One of my dearest friends got engaged a month or so ago and she's shopping for wedding dresses online. She's been asking me for thoughts, but since I have no experience, I wanna turn to you gals and ask some basic questions.

She's thinking about getting something from somewhere in Europe that includes tailoring in the cost of the dress for approx $200 total.

I told her it's best to try a dress on before deciding for look/fit/feel purposes. AND in case measurements aren't consistent or what nerdicus went through OMG
I just think fees for return, unable to return and have to resell, and not knowing the material and how it looks on her.

She's looking at this site http://www.ericdress.com/. Anyone have experiences with shopping for a dress online....?

I'm kinda against for the listed reasons (partially). But she's cheap and I can see her only wanting to spend $200 on a dress.
Scratchhead Well... I ordered my BM dresses online- but they were name-brand and I could see/feel the samples in-store. I looked at the site- they have feedback, so if the comments are real, then that's a nice feature. I'd want to read some negative ones before thinking they were legit though. It looks like lead time is pretty short- a month ? So, as long as she ordered it with enough time to fix it if it were a complete disaster (think- mismatched whites w/ a multi textured dress, so enough time to order one through the usual routes - 4 months for a rush order?), then maybe it's OK? Dontknow To be safe-er, I'd probably get a dress with a lace-up corset, as long as it's ordered in the right size (check, double, check, professionally get measurements checked), it should fit like a glove.

Azn - I would advise your friend to go to a store and try on dresses similar in style to the one she wants to buy. Has she tried on anything yet? it's a fun process, and it really helps figure out what looks good on your figure and what doesn't. She should at least do that. I personally wouldn't order without feeling the fabric and seeing it in person.

There was 1 company I saw that can custom make the dress for you, has decent fabric and designs, and is in that price range. They also have a showroom in la where you can try everything on. If you want I'll pm you the info. or post it here later.

Thanks! Yes, please do PM me the info. I'm sure she'll be interested in it. She's really into lace and detail and intricate things as such, especially lace, so in my mind, that automatically raises the price points on dresses, but I don't know, just assuming.

So no, she hasn't tried anything on yet, I've encouraged her to and I really hope she does. I think this custom shop would probably catch her eye especially if it's around her price point!

Thanks for all your insight. I've informed her of what to consider nod

I think it's a little different with brand name dresses. I couldn't even get the site to load properly shake head I didn't get to read or much less see reviews.

Yeah - I was surprised about the lead time. Could be they don't have too many orders and/or lots of seamstresses?

I'm worried about fit for her because she's super super skinny and pretty much stick shaped with a booty and so without trying it on, it's hard to see what it would look like. And I can't imagine having it fit right without having the usual proportions or average proportions.

I would never buy one online unless I found it and was able to try it instore.
Or able to easily return it.
nod I agree completely! I would freak out if I was buying a wedding dress online without trying it on/seeing it in person.

We went to a thrift store in Destin. There was a new in shrink-wrapped box wedding dress... size 0 for 5'1". $50. I'm not sure if they'd allow opening it. I almost bought it just to see what it looked like laugh out loud

Also that day, I came to the conclusion that I can't do thrift stores. One of my sisters loves it. The moment I opened the door, I knew I can't.

this is the site: simply bridal [simplybridal.com]

it's made in china (then again, what isn't nowadays? possibly just the 10k+ dresses...) but the designer used to work at some fancy boutiques or designers. i forgot what the deal was. you have to book a visit to the showroom, or at least that's how it was when i went - i needed to print out a ticket and everything. but the showroom was pretty cool. unfortunately their samples will be too large for your friend (they were too large for me and looked funny bc they didn't clip me correctly). i can send you a photo of me in a lace dress from there i was considering - it was one of their most expensive dresses at like 400.

Yuck! They do! vomit I've only been in a Thirft Store once, and walked right out. Not worth it.

Thanks! I'll forward this info along to her. Yeah, I'd like to see the photo of the lace wedding dress. $400 isn't bad at all.

I vote suede. Love that texture, plus I feel like scuffs on suede are not as noticeable as on patent.
Thanks for the vote. Smilie

Quote from azn1x6flame :
I vote suede. Is this for your flapper dress? I think Suede looks nice in general and brings attention to the shoes with the texture!

Really! That's awesome to know! I don't have very many pairs of patent pumps, but this is awesome!
I ordered the black & white Mary Jane heels to wear with the flapper dress. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/...01_s00_i00 I just got them, & they move up & down on my heel. Is this what I need to correct that? http://www.amazon.com/Heavenly-He...ccessories I ordered a 5. They run big. Sadwalk

Thanks for the shoe vote. I need new black & brown pumps & couldn't decide which to order. It's time to donate my older ones & try something new. The black pumps I have are suede, so I probably should just wear those. I'd like to have a little higher heel though.

Quote from nerdgirl :
Gh- I like suede also. I find it to be more comfortable.
Thanks for the vote. Suede it is.

Quote from nerdgirl :
yes, thread loop, that's what i meant when i said fabric. (still out of it from travelling - just got home phew!) i broke that loop on 1 dress... don't ask me why i was trying on a bm dress for my own wedding. :lol : : blush: i need to fix it actually. did you just get a metal loop put on instead? i might just sew one on myself.
One of my Express dresses has the useless thread loop. I'm going to sew a metal loop on it myself. It should be easy.

Quote from red333 :
I got the new express fall catalog. There's a short sequin dress in there that I really like for $79.90. Kurt than that, I'm no really crazy about anything (yet). The pictures are taken in Chicago. I really like them and the way they incorporate the crowd in the bean. It's worth taking a second look. It also make me really homesick : (
I didn't get the catalog. I hope they send me one. Sorry you're missing home. hug It will get better as time passes. Comfort

Quote from ALVSGIRLY :
I wear a size 4 : (.
That's even worse. I would hate to have to pay as much as you do for shoes. I'd be walking around barefoot all the time. laugh out loud
