Why do you have to switch workplaces to get higher raises?

It seems so stupid. My current job wants to give me a 2% raise.... on 51k because I'm an "admin" - while others who get paid more then me and have the whole summer off get 3%
Friends are telling me the only way to get more is to switch workplaces. Problem is I really like the job, they just need to pay me!!

OP, nobody is stopping you from quitting and going somewhere else. Take some responsibility for your life and quit your bitching. I hope I'm not the first one to tell you that YOU are part of the problem.
I know you do.
Also seems you get more vacation time than the average person.
This is assuming that you have been honest in this thread. You might be related to slutsky.
No one is going to pat you on the head and say poor j3ff your are treated so unfairly and injustly. You deserve so much more than this.

Again, this has nothing to do with any other workplace. You can't compare your corp. policies to mine.

I believe what he was doing was contrasting the differences -- not comparing them. It's no wonder our country is in the shape it is when we've got good folks like yourself in the education system.

As long as you work off of your current baseline you will NEVER get to were you want to be. Not ever. Not ever ever ever ever....
An extra $10/week will not get you there, you need to sit down and discuss your target and get everyone to agree if it's possible, and if it is, what will it take to get there. Asking for percentage based raises is an employers game and an employees enemy.... unless you are at least close to where you think you should be.
for example, if you think you should be at 75k in 5 years, 2 or 3 % even 5% will not even get you close - but if your employer agrees that you should be worth that, you can agree that $5k/yr raises are your goal ... if you don't do this now - you will waist 5 years of your life learning the hard way.

This poor sap just happens to work for the government and is faced with the same reality the rest of us are. I was a teacher, and it absolutely sucked. So I quit and went elsewhere.

I love my job....it's just the 15 hour days, every day, for the last 3 weeks that's frustrating.
Oh, and, OP......I'm not getting over time.
