Why do you have to switch workplaces to get higher raises?

4,841 1,079 March 14, 2012 at 03:33 PM in Computers (4)
It seems so stupid. My current job wants to give me a 2% raise.... on 51k because I'm an "admin" - while others who get paid more then me and have the whole summer off get 3%

Friends are telling me the only way to get more is to switch workplaces. Problem is I really like the job, they just need to pay me!!

Because assuming that administrator means = 100k+ and therefore you are the 2% group is wrong and bullshit.

OP, nobody is stopping you from quitting and going somewhere else. Take some responsibility for your life and quit your bitching. I hope I'm not the first one to tell you that YOU are part of the problem.

Hardly i told you that, as well as did most of the people answering you in this thread. How many people get a half day on Friday most people work a full week so whining that you have to be in work at 7.30 (doesnt mean your actually working when most people are in at 8.30am doesnt seem such a big deal right. Since your finishing 5-6 hrs earlier than the average person on Fridays.

Also seems you get more vacation time than the average person.

This is assuming that you have been honest in this thread. You might be related to slutsky.

No one is going to pat you on the head and say poor j3ff your are treated so unfairly and injustly. You deserve so much more than this.

My problem has nothing to do with ANYONE else's job or where they work. It has to do with the people at MY job. The reason the teachers get 3% is because they are not as highly paid as the "administrators" except, wait, there's a small minority of administrators who are paid less then teachers and I'm one of them.....

Again, this has nothing to do with any other workplace. You can't compare your corp. policies to mine.

I believe what he was doing was contrasting the differences -- not comparing them. It's no wonder our country is in the shape it is when we've got good folks like yourself in the education system. laugh out loud

It sounds like you're caught in "the trap" ... the reason jumping to another job will yield you more is because you're not going off of current wage - you're looking at "market". You need to convince your current employer that they need to look at your market value - not base your wage of an irrelevant number (ie. your current wage). What would it cost them to replace you?

As long as you work off of your current baseline you will NEVER get to were you want to be. Not ever. Not ever ever ever ever....

An extra $10/week will not get you there, you need to sit down and discuss your target and get everyone to agree if it's possible, and if it is, what will it take to get there. Asking for percentage based raises is an employers game and an employees enemy.... unless you are at least close to where you think you should be.

for example, if you think you should be at 75k in 5 years, 2 or 3 % even 5% will not even get you close - but if your employer agrees that you should be worth that, you can agree that $5k/yr raises are your goal ... if you don't do this now - you will waist 5 years of your life learning the hard way.

So you are saying that at your work there are some administrators that put in the same number of hours as you, have been there exactly the same length of time, have the same cumulative experiences, are equally as productive, went to your same school getting the same gpa that get more than you and are as hostile and confrontational as you in the work environment thatget more than you for a total of $500 more a year . Then thats awful and you should spend all your time venting on a deals website about this.

How often do I bitch about anything other than the government? Dontknow

This poor sap just happens to work for the government and is faced with the same reality the rest of us are. I was a teacher, and it absolutely sucked. So I quit and went elsewhere.

I love my job....it's just the 15 hour days, every day, for the last 3 weeks that's frustrating.

Oh, and, OP......I'm not getting over time.
