I think I want a Vegas wedding someday. I'm really not much of a planning person, so I think the stress of planning a big wedding would really freak me out. I always sort of thought that maybe if I decided that I missed out on a big wedding, I could throw a really big first anniversary party. I've heard of people doing that. Perhaps that would be the best of both world. Who knows what will happen. Right now, I just want to get through my Ph.D.

Oh, and I also HATE showers. I hate the stupid games, little prizes, and gossip. I hope I do not have to have a shower...
True story: One morning I'm in lab and I get an email from my labmate (also a PhD student) with a picture of her in a white dress with her boyfriend. Subject was, "guess what I did this weekend?!" . I nearly fell out of my chair laugh out loud It was perfect for her. Lots of ways to go about it and totally avoided showers although they had a small party later. nod

what did you do instead? i don't mind the games tho, probably because i've never actually played them before. in fact, i've only ever been to 1 shower and it was the one that i organized.
. . . .
B-shower game, it's different & u never know what people would say: guess the white stuff (tongue in cheek, of course) - lay out white powders (baking soda, powder detergent, flour, salt, sugar), white gels (dish detergent, toothpaste, cortisone cream, scrape out Oreo filling) and see what people come up with. You could also do an activity instead of a game. We hired a lady from Michael's to come in and do a cupcake decorating lesson- it's nothing too serious and you get to eat Big Grin I also liked the anonymous advice for the bride- sometimes it's heart and others are :funny:

I am not a fan of attending showers either. I loathe the games. At my friend's bridal shower, her mother insisted on games. I did three, Guess That Cake, All About the Bride, and All About the Couple. I did not like the Big Ideas cousin trying to tell the bride the answers. It is the bride's life...she knows the answers!

I definitely do not want a bachlorette party because that equals stripper in my circle. No thank you. And I would prefer to throw my own bridal shower because no one is going to do it the way I would. I would throw my own baby shower also. I cannot trust these people to do a good job.

To be polite they invited ppl they knew weren't interested/couldn't make it, then wanted replacements for the ones they were really inviting. She didn't like it when DH and I said, "nope, that's it, your 'No' becomes a spot for more of our friends". DH & I spent a lot of time handmaking them - she should have sent photocopies to the "fake invites" Bleh

Why is the hotel $600 instead of $300???
$300/night x 2 nights. If I weren't in the wedding, I could have stayed with my in-laws (tho they were trying to put me w/ a toddler, if you remember)

holy, that's a huge tab. you really should have just said no. laugh out loud and you should have consulted me before ordering your dress! i got 3 for 400. b2g1 free! Ermm i'm surprised you didn't get your dress yet actually, considering i already got mine and i think i ordered after you.
. . .
Dress came a while ago, bride didn't want to mail it. I'm supposed to pick it up from her sometime this week, but she's not answering me Annoyed About the price... I KNOW. I tried so hard to get her to order from an online vendor- would have saved us $75 each, but she wouldn't do it Sadwalk
It sounds like you're doing a good job of navigating your future in-law situation Smilie

i really despise flowers in non-flower colors. i think grey flowers are extremely ugly (and they look like death vomit). i also do not like green or blue flowers, even though i love those colors. i guess i'm weird and conservative in that sense. it's okay - grey will just be less pronounced - i was having inner conflicts anyway, because the inside of the mansion we're using is dark wood (as in, even the walls are wood) which clashes with charcoal imo. Dontknow it's really not a big deal. Smilie

i feel bad for friends having to pay to be in my wedding. i know they don't mind it, but i still feel bad about it. i'm lucky that the friends that are in our wedding are all not struggling for money, but one friend didn't make it to my bachelorette and i think it was mostly a money issue. i felt bad about that - i have a lot of friends that aren't local and they will be travelling just to be here for the wedding. it's sad that they won't be able to attend the other events. i even opted for a cheaper bachelorette by doing it in vegas - the flight isn't bad coming from LA, and clubbing was free. we didn't eat at pricey restaurants, and brought our own alcohol, so i hope it wasn't *too* much for friends to pay. i bought the girls' dresses and will be paying for hair/makeup because i would have felt bad if they had to pay for that AND the bachelorette and shower, considering how much people spend on these things. i know a friend who was in a wedding (very fancy one) where the bachelorette was in ny. they ended up spending 1k each on it. Faint
The only wedding I was in, this was a huge issue. The bride decided on an out-of-town bachelorette party, but nothing elaborate or expensive. The maid of honor insisted on no moochers, even though I was willing to make up the difference for those who couldn't afford it. She is a very nice girl and all, but it kind of ticked me off because even though I make a respectable hourly wage, she makes in a week about what I make in about a month. A lot of girls close to the bride were unemployed and/or had serious health conditions and I thought it was not fair to exclude them when between the two of use we could have all the up-front costs covered easily. Everyone who ended up coming could pay, but I really hope I'll never have to deal with that again, way too stressful.

