You threw away what?!

237 50 June 21, 2012 at 05:05 PM in Finance
I decided to put my log book on this forum so you can all see the crazy amount of free stuff in good condition that I find while walking my dogs at night in NYC. My girlfriend and I recently moved into a new apartment on the Upper East Side and we had been noticing how much brand new (or antique) stuff is left out on the curb.

So for fun (and because we are both as cheap as they come), we started grabbing stuff that is in good condition. Either we use it, try to sell it, or give it away.

Oh, and keep in mind, bottles and cans have a $0.05 deposit on them so we return those.

We just started keeping track, here is what we have so far:

6/18 - 18 books, 1 milk crate, 4 deposit cans ($0.20)
6/19 - Aero-Swiss Humidifier (Valued over $100), Keurig Coffee Machine ($120), Small Dust Buster, Best Fitness Leg Developer (Over $100), 11 deposit cans ($0.55)
6/20 - 7 deposit cans ($0.35)
6/21 - 37 bottle deposit cans (took the dogs on a long walk this afternoon) ($1.85)

That's the last four days, I'll update this as we get new finds.

Anyone else do this either out of necessity or as a hobby?

Stephen

If its empty inside they wouldnt know if you simply screwed it back into the wall. If it doesnt have anything inside then why would they have an issue of you moving it out the way. Once you do that you can put your recycle and trash bins out the way and not taking up valuable floor space.

Did i say that was a tiny kitchen ?
The problem is that it isn't just screwed into the wall. It looks like it was plastered in and then caulked (gotta keep the roaches out some how). This chain of ideas though got me thinking more about redesigning the kitchen. I could actually extend the counter space to the right of the sink at the same height going across the window and then along the back wall above garbage cans. That creates about 6 feet of additional counter space. Build cubbies in the space between counter and window sill to store stuff in. The garbage cans would stay in the same spot, just with counter tops above them. Not a very hard job.

I was going to tell you to run the keyboard through a dishwasher (Tape up the cord in a baggie), but then I saw that you probably don't have one in the NYC apartment. Good finds though! Keep up the good work.
Just keep on rubbing it in...

So glad I don't live in NY. I mean all that trash piled up that high. And how small the apts. are. My master bath is bigger than that kitchen. But yeah, I would take that radiator cover off the wall and add a bookcase or something. At least all that trash piled up is getting you some things. Great haul lastnight.
Trust me, my bedroom suite area in high school was much bigger than this entire apartment put together. It's a bit of a shock but I love the challenge. You don't get cluttered when you have no space, it is too stressful. Especially since it is the 2 of us and 200 pounds of dog. I have to keep the floors clear in the entire apartment because I vacuum every day.

Quote from Zoe Moon :
My goodness that's a tiny kitchen. How does she cook in there? One thing that would help free up some counter top space would be to put a magnetic knife holder on the wall and put all the knives on it. Then you could put that knife block in storage, in case you get a larger kitchen some day.

http://www.amazon.com/b?ie=UTF8&node=13840861
Another excellent idea! I will def implement that one. That knife thing does take up way too much space.

Quote from Thrifteh :
I love this thread because Stephen (& Chelsea) are so upbeat & positive. Great finds!!!!

Did you ever get that Keurig fired up?

Yes, the kitchen is tiny but it is NYC and that is par for the course.
Thank you so much Smilie
You know, I have had that on the backburner on my project list for some reason. But now that you've brought it up, I will pick up some vinegar tonight and see what I can pull off.

And exactly -- most New Yorkers don't cook anyway. They don't need kitchen space.

Ask your landlord maybe he can discount your rent if you make some improvements.

Ha! Sorry. I had to have one put in when we bought our house - the wife made sure it was priority #1.

Further research into the fax machine I found -- it was recalled by HP back in February of this year and I just submitted the info to get $100 rebate towards a new all in one! We were JUST about to buy a printer. Soooo excited
Hey! That's the same fax machine I helped someone select and buy a few years ago! EEK! So I guess I should help them return and select another machine for the recall & rebate. I just checked out the pertinent info on the hp website. Not sure which model to select. Which one did you select and what kind of deal did you get? And thank you for not just providing entertainment with this thread, but even a public service announcement! Big Grin

Edited to add links to info on HP 1040/1050 recall, in case anybody else needs that info.

Haha no problem! I had no idea when I picked it up. I knew I had no use for a fax machine, but figured if I got it working could make a little money.

Yeah here is the list of the models you can get rebates for: http://faxrecall.hpordercenter.co.../uspl.aspx
I just got back from Best Buy and feel like a moron. I wrote down 5500 series on my notepad and stupidly forgot to double check my phone to make sure the 5520 was on the list which is the one I ended up buying as it was on sale for $109. I have to call up HP and find out if there is a way to make that work, or else I have to go all the way back to BB to return it and grab another. Its a hike in this weather.

Which one do you like?

Well, whatever replacement I get has to have a fax function, so I might not be shopping with the same criteria in mind as you. I looked up a few of the qualifying models on Amazon just to see what the prices and reviews were like, but I need to doublecheck again which of those have fax capabilities.

Edited to add: Oh, btw, I know you said the fax machine you found came with an empty ink cartridge. But don't forget you can recycle that ink cartridge at Staples for $2 in Staples Rewards... and then you can add that $2 to your log of dumpster diving monies! Big Grin

So I just got off the phone first with the Recall Center, who said it probably will be okay for me to keep the 5520, but I needed the okay from their Corporate Office. I was transferred over there and she said it has to be ok'ed by some other department but she submitted the request. Because of the holiday, I won't hear from them until probably Thursday or Friday. I'm debating whether or not it is worth it to go back to Best Buy to do a return before I open the box...and to go get one of the other models... or if I should just start using the damn thing and hope for the best. Quite the dilemma.

Great minds think alike!! Staples and Best Buy are in the same building up by me, so I brought the cart over for the $2 . They had a deal on printer paper Staples Multipurpose 500 sheets (reg 5.99) that it is $3 after MIR. So you better believe I got a couple of those!

I saw a nice wooden roller chair and a Vornado fan on 94th and Columbus today. Vornado probably has a siezed motor or something but it's always fun to take things apart. Too bad I didn't drive to the city.

Nice, I too curse the fact my car isn't here regularly.

We live in a decent sized one bedroom in a good neighborhood. We pay 2125/month and that includes our electricity, heat, water and sewer.

That's not bad for New York considering your utilities are included. I expected worse, guess all of us non New Yorkers think it's crazy expensive there.

Trust me, for Manhattan this is pretty much as good as it gets. I know people who live in studio apartments in more trendy neighborhoods that pay double what I do for half the size and utils are not included.

Keep in mind, we are in a 6 floor walkup as well.

Depends on the neighborhood but I'd say a general rule is it's cheaper as you go up from 96th street and insane below. A friend lives on 151th street and broadway and pays $700/month + utilities for one room with 2 other roommates.

If you don't mind me asking, what neighborhood do you live in?

That's good exercise!

Yes you are right for sure. We didn't want to go above the 90s because Chelsea works at night and I wanted her to feel safe walking home from the subway alone at 10 or 11pm. That was one of my main factors into our decision. We live in the high 70s, east of 1st ave. That's as specific as I'll get Smilie
