You threw away what?!

237 50 June 21, 2012 at 05:05 PM in Finance
I decided to put my log book on this forum so you can all see the crazy amount of free stuff in good condition that I find while walking my dogs at night in NYC. My girlfriend and I recently moved into a new apartment on the Upper East Side and we had been noticing how much brand new (or antique) stuff is left out on the curb.

So for fun (and because we are both as cheap as they come), we started grabbing stuff that is in good condition. Either we use it, try to sell it, or give it away.

Oh, and keep in mind, bottles and cans have a $0.05 deposit on them so we return those.

We just started keeping track, here is what we have so far:

6/18 - 18 books, 1 milk crate, 4 deposit cans ($0.20)
6/19 - Aero-Swiss Humidifier (Valued over $100), Keurig Coffee Machine ($120), Small Dust Buster, Best Fitness Leg Developer (Over $100), 11 deposit cans ($0.55)
6/20 - 7 deposit cans ($0.35)
6/21 - 37 bottle deposit cans (took the dogs on a long walk this afternoon) ($1.85)

That's the last four days, I'll update this as we get new finds.

Anyone else do this either out of necessity or as a hobby?

Stephen

I love the look of that table as well. It reminds me of the treasure chest from pirates. Maybe it is worth something on the antique road show.

BAH! I hate my laptop sometimes. Accidentally deleted this entire post when I was almost done and

wasn't able to restore it for some reason. I will retype the actual 'story' part of the night's

adventure for the blog tomorrow, so you will be able to read it there if you want. It was a very

exciting night.

I went out solo -- no dogs and no Chelsea. I covered only four blocks between two avenues and

this is what I found...
  • HP1040 Fax Machine -- not sure if it works yet, but it looks like it is in pretty good shape. Will test it out tomorrow.
  • HP Floppy Drive & Smart Card Reader -- my twelve year old cousin told me a couple weeks ago that she didn't know what a floppy disk was. It made me feel old.
  • Dell Keyboard -- Plugged it in to my Media Center and it works. Needs a good cleaning.
  • BodyBlade Classic 4 -- This was a lucky find. I was looking around a large pile with my flashlight and saw a small piece of this sticking out. It looked like a weapon from my angle so I had to check it out. Looked it up on Ebay while I was out there, figured out that it is a popular and quickly selling piece of exercise equipment so I added it to my stack.
  • A Milk Crate -- this is my fifth one of these and I am loving their use as storage.
  • Bake King Cupcake Pan -- Chelsea will make good use of this.
  • A step stool -- we've been needing one of these for our closet
  • The United States Annotated Code Chapters 28 (Federal Rules of Evidence) and 42 (Public Health and Welfare), 2001 edition with the 2012 supplements. -- These are an excellent find. Every law firm I've ever been in has a copy and they sell quickly online.
  • A Trash Can -- going to use it for our recycling
  • Laundry Basket -- not sure If I'm going to keep this, but it was very useful for carrying everything else home.
  • 2 P&G brandSavers, 2 Redplums, and a Target P&G coupon set -- I've started getting into couponing, these will come in handy for sure.

I could have taken double the amount of stuff if I could have carried it. I really need to find one of those carts to wheel around.

Over and out.

UPDATE:
Decided to try to start moving inventory, and listed the BodyBuilder Classic 4 for $75 + 6.99 shipping (this is lowest available price -- next highest is 83.99 + 6.99 shipping). Hopefully that'll get sold nicec and quick.

I also ran a quick test of the fax machine. It turns on, takes paper from the feeder, the printing mechanism works, the scanner works, but the ink cart is dead. I ordered a new one (refurbished) for $2 on Amazon using a swagbucks gift card I had. Fingers crossed!

This just keeps getting better!!

Further research into the fax machine I found -- it was recalled by HP back in February of this year and I just submitted the info to get $100 rebate towards a new all in one! We were JUST about to buy a printer. Soooo excited

I forgot to post a project I did yesterday. Remember those dresser drawers I found last Monday? Well I put them to good use, and here's how.

Our kitchen is pretty tiny. Chelsea loves to cook and bake and we have accumulated a lot of gadgets for her to do that. Storing them is one thing -- they can go into the cabinets or closets -- the problem is that there isn't enough counter space to do the other aspects of the cooking while she uses them. When I originally took the drawers (there were 7 of them, I only used 2 for this project), I figured that I'd need to sand them down and repaint them because they were black and wouldn't look good on our walls... but then it dawned on me that they were the same color as the kitchen cabinets.

The space in front of the window, which you will see in the first picture, is pretty much dead space. You can't fit much there, and we need to be able to get that window open while she is cooking to air the place out. I nailed two boards together and made sure it was sturdy enough to hold the weight of multiple appliances. I then added in the supports along the wall... and voila! It works perfectly. Today I have to do the electrical set up, but that just entails getting a splitter and securing it to the back wall, sort of like installing an extra outlet.

The only thing I would have wanted to do differently if I could have was to cut the second board so the surface was the same all the way across. I don't have a saw in my toolkit here so I had to improvise.

Total Time Spent: 30 minutes
Total Project Cost: Less than $1 (for the nails)

Let me know what you think!

It was at some point. I opened it up and the radiator was not in there any more. That's why I made the decision to turn it into shelving Smilie

I was going to say that the shelf you added above would affect heat how well the space was heated. Since its empty pull the unit totally off and have another shelf underneath. Or simply use a book case with contact paper. That really is a tiny kitchen.

I would try to see about removing that radiator box and put a small shelving unit there. It would give her even more storage space.

Great minds obviously think alike. Thanks for your ideas. Yes it is VERY difficul to maneuver in there. She and I like to cook dinner together sometimes and it really isn't possible here. I put a better picture attached to the post to give you an idea of scale.

What I like about having limited space is that it is really getting me to think outside the box (teehee) on storage solutions. At no point do I want the place to look cluttered, so that means constantly redesigning how I have things arranged. Its fun.

I don't think the radiator box will come off without a fight. I have to take a closer look at that . If it will, gotta make sure I can reattach it if we decide to move out at any point... damn security deposit

Edit 1: Woo this thread has gone over 200 posts and 5300 views!! I was not expecting that at all when I started it

Edit 2: I didnt sleep last night and I'm a bit delirious. Forgot to add the picture. Sigh.

If its empty inside they wouldnt know if you simply screwed it back into the wall. If it doesnt have anything inside then why would they have an issue of you moving it out the way. Once you do that you can put your recycle and trash bins out the way and not taking up valuable floor space.

Did i say that was a tiny kitchen ?

I was going to tell you to run the keyboard through a dishwasher (Tape up the cord in a baggie), but then I saw that you probably don't have one in the NYC apartment. Good finds though! Keep up the good work.

So glad I don't live in NY. I mean all that trash piled up that high. And how small the apts. are. My master bath is bigger than that kitchen. But yeah, I would take that radiator cover off the wall and add a bookcase or something. At least all that trash piled up is getting you some things. Great haul lastnight.

My goodness that's a tiny kitchen. How does she cook in there? One thing that would help free up some counter top space would be to put a magnetic knife holder on the wall and put all the knives on it. Then you could put that knife block in storage, in case you get a larger kitchen some day.

I love this thread because Stephen (& Chelsea) are so upbeat & positive. Great finds!!!!

Did you ever get that Keurig fired up?

Yes, the kitchen is tiny but it is NYC and that is par for the course.
