Why do you have to switch workplaces to get higher raises?

It seems so stupid. My current job wants to give me a 2% raise.... on 51k because I'm an "admin" - while others who get paid more then me and have the whole summer off get 3%

Friends are telling me the only way to get more is to switch workplaces. Problem is I really like the job, they just need to pay me!!

LOL has a single person empathised with the poor misunderstood, unappreciated, secretary who works a half day on friday and gets 2 months vacation a year goverment employee.

Not my job.....my bosses. When I was under my previous supervisor and boss I had to beg for work, and then they would tell me they would get back to me. My new bosses rock. I ask for work; I get work. I ask for responsibilities; I get responsibilities. I ask to work from home; I get to work from home.

I don't like not working. If you're going to pay me, then I want to know I've earned it.

I understand that. I like to be challenged as well. Glad you like the new bosses. I guess all the venting was from before so it makes more sense!

With 6 pages of on topic im suprised it stayed this long considering no OT wasnt added.

I guess it was because ALVS is still disposing of Nagins body.

This area is pretty swampy. Bodies dissolve very quickly in this environment.

I'm with you on this one. I just changed companies 3 weeks ago after 10 years at that company. As an admin, I was underpaid (when compared to the market) by about $13k. They should better reward loyalty. But, they don't. I left for a job that paid $28k more. So, no regrets here. But, it is nerve-racking leaving behind all that tenure.

So, because they didn't want to pay me anything close to market rate, they now are hiring from outside the company and will be forced to pay him/her much more than I would have asked for. In addition, they have to pay recruiting fees. This all makes perfect sense! Or not.

Companies want/expect loyalty, it's just not in their best interest to actually reward it nod. It's also a one-way street, don't expect any loyalty from a company (or at least the majority of them)
