RETIRED Marlboro Outwit the West Funny Farm

228 92 October 16, 2010 at 01:35 PM
Hi all,

I started this thread for anyone who wants to come here for lite discussion, jokes, and just general discussion and fun.

Everyone is welcome!

I was thinking that maybe it would be helpful to keep the original thread to a bit more of a serious discussion of the clues and answers.

This would make the original thread more useful to those seeking serious information and clues without having to read through hundreds of extraneous messages.

So, I hope it catches on !

So pop a beer and pull up a chair and relax !

Some parts of it are so think around like a tree trunk and it is shaped the exact same as the trellace. If he builds the new one almost exact and if I just cut off some of the young shoots I may be able to save some of most of it. It all may fall down and break. With him going back and forth to his mother's and now he has been working until nearly 8pm daily when he is home it is so hard to get anything finished. He has 3/4 of a back deck built so he has to finish that first. the grass weekly and so many little spring-type yearly things (weed killer, I am allergic) spray for mosquitoes, on and on. Hope it holds up for a while, at least part of the summer.

cwhetme and bornblondeey, I've been "gardening" more this year too. The difference is that I only have 15' x 30' in the back to "play" with because I live in a condo. I extended the flower bed on the one side to reach the clematis vine on the other. Originally because my Uncle gave me an azalea for Easter and I decided to put it in the back. The beds are edged in stone, so I still need to buy a few more to finish the 2nd row (thought it was better to have at least one row to enclose the bed.) Instead of planting my tomato/cucumbers in with the flowers, I put them in the new area with some sweet peppers. Someone suggested putting the cucumbers up a trellis, so I'll try that with one and see how well that works. The others can stay on the ground.
I envy you both for having more yard, but at the same time, I'm glad I don't have the work.

Good Luck to all!
Won a Hasbro Deluxe Battleship game from the Nabisco contest this morning:
http://brands.nabisco.com/seeksna...microsite/
You're allowed to win one prize in each catagory, I won the movie tickets a while ago-they have to be printed by Sept 30 and are good through 12/31/2012. I'm not certain if they have to be used on Battleship-they are Hollywood Movie money. The other prizes are a K'nex Battleship and a $5 coupon for any Nabisco product.

3 years ago, I bought one strawberry plant (with 3 in the single tub-have to slickdeal here). I always try to buy plants with multiples, then I soak them in a bucket and gently pull them apart. I put one in each of the 3 flower beds. This year, I have more than 20 plants and have had strawberries for breakfast for the last 4 days!!
You seem to have a lot in a small area. Good work. I put tomatoes in containers last year. I would love to grow strawberries, but even with all the land, mostly grass and stones, all my "gardens" which are individual areas surrounded by slate and so full that I cannot get through the roots of everything in them to plant anything new. I used to get a few geraniums every year for color but I cannot get thru deep enuf to even plant them. and little pots dry out with this sun almost immediately.

The furniture prize I won from homefurnishings.com is turning out rather odd. When the fellow called Tuesday he said the retailer I picked on my entry "has chosen not to participate" - the rules state ...awarded in the form of a credit at the participating HomeFurnishings.com furniture retailer of winner's choice. I gave him a new choice but now he wants me to pick three retailers and they will "contact them in order to secure their agreement to fulfill the prize". The problem is that the options are rather thin with most of the remaining stores selling goods of questionable quality. Doesn't sound like winners choice to me. I really don't want to to decline the prize but may have to end up doing so. Kinda stinks.
Boy, that's too bad. It sure seemed like a terrific win. $5000 should get you some very nice, high quality furniture.

It's a thought, and I thought about it as well, but that's just way too much trouble. Guess I could take advance orders for $599 sofas and $199 recliners LOL shake head -- No, too much trouble.

I have just spent the past two hours scouring homefurnishings.com for every one of their retailers (and each store web site, and BBB ratings) within a hundred miles and have come up with exactly two additional stores that sell furniture that would be acceptable. So that gets me to the three options they've requested.
Perhaps I'm being a bit selective but really only want good quality, even if it's free.
I'll be curious to know what you decide to do.

That's pretty cool. Congrats on the BIG win!

I have those tomato cylinder-type trellaces that I put into the buckets last year. I bet they would work with the cucumbers in a bucket. Maybe even with strawberries. Do strawberries come back every year? I got colored trellaces and they are pretty so they look nice. I line the cement area by the back door with the buckets so I can hand-water daily with the hose before the lawn gets watered. I really need a sprinker system as the sprinkler has to be moved about 10-12 times to get it all and it takes a long time probably 4 times a week and an all day job moving it. If i go out i have to shut it and then put it on again when i come home.

Sometimes smaller stores with inferior quality items have catalogs with better more expensive stuff. If they agree to the amount of your prize, then maybe you can find something nicer in their books. Is he giving you a list of retailers to choose from or can you go out of your area? I hope you find a way to do this.

Strawberries do come back each year and they multiply nicely by sending out "runners", which turn into new little plants.

About time!!!!

