When rounding to two decimal places...

117 14 July 22, 2012 at 06:51 PM in Question
What would you round 5.3345 to?

I say 5.33 but someone else says 5.34. The complete answer to the problem changes a good amount for the different values. Anyone know the exact rules to rounding in this situation?

Final answer 5.34
yea, that's wrong.

Quote from Aluvus :
In conventional rounding, 0-4 round down while 5-9 round up. The are several other approaches with various advantages. Here's more than you could ever conceivably want to know about rounding: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rounding
Without reading Wiki for Rounding info...of which Chews has written half of it...

When I was rounding with a 5 I was always taught you look to the number after it, if it is >=6, you round up, <=4 you round down.

Also, I would hardly call it "rounding" when you have 0...that is just losing a decimal place of significance/precision if you will..

1.0 doesn't "round" to 1, because it IS 1.
5.54 would round to 5; 5.56 would round to 6. Basically just due to even distribution. (4 numbers go down, 4 go up and 1 can do either)

If you're looking at rounding to the 100th's place you only look at the 1000th's place...you don't stack the rounding out to the 10000th's place. It should be 5.33.

Pretty sure that's wrong too because at 5.54 or 5.56 you're already over half way to 6 so if you're rounding to the 1's place you only need look at 5.5 the 100th's place doesn't affect it and it would always be 6.

That doesn't seem correct to me.

I can see where 5.54 would round down to 5.5 and 5.56 would round up to 5.6, but if rounding to a whole number it seems like 5.54 would round up to 6 since the .54 is greater than .5. But that is back way too far in my memory to know how it is supposed to be done.

What would you round 5.55 to?

Determine what your rounding digit is and look to the right side of it. If that digit is 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9 add one to the rounding digit and drop all digits to the right of it.

For all ages.

5.33

Can someone tell me why 5.335 rounds to 5.33 using the example where the rounding digit goes up if the one next to it is 5 or greater?

Answered that already but the number is 5.3345 to start, not 5.335.

Nono

The answer may always be 42, but then you have to round it so the correct final answer is 6.
