You threw away what?!

237 50 June 21, 2012 at 05:05 PM in Finance
I decided to put my log book on this forum so you can all see the crazy amount of free stuff in good condition that I find while walking my dogs at night in NYC. My girlfriend and I recently moved into a new apartment on the Upper East Side and we had been noticing how much brand new (or antique) stuff is left out on the curb.

So for fun (and because we are both as cheap as they come), we started grabbing stuff that is in good condition. Either we use it, try to sell it, or give it away.

Oh, and keep in mind, bottles and cans have a $0.05 deposit on them so we return those.

We just started keeping track, here is what we have so far:

6/18 - 18 books, 1 milk crate, 4 deposit cans ($0.20)
6/19 - Aero-Swiss Humidifier (Valued over $100), Keurig Coffee Machine ($120), Small Dust Buster, Best Fitness Leg Developer (Over $100), 11 deposit cans ($0.55)
6/20 - 7 deposit cans ($0.35)
6/21 - 37 bottle deposit cans (took the dogs on a long walk this afternoon) ($1.85)

That's the last four days, I'll update this as we get new finds.

Anyone else do this either out of necessity or as a hobby?

Stephen

You are doing well, especially with the deposit bottles, we do not have that here. And the Coke Reward caps as well.

So the dog walking is becoming profitable even if on a small level, every penny counts these days.

Thanks -- yeah that's the idea. We set up a piggy bank to put all of the profits in (esp from bottle deposits) and our plan is that if we come up with at least $2 a day, we'll have about $700 a year to spend on a vacation together. While $2 a day may seem like something to put your nose up at, $700/year pays my internet bill. It def adds up quickly.

Plus, it makes the chore of taking the dogs out at night more of an adventure/game. We bring a backpack, flashlights, gloves. People look at us pretty funny-- two young, well-dressed, white kids digging through garbage. It's pretty hilarious.

I wouldn't be keeping anything made of wood found in the trash. Especially stuff used for utensils.. Wood tends to hold disease/bacteria/etc even after washing.

That's solid advice. I was going to use it for office supplies in my closet (not for kitchen utensils). I'll reconsider after that thought though.

Today we went to Central Park to read and lay in the sun. Our adventure got us a few bottles, and the June issue of Backpacker Magazine (which my dad loves and I'll be sending it to him today).

Good idea, put the monies away toward a goal such as this and at some point you will reach that goal before you know it. You've turned it into an adventure and with a goal. You are being smart about it bulb

Like Landers said as well, watch what you are picking up though, some things just aren't able to be cleaned of "germs" - though there is the "donation factor" to take money off your taxes on "finds" - keep that in mind bulb Giving items away you find to a Thrift Store and asking for a receipt bulb Photograph the item, keep a spreadsheet, and value it based on IRS rules - and you should be just fine nod Just because you found it, doesn't mean you cannot "donate it" - if you don't want to keep it. Just clean it up the best that you can, and mark it "used" when you donate it. I know I'll get some flack for this comment.

Piccaboo is on fireee. We do a lot of thrifting as well (went to Goodwill today and bought some cupcake sheets and USB mouse for my media center for a dollar), so might as well donate some of the stuff we find that we can't use or sell. Brilliant ideas, keep 'em coming Smilie

Edit: Today's magazine find that I've already stamped and put in the mail for my dad

That magazine looks like it's in brand new condition laugh out loud

If you are ever looking for a Charger for a phone, always go to a Thrift Shop first to find one; the one's near me sell them for 25cents a piece. They have boxes in the front where people drop off their old phones, and if you can't find the charger you are looking for; they will look in that box to see if someone has put the charger in there with a phone that has been dropped off. I've gone a couple of times to find both a wall and/or car charger and found them for this price Big Grin Normally I find these at Hospital Thrift Stores at these prices; and they will have about 3 drawers full to go through.

Yes, I'm a Thrift Store Junkie Blush always looking for a bargain there either for myself or other people looking for specific items. Heck, for our boat, that's where I got a complete set of 18/10 flatware that was in perfect condition - yeah, I had to sort through the entire box to get the whole set - but was worth my time, 25cents a piece for all that I wanted from the set. Also picked up serving pieces for down at the boat as well. I didn't want to take anything from home that might get lost, fall in the water, or whatever; so the Thrift Store was the perfect place to go, bring it home and run it all through the Dishwasher bulb

I donate so much to this one Thrift Store, they know me by name when I walk in laugh out loud

Oh, this one place also let's us test anything electronic they have for sale prior to buying, and has a return policy - now how many Thrift Stores have return policies Faint

Nice on the ship flatware. We did the same thing for our apartment. Any sort of hardly used kitchen tools (like baking supplies) are never worth paying retail for. We get em at the Thrift store for a couple bucks. That's pretty crazy on both counts that you can test AND return. Never see that around here. It's an "All Sales are Final" culture. What state are you in?

We went on a long walk tonight with the pups, just got back and counted up:

35 bottles ($1.75)
4 My Coke Reward Caps
Today's Wall Street Journal on a park bench
1 Verizon Phone charger

We are going to be on vacation in NYC over the 4th...would love to know of some good thrift stores. We will be staying by Hell's Kitchen area. Is the Hell's Kitchen Flea Market worth going to on Saturdays?

Not sure about the Flea Market but in terms of Thrift Stores, check out the 30 posts on this blog (Days 1-30) will give you a good feel for what is around. The huge Salvation Army warehouse near Port Authority is totally worth checking out... it is like 3 floors and full of treasures. Let me know if you have any other questions.

I'm in Pennsylvania, in the 'burbs outside of Philly....

Another place to find newspapers, is in hospital waiting rooms laugh out loud
They put them in there for "free" for people going in waiting for people,
usually in the lobby areas, and the waiting room where people wait for
patients who are in surgery. Been to the hospitals too many times,
and I've always been able to pick up the daily newspaper for my FIL this way
while he is in there Smilie

Thanks! The Humidifier and the Vaccum cleaner work great. The former will come in handy in the winter when it gets really dry here. The Keurig seems to have some minor problems, I have to take it apart tomorrow and see what's up with it.
