Then post that on Facebook and make her feel like the brat she is.
Dad does mention she's done something like this before, so what else has the kid done? She's rebellious so maybe there's more than what he lets on in the video (maybe things he's ashamed of admitting she's done). We don't know the whole story of the family so it's not our place to judge. I would say Dad was warranted in his actions. He basically reacted in kind, she made a fool of him and his wife on a social media site he made a fool of her on a social media site, then took it one step further. Fight fire with fire and add some gasoline.
Oh, and I really don't think 14 year olds need their own laptop. When I was 14, and granted the world has changed since then, we had one family computer in a public area that we used for homework, and after our homework was done we could play some games or go online if no one else needed the computer. I didn't get my own laptop until I was 17 and we didn't have wifi in our house, so I didn't actually use it for more than Word and iTunes until I went to college. I get that people use the internet for more and more now, but I guess I still think a 14 year old should be too busy with school, extracurriculars, work, and a social life to be spending much time online.

You forgot the part about her not being allowed online and was already in trouble for something she posted about on Facebook.
well she was allowed online, but was previously in trouble for something similar.

Mature people look at a problem and try to devise reasonable solutions that have a chance of actually working.
Immature people look at a problem and react emotionally, lashing out at whatever is within reach, often with destructive effects, and never in a way that actually solves the problem.
Now, does anyone...anyone...actually think that this dad's "strategy" is going to work--that she will learn to appreciate what she has and be respectful towards her parents? Does anyone seriously believe that his emotional overreaction will not provoke an escalation from his daughter?
At least the daughter has an excuse for acting like a twit--she's 15. What's dad's excuse?
I agree that kids should be respectful and that this girl should have been punished for her actions.
I also agree that a parent needs to follow through with with what they say.
This father telling his child he would shoot the computer if she did what she did again is where it went wrong. Who says that that to their child?? That in itself is very strange.
The video of the father is embarrassing. He acts like a total blowhard showing the world his big bad gun shooting a laptop. He makes himself look like some backwoods ding dong. All he was missing was a can of cheap beer. Who does stuff like this? His actions here are also very strange.
Then he posts it for the world to see. Because his daughter posted nasty things about her parents on facebook (a child) that was public for everyone to see. So....what lesson did he teach her? Tit for tat. By making this video public he taught her nothing. They both did the same thing. He also went public and complained about his kid. Not very intellectual. Again I ask, who the hell would do that?
I think the worst part here is what he is teaching/not teaching her about guns. This is not what they are meant for and he is setting a very bad example and a potential danger for his daughter. I'm in no way a perfect parent but I WOULD NEVER involve my firearm in any discipline ever. He is irresponsible to the extreme in this respect. This guy has some issues that to me are pretty scarey.
Now back to the daughter. What she did was totally wrong. There are several avenues the parents could have taken to punish her effectively and responsibly. That's one of the jobs of a parent. To teach them right from wrong. It's not an easy job but it can be done without acting like a idiotic maniac.
A mother and a father are their child's 1st role model.
A life in porn maybe? heck or she will be sluttin it up soon enough....
She is going to be every boys easy hookup..
Nice going dad, you ruined you girl life... but you made here prime for some easy hookups for future me
Thanks dad

I don't think all this publicity will be good for his daughter. He probably didn't think it was going to go viral but family issues like this should be kept within the family.
