ON TOP of the phone itself ? I don't think so.
What is it? Social status? My friend has one so I NEED one?
I'll take my dumb phone and laptop any day.

I think you're just so intent on going against the grain (even though it's illogical, cumbersome, less convenient, and provides no actual benefit to you) so you can delude yourself into feeling "unique" and "special."
In fact, you're so hellbent on going against anything with any sort of mass popularity so you can be "different" that you actually make yourself believe that the crap you have is somehow "better." And the funniest part about that is that it makes you so angry, you have to lash out at anyone that uses the devices that you hate so much. Which in turn makes you look like a complete idiot to everyone else because of your gigantic delusions, and then you become a social pariah. Well... bravo, buddy. You certainly set yourself apart from the crowd.

The 1400 minute family plan is $90/mth ($90 x 12 = $1080). If we just get the 3GB plan, that's $60/yr for 2 people ($60 x 12 = $720). That's $1800/yr without tacking on all the stupid fees that carriers charge every month.
Note from my previous post that although $1800 isn't worth it for me, I could care less how other people spend their money. We all have our own wants/needs.

Google maps vs. Garmin my .02
Today I used google maps from my incredible to go to a store that i've been to before . Google had me get off at exit 9 as opposed to exit 10, exit 9 brought me through the center of town, approx 6 mins from the store. Garmin tells me to use exit 10 which is alot closer, store is less than 1 min from exit. Google seems to be more update on searches and locations because Garmin tells me that store in on left side of street but really is on right. The other day Google sent me down a dirt road, around a pond and through a cranberry bog even though a paved road was nearby, dirt road was more direct, definatly not easier. I guess Google from phone is good in a pinch but if I'm going away on a trip i'll definatly be bringing my trusty Garmin.
Google Maps:
- Constantly being updated with no need to download new updates
- Street View
- Power of Google that can search for whatever business you're looking for in your area or where you will be that doesn't need to be in the default POIs of your little garmin.
- A small purchase can give you voice turn by turn directions
- Built into a device you already own, no need to have a second device just for directions.
- Offers traffic at no add'l cost
- Can be used whether in a car, on a bike, walking around the city
- Offers directions via Public Transportation
Garmin:
- Needs to be manually updated
- Limited POIs
- Traffic service costs extra
- No Google Street View
- Additional Device to purchase and mount in your car
- Can't be used while walking around a city, only real use is in a car
- Doesn't give information on public transportation
Yeah, you're right. Your garmin is so much better than google maps.

If you pay $1200 a year in addition to your regular phone service, JUST for the data portion, I'm gonna quote frogstar and say you're a schmuck.

He complains about the weight/size of a smartphone, but apparently carrying a regular phone AND a GPS unit, well that's not cumbersome at all!
