I'm trying to keep from judging people.

I'm a optician and we take Medicaid for glasses. I see a lot of people who come in with 4 or more kids. What upsets me is often the kids have different last names. (like 3 or more different last names) Most of the moms are really young. I just feel sad that its the kids who will suffer in most cases. Never enough money, not knowing their fathers, lack of stability in their life's.

I do have limited conversations with the moms. They often tell me they have no extra money to spend on anything other then what Medicaid will pay. Due to the father or fathers lack of support.

Just venting. Had a young mom with 5 kids yesterday and 4 had different fathers. She broke down and cried when her kids had to wear the frames that Medicaid would pay for. (kinda ugly frames IMO). Her oldest child was trying to comfort her.

My heart was broken. If I had money to spare, I would have purchased the frames for the kids myself. Frown

Wow, honest mistake. Sorry about that Frown

Anyways, I'll shut up now before I get this thread kicked into the podium. But, Medicare is a pretty slick deal if you're a recipient --- not so much if you're a taxpayer or medical care provider though.

There are people truly in hardship that need a hand up. There are others who think that the money they earn is their "play" money per say and the government guarantees basic needs like housing, food, healthcare, etc.

I'm sorry, it was an honest mistake.

I thought you once said that your husband was in the AF and that you were Filipino. Did I get any of that right? The reason I say that is that Clark didn't close that long ago and a lot of people in the AF found wives there.

Walmart corporate has a limited choice of Medicaid frames to choose from, each individual store has no choice.

I don't know how Medicaid works in other states. But in CA, each office that is a provider for Medicaid patients supplies their own ophthalmic eyeglass frames. The office can provide any frames at any value they want. However, Medicaid only reimburses the office about $19 for the frame. So, the quality of the frame isn't going to be great....usually frames that wholesale for $10 or less, which is on the bottom of the totem pole as far as eyeglass frames go.

Regarding purchasing eyeglasses from those super cheap online eyeglass places, I have to say this again. I know it falls on deaf ears. But, considering ppl's complaint about outsourcing American jobs to other countries and all, I have to remind ppl that the reason why these online sites are so cheap is because they are located outside the country. Usually, they're in small third world countries with no standards for lenses or frames (ANSI standards in the U.S.). The materials will cost those optical pennies. Whereas, opticals in the U.S. have to pay higher wholesale prices for lenses, tools/machinery to surface the lenses, and labor.

I know everyone here on SD wants the best deal possible. I totally get it and am guilty of it myself. But, for some things, I prefer to go local with a B&M shop to promote local businesses. This is why China has become such a superpower. They can undercut almost any country out there in labor and manufacturing costs since their citizens are willing to work for pennies per day.
