You threw away what?!

237 50 June 21, 2012 at 05:05 PM in Finance
I decided to put my log book on this forum so you can all see the crazy amount of free stuff in good condition that I find while walking my dogs at night in NYC. My girlfriend and I recently moved into a new apartment on the Upper East Side and we had been noticing how much brand new (or antique) stuff is left out on the curb.

So for fun (and because we are both as cheap as they come), we started grabbing stuff that is in good condition. Either we use it, try to sell it, or give it away.

Oh, and keep in mind, bottles and cans have a $0.05 deposit on them so we return those.

We just started keeping track, here is what we have so far:

6/18 - 18 books, 1 milk crate, 4 deposit cans ($0.20)
6/19 - Aero-Swiss Humidifier (Valued over $100), Keurig Coffee Machine ($120), Small Dust Buster, Best Fitness Leg Developer (Over $100), 11 deposit cans ($0.55)
6/20 - 7 deposit cans ($0.35)
6/21 - 37 bottle deposit cans (took the dogs on a long walk this afternoon) ($1.85)

That's the last four days, I'll update this as we get new finds.

Anyone else do this either out of necessity or as a hobby?

Stephen

No posts or blogs since the twelfth. Maybe one of the buyers who got the wrong tennis racket tracked down the OP and Bonk him with it.

I hope everything is OK since you haven't posted in awhile.

I'm curious how you clean/sanitize/de-germ items? I guess the dishwasher for utensils/glassware/plastic. How about larger items? Say furniture? A desk? I'm kinda sorta a clean freak. laugh out loud

Also, do you notice if there are better finds in higher income areas vs lower income areas?

I did hear some yelling or what seemed like yelling from a dumpster down by Time Square but the thing was padlocked.

Hi all!

Sorry for my absense! I had to fly down to Miami for a few days to clean out my old storage unit and then we got in a car accident and had our flight canceled coming back. It's been a hell of a week. Besides moving some more inventory, we haven't found too much to write about lately, it seems like a lot of people are out of town for vacation these last few weeks. Some of our recent finds:

A picture
Some tools
Old Consumer Reports (read these on the airplane)
2 Stands, been using these as laptop docks
Another milk crate
And 150 more My Coke Reward Points

I'll be around more again, my apologies!!

laugh out loud Glad you are OK.

I just can't see how people are happy with living with all that crap piled up in front of their homes/businesses all the time. I would hate it.

Thanks! I've unfortunately been really busy. Reactivated myself from Medical Leave to finish my Bachelor's degree, so I have been working on finishing some incomplete courses. Only six classes left to get the damn degree.

We found this HP OfficeJet printer today. It is an older model but luckily has a USB port on it so I should be able to get it working. Unfortunately the power adapter wasn't with it and my cable stash didn't turn up anything I could use. I may have to buy one, unless I can find one to borrow from someone to see if it works first. The printer had a pretty nasty jam when I opened it up (which I cleared in all of 15 seconds), but I have a feeling that is the reason the previous owner threw it out. The ink carts and print heads are all full.

At the very least, if it doesn't work, I can pull out the 4 ink carts and 4 print heads and turn em in at Staples for $16 haha.

The trash haulers union is striking here so our trash wasn't picked up yesterday. Trying to look on this as a plus for dumpster diving but not sure about that.

My dad is a master electrician for a very wealthy city in FL and his office is located on the grounds of a transfer station. Anyone know what a transfer station is? It's where rich people go to get rid of their "junk". It's all sorted, and no household trash is allowed.

Needless to say, my dad gets all kinds of stuff.

Awesome, right? Nooooooo!!!!!! My parents are hoarders. laugh out loud
