Another theory on obesity

There are many theories on the causes of obesity. Some say too much fat, too many calories. Ironically, many of the modern diets have generally failed to fix the problem.

The above video is long. For people who will reply with tl;dr here is the synopsis:

Watch it if you get a chance. I really enjoyed it and found it both eye opening and informative, without needing some shock factor or sex to sell it. It follows a simple premise and makes a lot of sense.

I didn't shackle it to dodgeball. I used dodgeball as a sports equivalent.

In reality, the Atkins diet is bad. I don't know where this guy stands on the subject though laugh out loud
Why would you say bad? It has very little sugar.

You either didn't read my posts or you're trying to get me going again Facepalm

vec cliff's notes: Sugar isn't the problem. It could be a problem if there is no physical activity.

Max cliff's notes: Sugar isn't the problem. It could be a problem if there is no fiber.

I don't have a problem with sugar. As a matter of fact, I love sugar laugh out loud

I definitely have a problem with the Atkins diet because it eliminates carbohydrates. This is the diet for people that are:
  1. Too lazy to exercise
  2. Not committed enough to eliminate fats instead of carbs
  3. Combination of 1 & 2

The reason Atkins is "bad" is because it sends your body into ketosis...which basically means your body is in starvation mode. It starts going after the fat because there are almost no glucose bodies that your brain can use for food (brain runs on glucose). Glucose comes from sucrose, a disaccharide (or table sugar=one fructose and one glucose), which your body easily breaks down. Otherwise it will conver fructose or it will get it from breaking down polysaccharides like starch.

When there is no available glucose, your body changes fats into ketone bodies, which your brain can use for energy but it isn't as nice. The two main problems with this diet are that you will easily gain the weight back if you start eating carbs/sugars because you're body will be like OMG ...WTF there's food now!!!! Store as much of it as farking possible (which stored surgar becomes fat) so incase this starvation thing happens again, we'll be ok!!! Therefore you gain the weight back.

The other thing is, is that most people don't watch what they eat other than no carbs...so they put bad fats and sterols into their body which end up lining cells and your vascular system which makes your heart work harder and if you ever fall off the diet then you suddenly gain weight and a bad vascular system. Basically...heart attack mode.

There are ways in which you can do this diet properly but it takes a lot of work that people aren't wanting to invest the time into.

Cupcake- I don't diet. I eat a healthy, balanced diet. I sometimes indulge in sweets. I don't over eat, and I exercise every day. I also don't drink soft drinks. I may have one every couple of months.

The word diet drives me bonkers. It makes me want to eat like a cow.

I was just trying the diet my boss lost weight on. Around 10 years ago I lost 110 pounds on 1200 calories a day and it only took me 10 month to do it. I had a foot injury that made it so I can't run or walk. I put on 30 pounds and I have to take it off. (part of the weight gain was due to the drugs I'm on) I will get back to running as soon as my foot gets better. (not lazy).

So you do diet...this is one of my biggest problems with the "dieting world." What you eat is your DIET (short for dietary intake basically). If you're setting up something special in the way you eat, then you're on a Special Diet.

That's right. I just don't like diets if that makes sense.

I'm was not calling you lazy. I apologize if you took it that way. I was commenting on the diet in general.

You don't have to run or walk (if that is still a problem). Anaerobic exercises burn the calories as well and it has a lasting effect because the muscles will continue to burn calories as fuel in between workouts.

At least in the food science area. I have a degree in chemistry and I work in food science (specifically sugar substitutes), father is a PhD food scientist and mother is a Registered Dietician. I kinda know food Wink

But I don't know much about computers or eletronics...

I understand what you mean. My biggest problem with special diets that are sold all over is that people don't actually study what those diets are doing inside their body.

Even people who aren't trying to lose weight, instead trying to build muscle, like boxers, over do the protein in their diet because someone told them that a high protein diet will help you build muscle. Then they decide they'll fill their diet with protein shakes and substitutes and end up screwing up their collon.

I just want people to really understand the science behind what they do with their bodies. That doesn't mean everyone needs to be an organic chemist, they just need to know the basics of how things are broken down in the body and what for.