Dear Cindy,
Do you like surprises? There is a pair of Smirnoff shot glasses or a high ball glass on its way to your door.
I got that too. Have to be careful what I wish for. I had said earlier I just want a small win and I got it. Wonder which we will get. Did Goldie get hers yet? She won a few weeks ago and I forget if she said she got it or not.
I am always afraid that I do not enter properly and sometimes I do not. When it is late (early in the morning like 4am) i make a lot of mistakes. A winning email just lets me know I am getting my entries thru correctly.
I got my jerky from the Stadium in reg. mail and the jar of H20 Plus face cream for fine lines came UPS that I just won a few days ago.

Ya know, the talk about tomato plants brought back some memories.. This is another tom plant, planted in the same place at my parents place but a few years before the other pic I posted. My Mom didn't like her pic taken so out of respect I cropped her off the pic. I really don't need tips on growing veggiesshake headshake head
Was that in the ground or a bucket. I see something white under the plant. Really nice.

Strawberries are interesting. They send out new starts that sort of "walk" to a new spot. Every few weeks in the late spring and all summer, I find a new start trying to go somewhere it doesn't belong.. I either leave it attached to the "parent" and dig up the ground a little, water it, then put the new one where I want it to go or I cut it off from the "parent" and put it in another bed. I have quite a few iris' (my favorite flower) and the strawberries "reach" around them. There is columbine, dianthis, a tall fall blooming purple flower that I can't remember the name of now, daylillies, hollyhock, and bulbs that come up through it all-squill, mini and varietal daffodils, tulips, resurrection lillies, all in the one side garden that is now extended.
I suspect that the iris bed next to the vegetables will expand this summer and I KNOW that the strawberries will wander over. There are 2 other beds, but they get more shade.
If you have ANY space between those plants, the strawberries will find a way. They don't take up much room. Now if they had more space around them, the berries would be bigger, but this works for me and they produced into October last year.

Sorry to ramble Wink, but I do enjoy my little patch of ground.
Rocks are good for crocus' in the late winter/early spring, do you have them naturalized in or between your gardens? There are the small early ones, the larger ones that follow and then fall bloomers. Just a thought.

Saw this and wondered if it would work!!! We need to find something to keep mighty do Mikey off the wall between our yard and the restaurant next door. 2 foot tall dog can scale a 6 foot block wall!!!!! Gets up there and barks at the people going to eat!! Doesnt help that the owners like him and feed him pizza!!!!

This ones heads spins!!!! That should scare anything!!! nod

When the 2 dogs next door are down my 3 and those 2 create a barking fest. I have this antique horn (it goes around in circles twice) and a rubber thing that you squeeze like the old bike horns and it is loud. they all hate it so I do not like to do it much. Now I just hold it in my hand and say loudly "honk" and they all stop immediately as they do not want to hear that noise.

It's going to be sort of a mad scramble...it's only three weeks from now. I'm super excited!
I seem to remember the option of the women's shirts, but opted for the men's. A consignment shop for t-shirts is a good idea. We've collected quite a few!

Thanks BS! I was told today that I'm the official winner. David Venable will be announcing it on his show on the QVC channel Sunday. My oh my! Smilie

I feel tremendously better about it now. Went through their "Certified Retailer" locator real quick right after I got the winner verification earlier (along with the newly added 2 more store requirement) and thought uh-oh, didn't see how I could come up with two additional dealers. It was a real let-down. Sorta bugged me all day, went back to it tonight and immediately realized the search could be expanded (DUH!), then went through them one by one and thankfully found the few gems.
I really don't want to be negative about what should be, and shall be, a really really nice win, but who in the heck changes the prize upon notification and then changes it again the next day?!?

wave Sorry Sprok just saw this! SD was acting up that day....but LMAO

Just got home from a long day of riding....decided to be sweet and accompany hubby on service call to McAllen, TX. That's about as far down to the end of Texas you can get. Long boring drive....but was hoping after the call we could skip on over to south padre, which I've never been to, and stay the night....darned if he didn't fix the problem within 15 minutes!!! Blew that plan, hard to explain an overnite stay with that time. On the way back had to go through customs! Kind of intimidating, mind you we were still in the US!!!! Had a drug dog, german shepherd, and this hispanic agent asks us if we are US citizens, I wanted to ask :"are you?". I think I have authority issues. Thankfully we were clean LMAO
Anyway got home to find a big starbucks package: 3 bags of coffee, $15 GC, French press and nice long coffee scoop. Score!!! I must have won the starbucks contest, dunno, it didn't say.
That is wonderful. Nice surprise. I cannot believe you had to go thru customs. Did they ask for proof of citizenship? What is a French press? Congrats on your win.

I still have one that will not work so I give up but most of them worked on Walmart and then they mail you walmart gift cards.

Many moons ago I was in the Navy stationed in Corpus Christi. Once drove a friend down to the Coast Guard station on South Padre -- I got stopped twice by border patrol on the way back. Had to get out of the car and open the trunk for them to inspect both times.

Oh, and each time the agent has both my military ID and driver's license in his hand asking me the same thing. Are you a US citizen?
