You threw away what?!

237 50 June 21, 2012 at 05:05 PM in Finance
I decided to put my log book on this forum so you can all see the crazy amount of free stuff in good condition that I find while walking my dogs at night in NYC. My girlfriend and I recently moved into a new apartment on the Upper East Side and we had been noticing how much brand new (or antique) stuff is left out on the curb.

So for fun (and because we are both as cheap as they come), we started grabbing stuff that is in good condition. Either we use it, try to sell it, or give it away.

Oh, and keep in mind, bottles and cans have a $0.05 deposit on them so we return those.

We just started keeping track, here is what we have so far:

6/18 - 18 books, 1 milk crate, 4 deposit cans ($0.20)
6/19 - Aero-Swiss Humidifier (Valued over $100), Keurig Coffee Machine ($120), Small Dust Buster, Best Fitness Leg Developer (Over $100), 11 deposit cans ($0.55)
6/20 - 7 deposit cans ($0.35)
6/21 - 37 bottle deposit cans (took the dogs on a long walk this afternoon) ($1.85)

That's the last four days, I'll update this as we get new finds.

Anyone else do this either out of necessity or as a hobby?

Stephen

Found ANOTHER printer this morning on our walk... HP PSC 1350xi
Unfortunately, it didn't have the power cable with it and it isn't standard... the resale value is about $35 and it would cost me about $15 for a replacement cable so I decided against keeping it. I ended up taking it apart to recycle it, separating the plastics from metals and the chips will go to electronic recycling. It did have two cartridges, so thats another $4 @ Staples.

EDIT: Finally Updated the Blog!

Hmm, 70% cut sounds appealing. How about 80%? Plus, we have a King size bed that we share between Chelsea, Biggie, Frankie, Cali and I. You can join.

Baha fat chance Scamps. You're fired!

Btw, UncleJace, you gave me some good printer karma or something because after you found one, I found the HP Fax that got me a brand new printer, and two more HP Printers.

Thats awesome! I haven't found anything of any real value since finding the printer. I will keep looking though.

That's too bad -- I have high hopes for tonight. It is the end of the month (leases end) AND bulk trash day. Chelsea has work tonight, so I will be out there alone scouring for another treasure. I'm still flying high off the Arline Sherman print. Looks like it is worth about $150, and I already hung it on our wall.

Some finds from a short stroll this evening...
  • 3 Books on Woodworking (Great gifts for my recently retired dad)
  • 3 Printer Carts -- $6 @ Staples
  • 10Base-T Concentrator -- Not sure what I'm going to do with this, but I love old networking gear
  • A bunch of cedar shoe-horns -- Use these for all of my dress shoes
  • S-Video Cable (not pictured)

Oh and btw, two of the printer carts came from ANOTHER HP Printer I found today. It was pretty beat up so I didn't bother bringing it home, but did scrap the carts out of it. That makes number three for the last two weeks. (worshipUncleJaceworship)

I can't believe someone threw this away. It's not even perforated yet.

When I was in college I had a modem die on me. Since it was out of warranty, I took the mounting bracket off and stuck it on my wall. It became a small piece of wallpaper. During my summer internship the company was getting rid of a bunch of old stuff, so I was able to snag a few dead boards. I had quite a collection but have since gotten rid of it. Old circuit boards can be made into really cool stuff. laugh out loud