I do remember that. You are a team player. We would have been at the cheaper hotel. All the BMs slept at the bride's home the night before the wedding except me. One, I wanted to sleep on my own bed. Two, I had to get up early to get my hair done by my own stylist.

Paying how? I will tell you how to be "paid in full"!!!!

Hehe! That's a nice way to go about doing it. I don't think I will have any handmade invites. Maybe a select few, but I may go the way of Facebook invites as I've seen being done by my generation. Saves $$ for something people will 90% throw out anyway!

Oh yes, the back is supposed to be low. I am happy that I am not hanging out of it. I am not sure about wearing it on vaca. Maybe if you had a villa, but not a regular hotel room. Maybe on a nice quiet walk on the beach. I would not wear it as a beach coverup because it is too long. I also was not sleep in it because it is too restrictive. On the fence about keeping it.

I would like a small wedding. I think my friends would outnumber my family. If I need someone, there are two family members who would be there for me without question. I have a lot more friends who are the same way.
Agreed to the villa statement! That's only about where I'd imagine it being worn. Maybe try it on a few more times to see if you still really like it bounce

I am still deciding if I should get that bra I saw in stores...I've never seen anything like it! I took a picture and am drooling over it. Gonna sleep on it.

You know, I like those ideas. laugh out loud I think my ideal shower would be having a nice lunch at a nice restaurant maybe over looking the beach, some gift openings and that's it! Maybe afternoon tea. No games, none of that. This will probably save more money and time and headache Big Grin

you and the beach! laugh out loud

i don't mind games - i think the games are fun, but it depends on the games and more importantly, the crowd. games help when you don't really know each other, but if all the attendees are acquaintances then you probably don't need them. it helped me a lot when i was organizing - i didn't mind coming up with games (there are a lot of online resources) or coming up with prizes/favors (i just went through my stash laugh out loud). it didn't change the cost any and i think it made it more fun for everyone because we were all doing the same activity, as opposed to groups of people talking amongst themselves the whole time. depends on the crowd tho.

i'm asking my friend to host at her house, because it's a nice house and next to a lake (so it's pretty), and also it's cheaper that way. it wasn't that expensive when i hosted her shower bc it was only 8-10 ppl, so it was like under $200 total and i split it with a bridesmaid (her sister). i'm hoping it costs her less than that. i should remind her that she can ask the other bm's to help pay for it and help organize. it's going to be in the afternoon so we won't be paying for a meal for everyone, at least.

oh and my invites cost me like, $50 or so total. (add stamps and it becomes more like 100, but still not that much!) you definitely do not need to spend a lot on them! i think it's nice to get mail, so i was opposed to doing an evite. ours were very simple tho. but a lot of people said they were very me, or very cute, or both.

Was it one of your birthday wishes to attend the Gilroy Garlic Festival?! That's one of my life goals and I will accomplish it hopefully next year!

Love the beach! Surf I think the games depends on what kind of games and if people are willing to play. Games are no fun if people don't like to play, and yep, depends on what crowd for sure!

That's the best with having our stash - easy to go through for gifts!

Yours sound like it would be nice and fun! House overlooking the lake? That's some view! And saves money! I'd imagine these things to be rather small, I can't imagine that with a larger crowd, especially for me, because with crowds, things get hard and people may not mesh.

I remember your invites from Visa Print! I'm still considering that idea as well, but I guess with DBF's people out in the midwest and in Seattle, it's harder to get addresses, or er, depends on laziness laugh out loud It IS nice to get invites. I guess I will just have to see what happens. I think I wanna go with registering online or confirmation online. Cause I want to have a mass list somewhere easy to reference and I'd probably have a list of rules. I've seen pictures of weddings where attendees were wearing WHITE dresses!!!! That is a HUGE NO! So crap like that I wanna make clear Big Grin Probably have a bouncer at the door checking attire laugh out loud shake head I also saw someone with a t-shirt dress. A dress that's just like a long maxi tee. Too casual. I really feel like attendees are becoming lax in what they're wearing...
